Eugene O'Neill
Biographical Notes Nobel Prize Winner for Literature 1936 Born October 6th, 1888, in New York City. Son of James O'Neill, the popular romantic actor. First seven years of my life spent mostly in hotels and railroad trains, my mother accompanying my father on his tours of the United States, although she never was an actress, disliked the theatre, and held aloof from its people. Writings of Eugene O'Neill From the age of seven to thirteen attended Catholic schools. Then four years at a non-sectarian preparatory school, followed by one year (1906-1907) at Princeton University. After expulsion from Princeton I led a restless, wandering life for several years, working at various occupations. Was secretary of a small mail order house in New York for a while, then went on a gold prospecting expedition in the wilds of Spanish Honduras. Found no gold but contracted malarial fever. Returned to the United States and worked for a time as assistant manager of a theatrical company on tour. After this, a period in which I went to sea, and also worked in Buenos Aires for the Westinghouse Electrical Co., Swift Packing Co., and Singer Sewing Machine Co. Never held a job long. Was either fired quickly or left quickly. Finished my experience as a sailor as able-bodied seaman on the American Line of transatlantic liners. After this, was an actor in vaudeville for a short time, and reporter on a small town newspaper. At the end of 1912 my health broke down and I spent six months in a tuberculosis sanatorium.

Eugene O'Neill
Born:  New York City; October 16, 1888
Died:  Boston, Massachusetts; November 27, 1953 Entry by Herbert F. Janick O'Neill's search for a spiritual home, symbolized by his many residences, is reflected in his life and writings. Until 1912 he was rebellious and self-destructive. An irresponsible wanderlust, drunkenness, divorce, and finally, physical breakdown with tuberculosis, characterized his troubled, aimless existence. His rebirth after a six-months stay in a Wallingford, Connecticut, sanitarium was dramatic. The production of his first play by the Provincetown Players in 1916 began a period of intense creative activity, culminating in 1936 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Starting in 1920, when his first full-length play was produced on Broadway, O'Neill wrote and produced nearly two dozen dramas including The Emperor Jones Mourning Becomes Electra (1931) and Ah Wilderness (1933), his only comedy, set in the New London summer home. Then, for almost a decade until the mid-1940s, O'Neill wrote few plays, raising the suspicions that his talent had peaked and that his voice had been only one of the "Lost Generation of the 1920's." Yet, in his final years he produced his best work—four psychologically penetrating, heavily autobiographical plays, including

My influences included Freidrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg. Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill was born in a Broadway hotel room in New York City on October 16, 1888. O'Neill's father, James O'Neill, was one of Nineteenth Century America's most popular actors. As a youngster Eugene spent much of his time on national tours with his father. In 1906 he entered Princeton but was soon expelled. He married in 1909 but divorced within three years, however he did have a son during the time he was married. By 1912, O'Neill had held a multitude of odd jobs, including one as a gold prospector in Honduras and another as a seaman. He had also become a regular at New York City's flophouses and dingy saloons. That same year he became ill with tuberculosis and was inspired to become a playwright while reading during his recovery.
