Fitz-James O'Brien lived only 33 years from 1828 till 1862 but in his brief life he left a mark that endures today. O'Brien endures because he was a remarkable writer. Remarkable indeed! He had a way of blending of hard fact with almost-fanciful fantasy, juxtaposing technology and mysticism, creating convincing and "scientific" settings that play against the otherworldly romance. For all the weird fancifulness these days O'Brien is read mostly as a successor to Edgar Allan Poe his work has qualities we now associate with science fiction:

"The Origin and History of the MacNamaras" A Brief Outline of O'Brien History From the tenth century, when the sept rose to the High Kingship of Ireland in the person of Brian Boru, down to the present day, the O'Briens have always been prominent in the history of the country. Before Brian Boru's time, the Dalcassian clan, known as the Ui Toirdealbhaigh, to which they belonged, was not of outstanding importance in Thomond: the greatness of Brian gave them pre-eminence there and in due course the sept, which took the surname O'Brien from him, divided into several branches and possessed a great part of Munster, of which they were frequently kings. The O'Briens of Ara (north Tipperary), a territory they acquired from the O'Donegans about the year 1300 had as chief Mac Ui Bhriain Ara; those of Co. Limerick gave their name to the barony of Pubbelebrien; another branch was located around Aherlow by the Galtees; and another south of the Comeragh Mountains on the rich lands near Dungarvan. In all those areas, and especially in Co. Clare they are numerous to-day: the name, in fact, is so common that it comes sixth in the statistical list relating to Irish surnames, with an estimated population of more than thirty thousand persons. In this connexion it may be observed, that though fifty years ago one third of the people of the name was registered as plain Brien, nowadays it is rarely to be found without the prefix O.

Poems and quotes for the microscopist?
A browse through many of the older books show not only a desire to inform people of microscopy and microscopic life, but the authors also try to pass on their own sense of wonder of life on the miniature scale. Many of these books had thought provoking poems or quotes in the frontispiece, so here are a few ..... While we're on a literary theme also included is a link to a delightful supernatural story written in the nineteenth century where microscopy is the key element. If you have a favourite quote, poem or stories with a strong microscopical theme, why not let us know , we'll be delighted to mention them in a future article. 'In commendation of ye microscope' Henry Powers 1664 (in the original old English) 'Of all the Inventions none there is Surpasses
the Noble Florentine's Dioptrick Glasses
For what a better, fitter guift Could bee
in this World's Aged Luciosity.
To help our Blindnesse so as to devize
By whose augmenting power wee now see more
than all the world Has ever dounn before'
Possibly by the astronomer Sir J F W Herschel, who also said 'To the Natural Philosopher there is no natural object that is unimportant or trifling; from the least of Nature's works he may learn the greatest lessons.'

Historie SF Kluby II.
