Adaptation of Frank Norris novel McTeague sets out to tell all the truth about a The California writer (18701902) had, with Stephen Crane and Theodor
http://yorty.sonoma.edu/filmfrog/reviews/g/greed.html
GREED w/Gibson Gowland, ZaSu Pitts, Jean Hersholt, Chester Conklin, Dale Fuller, Sylvia Ashton, Hughie Mack, Cesare Gravina (role removed in editing) This controversial film is more than a masterpiece. Adaptation of Frank Norris' novel McTeague sets out to tell all the truth about a man's lust for wealth. Director von Stroheim's original version ran for nine hours, and the studio cut it to less than two! (This version contains some restored footage.) What remains is the finest piece of mad realism ever perpetrated. Von Stroheim took his actors to Death Valley so that they could really sweat out those climactic passions, and it shows. Pitts, who was so well-known for her comedy roles that contemporary audiences laughed practically every time she came on screen in the film, does fine work in a tragic role. Be forewarned: the following material contains specific story information you may not want to know before viewing the film: From Georges Sadoul's Dictionary of Films : "Former miner McTeague (Gowland) sets up as a dentist in San Francisco and marries Trina (Pitts), the daughter of German immigrants (Conklin, Ashton). After winning a lot of money, Trina becomes greedy, and McTeague, having lost his livelihood because of his rival, Marcus (Hersholt), becomes a drunken tramp and ends up killing his wife. He encounters Marcus again in Death Valley and kills him but remains bound to the corpse by handcuffs. "Before making Greed , Stroheim wrote: 'It is possible to tell a great story in motion pictures in such a way that the spectator ... will come to believe that what he is looking at is real ... even as Dickens and De Maupassant and Zola and Frank Norris catch and reflect life in their novels. It is with that idea that I am producing Frank Norris' story

"Charles G. Norris, brother of Frank Norris, author of novels dealing with such problems as modern education, women in business, hereditary and environmental influences, big business, ethics and birth control."
"Kathleen [Thompson] Norris, (1880-1966), his wife," was a popular novelist. " Family Gathering (1959) is an informal autobiography." from Ann Douglas, Terrible Honesty: Mongrel Manhattan in the 1920s (New York: Noonday Press/Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 1995), 533: "Kathleen Norris was the most interesting novelist of feminine and matriarchal sentimentalist essentialism in the 1910s and 1920s; vastly popular, with a curious literary style that seems to owe a good deal to Henry James, she developed the themes that would dominate the soaps of early radio, aroused the ire (and perhaps envy) of Dorothy Parker, was adored by Alexander Wollcott (always a fan of the matriarch), and took acre of Elinor Wylie’s stepchildren (they were related by marriage; forgotten today, she is well worth in-depth study. Of particular interest are her novels

Classroom Issues and Strategies
As in Stephen Crane's overtly avant-garde works, Frank Norris's writings frequently seek to unsettle or disorient the "average" reader. The Norris canon includes some of the most conventional turn-of-the-century short stories possible in the realm of genteel fiction. More experimental fictions such as " ," however, are conceived in radically different ways. " Fantaisie " is, from one point of view, clearly designed as a droll tale for a sophisticated, "elite" readership seeing itself as having risen above the ethos of petit bourgeois morality and jaded to Dickensian melodrama eliciting sympathy for the "lower classes." The Olympian perspective on the antics of the vulgar characters represented here (and in the first half of McTeague , 1899) is adopted and maintained by the patrician Norrishis sense of humor resembling that of Stephen Crane, especially in the conclusion of Maggie where Mrs. Johnson's lugubrious response to her daughter's death is rendered tongue-in-cheek.

by Frank Norris
Haec fabula docet and all the rest. One day, when she was about twenty-one or twenty-two, she heard Stayne's name for the first time. Someone was telling someone else a story in which Stayne had shone with particular brilliancy, had done a thing especially generous, had sacrificed himself and concealed the fact. A little after Miss Hromada heard his name again, and heard it coupled with extravagant praise. Next she saw a picture of him, and his face pleased her. He was pointed out to her on the deck of a yacht, and it pleased her all the more. After this a mutual friend, who knew them both, told her that Stayne was in love with her and spent his nights in devising ways and means to meet her. Then at last they met. Cresencia came away from that meeting in a state of mystic exaltation, such as we are told sometimes comes upon nuns before the Stations of the Cross. As for young Stayne, he filled himself a pipe in our room and said to me: "Ever met that Miss Hromada? Stunning girl and clever as they make 'em. I'm going to work it to get a bid to their place during the tournamant."
