"The People have a right to the Truth as they have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The function of the novelist . . . is to comment upon life as he sees it. No art that is not in the end understood by the People can live or ever did live a single generation. "I never truckled; I never took off the hat to Fashion and held it out for pennies. By God, I told them the truth."

Source: Penn Manuscripts Like Crane, Frank Norris had a short life but it was rich in creative writing. The overriding theme in Norris' fiction is the impact of industrialization on peaceful agricultural communities and the consequent chaos in the lives of people who lived in these communities. His most glaring metaphor is that of the tentacles of the railway tracks spreading and choking the countryside in the appropriately titled book The Octopus . The spirit of the turn-of-the-century San Francisco is impressively captured in McTeague . Its theme, that of a powerful man failing against unexpected adversity, typifies the thrust of the best of Naturalistic writing. by Janice Albert Frank Norris rests eternally in the deep shade of four Irish yew trees. His elegant monument, dedicated by his fraternity brothers at the University of California, is an eight-foot tablet in the Arts and Crafts style. It bears his writer's name, Frank, rather than his given name of Benjamin Franklin Norris, and is embellished with three blades of wheat, in tribute to his epic novel, "The Octopus," about wheat farming in the San Joaquin Valley. Roman numerals (MDCCCLXX-MCMII) blunt the awful fact that this prolific, nationally recognized writer died at the age of 32. Death Valley is the setting for the final scene of Norris's novel
" McTeague."
Norris' novels include Blix The Pit The Octopus (1901), and the memorable McTeague (1899). Of the writers who assembled in San Francisco's Bohemian Club along with Joaquin Miller and Jack London , young Norris was one of the most energetic, filled with ideas.

Frank Norris by Ken Dvorak Born March 5,1870 in Chicago, Norris and his family moved to San Franciso in 1884. Rejecting the opportunity to enter his fathers business, he studied art in Paris during 1887-9. Returning to the U.S. Norris attended The University of California but withdrew prior to completing his degree. He transferred to Harvard University where he began writing the prototypes for "McTeague" and "Vandover and the Brute."; In 1896 Norris journeyed to South Africa where he authored a number of travel essays. Later in the year he returned to San Francisco and became a writer and editorial assistant for "The Wave." During this time he completes the manuscript for "McTeague", a dark depiction of the effect of greed on a married couple. This work was published in 1899 and marked the Norris's affiliation with the a type of writing known as " naturalism ." Naturalism for a writer such as Norris provided an avenue in which he described his characters motivations as determined by biological and environmental determinism. Norris' other major project was "The Epic of the Wheat." Conceived as a trilogy the initial volume, "The Octopus" (1899) denounces the monopolistic practices of the railroad in the distribution of food. "The Pit" (1903) details the mechanisms of commodity speculation. Norris' death from peritonitis on October 25,1902 prevented the writing of "The Wolf" envisioned by the author as the concluding installment to his work.
