Germany Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche October 15 August 25 ) was a profoundly influential German philosopher psychologist , and philologist . Particularly aggressive, he was a severe critic of morality Utilitarianism , contemporary philosophy materialism German idealism German romanticism , and of modernity in general. He is among the most readable philosophers and penned a large number of aphorisms and varied experimental forms of composition. Although his work was distorted and thus identified with Philosophical Romanticism Anti-semitism , and even Nazism , he himself vociferously denied such tendencies in his work, so much to point of directly opposing them. In philosophy and literature, he is often identified as an inspiration for existentialism and postmodernism . His thought is, on many accounts, most difficult to comprehend in any systemized form and remains a vivacious topic for debate

The Birth of Tragedy ) (1872), with its distinction between Apollonian and Dionysian cultures. When ill health forced an early end to his teaching career, Nietzsche began to produce the less scholarly, quasi-philosophical, and anti-religious works for which he is now best known, including Menschliches, allzumenschliches Human, All Too Human Also Sprach Zarathustra Thus Spoke Zarathustra The Gay Science ) (1882), and Beyond Good and Evil ) (1886). Nietzsche never recovered from a serious physical and mental collapse he suffered in 1889; his Der Wille zur Macht Will to Power ) (1901) and the autobiographical Ecce Homo Ecce Homo ) (1908) were published posthumously. Nietzsche sharply criticized the Greek tradition's over-emphasis on reason in his Twilight of the Idols ) (1889). Reliance on abstract concepts in a quest for absolute truth, he supposed, is merely a symptom of the degenerate personalities of philosophers like Socrates . From this Nietzsche concluded that traditional philosophy and religion are both erroneous and harmful for human life; they enervate and degrade our native capacity for achievement.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche German philosopher and poet whose wide-ranging theories of morality and human behaviour have been some of the most influential of the past centuries
Both a philosopher and a poet, who was appointed a professorship at an alarmingly early age. In 1889 he suffered from ill health and resigned from this position after a mental breakdown, from which he never properly recovered. He wrote about many ideas, though the most famous are the avowal of the Superhuman, the doctrine of power, and the dismissal of Christian morality as the morality of a slave.

Quotes of the Day for 15 October 2003 - Nietzsche
Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was born at Röcken bei Lützen, Prussia on this day in 1844, the 49th birthday of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia. The boy was named after the king, and in Ecce Homo Nietzsche wrote, "There was at all events one advantage in the choice of this day to my birth; my birthday throughout the whole of my childhood was a day of public rejoicing." His father died five years later, and he was raised by his mother, two sisters, and two aunts. He studied at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig before he was drafted into the artillery, he was discharged after being thrown from a horse. He was appointed a professor at the University of Basel where he began his writing. There's much to like and dislike in Nietzsche's work, although it's quite possible that the parts the Nazis liked so much had been edited by his anti-Semitic sister. Arrogance in persons of merit affronts us more than arrogance in those without merit: Merit itself is an affront.
