Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900)
"...Let us face facts: the people have triumphed or the slaves, the mob, the herd, whatever you wish to call them and if the Jews brought it about, then no nation ever had a more universal mission on earth. The lords are a thing of the past, and the ethics of the common man is completely triumphant. I don't deny that this triumph might be looked upon as a kind of blood poisoning, since it has resulted in a mingling of the races, but there can be no doubt that the intoxication has succeeded. The 'redemption' of the human race (from the lords, that is) is well under way; everything is rapidly becoming Judaized, or Christianized, or mob-ized the word makes no difference...." The Birth of Tragedy and The Genealogy of Morals , translated by Francis Golffing, Doubleday Anchor Books, 1956, p.169-170] Will the progress of research prove that justice is worthless and mercy hateful? [Thomas Henry Huxley, The Nineteenth Century , November 1885, quoted by Stephen Jay Gould, Bully for Brontosaurus Several features of Nietzsche's thought have been treated elsewhere in these pages.

German philosopher who reasoned that Christianity's emphasis on the afterlife makes its believers less able to cope with earthly life. He argued that the ideal human being, the Ubermensch, would be able to channel passions creatively instead of suppressing them. His written works include Beyond Good and Evil (1886) and Thus Spake Zarathustra (1883-1892).
Nietzsche, Friedrich (Wilhelm) Nietzsche's contention that traditional values had lost their influence over individuals was expressed in his proclamation “God is dead.” His claim that new values could be created to replace traditional ones led to his concept of the overman, or superman ( transhuman ) . According to Nietzsche, the masses conform to tradition, whereas the overman is secure, independent, and individualistic. The overman feels deeply, but his passions are rationally controlled. The overman creates a “master morality” that reflects the strength and independence of one who is liberated from all values, except those he deems valid.
Nietzsche denied that any overmen had yet arisen, but he mentioned individuals who could serve as models, including Greek philosopher Socrates, Italian artists

    Nietzsche, Friedrich Wilhelm
German philosopher, poet, and classical philologist, who became one of the most provocative and influential thinkers of the 19th century.
    Life and Works
In addition to the influence of Greek culture, particularly the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle , Nietzsche was influenced by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, by the theory of evolution, and by his friendship with the German composer Richard Wagner.
A prolific writer, he wrote several major works, among them The Birth of Tragedy (1872; trans. 1966), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883-85; trans. 1954), Beyond Good and Evil (1886; trans. 1966), On the Genealogy of Morals (1887; trans. 1966), The Antichrist (1888; trans. 1954), Ecce Homo (1889; trans. 1966), and The Will to Power (1901; trans. 1910).
One of Nietzsche's fundamental contentions was that traditional values (represented primarily by Christianity) had lost their power in the lives of individuals. He expressed this in his proclamation "God is dead." He was convinced that traditional values represented a "slave morality," a morality created by weak and resentful individuals who encouraged such behavior as gentleness and kindness because the behavior served their interests. Nietzsche claimed that new values could be created to replace the traditional ones, and his discussion of the possibility led to his concept of the overman or superman.

Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (1844-1900) German Philosopher, Poet
After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands.
All in all, punishment hardens and renders people more insensible; it concentrates; it increases the feeling of estrangement; it strengthens the power of resistance.
All truth is simple. - Is not this a double lie?
And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.
Beware of those in whom the will to punish is strong.
By seeking the beginnings of things, a man becomes a crab. The historian looks backwards: in the end he also believes backwards.
Can a donkey be tragic? To perish beneath a load that one can neither bear nor throw off? This is the case of the Philosopher.
Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.
Errors of haste are seldom committed singly. The first time a man always does too much. And precisely on that account he commits a second error, and then he does too little.
If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.

    Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche Quotes
What is evil? - Whatever springs from weakness. Plato was a bore. Perhaps I know best why it is man alone who laughs; he alone suffers so deeply that he had to invent laughter. "Faith" means not wanting to know what is true. Almost two thousand years, and no new god! Morality is the best of all devices for leading mankind by the nose. What is done from love is always beyond good and evil. This is what is hardest: to close the open hand because one loves. Hope is the worst of evils, for it prolongs the torments of Man. Arrogance in persons of merit affronts us more than arrogance in those without merit: merit itself is an affront. No one can draw more out of things, books included, than he already knows. A man has no ears for that to which experience has given him no access. The secret of reaping the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment of life is to live dangerously. To live in a way as if life has no sense at all - here is what its sense is. He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.

    Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche
"How did reason come into the world? As is fitting, in an irrational manner, by accident. One will have to guess at it as at a riddle." - Nietzsche, "The Dawn" circa 1881 Few philosophers have come to be as widely misunderstood. Fewer still have suffered the indignity of having their views and writings bastardized by those that were trusted to do otherwise. In Nietzsche, we have both... coupled with the truth... a man angry with his people, his nation, and with society as a whole. Taken to its extreme, Nietzschean thought borders on the nihilistic... though Nietzsche was by no means a nihilist. Taken at face value, it cries out against religion... though Nietzsche did not harbor disdain for all faiths. A man often taken so very seriously... and yet a man who could certainly laugh at himself.
    Biographical information
Nietzsche was born in 1844. His father, a Lutheran minister, died in 1849. He spent his childhood days surrounded by his mother, his sister, and two aunts. After attending a first rate boarding school (Schulpforta), he went on to study classical philology at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig. At 24 years of age, he earned a professorship at Basel, which is where he truly came to be noticed. At Basel, Nietzsche was the younger colleague of Jacob Burckhardt and Franz Overbeck. His relationship with Overbeck solidified with the two becoming lifelong friends and associates. During the Franco-Prussian war, Nietzsche left Basel and volunteered as a medical orderly on active duty. His time in the military was short and he returned to Basel in a state of shattered health. Instead of waiting to heal, he pushed headlong into a more fervent schedule of study than ever before. In 1872, he published his first book: The Birth of Tragedy.
