Not Springtoo lavish of her bud and leaf
But Autumn, with sad eyes and brow austere,
When fields are bare, and woods are brown and sere,
And leaden skies weep their exhaustless grief.
Spring is so much too bright, since Spring is brief.
And in our hearts is Autumn all the year,
Least sad when the wide pastures are most drear,
And fields grieve most robbed of the last gold sheaf.
For when the plough goes down the brown wet field
A delicate doubtful throb of hope is ours
What if this coming Spring at last should yield
Joy, with her too profuse unasked-for flowers?
Not all our Springs of commonplace and pain
Have taught us now that Autumn hope is vain. Text from Sonnets of This Century
    Dead Leaves
Not Summer's crown of scent the red rose weaves,
Not hawthorn perfume blown o'er bloom-strewn grass,
Not violets' whispers as the children pass,
Nor new-mown hay, crisp scent of yellow sheaves,
Nor lilac perfume in the soft May eves,
Nor any scent that Springtime can amass

Nesbit (1858-1924) also authored fiction, drama, and poetry for adults. In addition she was active in political causes and together with her husband, Hubert Bland, the playwright Bernard Shaw, and others, founded the Fabian Society in England to further socialist aims. Early Life Nesbit was born August 15, 1858, in London to Sarah and John Collis Nesbit, a chemist who taught at an agricultural college in south London that had been established by his father. Nesbit's earliest years appear idyllic as she and her brothers, Arthur and Harry, were free to roam and play on the expansive grounds of the school. This period came to an abrupt end, however, with the sudden death of her father at age 43 in 1862. Nesbit's mother assumed the role of providing for her family, remaining connected with the college as an administrator until t.....

Text: Grim Tales
Note by Dick Collins: Edith Nesbit (1858-1924), best-known as a children's writer, also wrote several ghost stories, published in magazines and collected as Grim Tales . A committed Fabian Socialist and Feminist, she was the author of Ballads and Lyrics of Socialism
To be rich is a luxurious sensation, the more so when you have plumbed the depths of hard-up-ness as a Fleet Street hack, a picker-up of unconsidered pars, a reporter, an unappreciated journalist; all callings utterly inconsistent with one's family feeling and one's direct descent from the Dukes of Picardy. But my legacy almost put Mildred out of my head, especially as she was staying with friends in the country. Before the gloss was off my new mourning, I was seated in my aunt's armchair in front of the fire in the drawing-room of my own house. My own house! It was grand, but rather lonely. I did think of Mildred just then. "Had my aunt had this frame long?"

(11.) M. Daphne Kutzer claims that Nesbit romanticizes the imperialist project, portraying the process of "removing treasure from the colonies and bringing it home to England as both good and natural" (69). But Nesbit's attitude toward empire-building isat the very leastambivalent. Not only does she implicitly equate colonists with greedy, unethical financiers in The Story of the Treasure Seekers, she mercilessly and consistently satirizes the paternalist, philanthropic impulse that served as a key justification for imperialism. "Do-gooding" of all kinds gets sent up in her stories; she makes fun not only of the children's efforts to aid the poor, but also of adults' attempts to improve children and other adults, including foreigners.
