Lorraine Vivian Hansberry is born in Chicago, on May 19, the daughter of a prominent real estate broker and the niece of a Howard University professor of African history. The Hansberry family lives at 5330 S. Calumet Avenue on the South Side of Chicago. Hansberry begins school at Betsy Ross Elementary at 61st Street and Wabash Avenue. The Hansberry family moves to 6140 Rhodes Avenue, in an all-white neighborhood near the University of Chicago. Hostile residents attack their home. A state judge rules that the Hansberrys have to move. They appeal to the Supreme Court. The Hansberrys and the NAACP win the U.S. Supreme Court Case Hansberry v. Lee. Richard Wright publishes Native Son The United States enters World War II. Hansberry enters Englewood High School at 6201 S. Stewart Ave. and wins a writing award for a short story about football during her freshman year.
Her father dies of a cerebral hemorrhage in Mexico, where he had planned to relocate his family to escape U.S. racism.

A n I nterview with M r. S ol By Robert J. Nemiroff
Used with permission. Mornings just wouldn't be the same without him. He really does light up our life. But did we ever thank him, even once? No, never. We should consider ourselves lucky that he doesn't get overheated. Astronomy Magazine thus decided to thank that wonderful star of ours, Sol, for all those billions of years of free sunlight; tax free sunlight. We also thanked him for that really great gravitational field of his that keeps us from cavorting around the galaxy. To our surprise he granted us an exclusive interview. We found out that being a star isn't always sunshine. Astronomy Magazine : Mr. Sun, how did you become a star?
Sol, our Sun : Please, call me Sol. I answered an ad. "Galaxy Now Forming, Stars Needed." The ad made it look real easy. Just sit around, make hydrogen into helium. Have everyone look up to you. Have a career where you can really shine. And I always thought I had what it took to be a star, you know. I was young, I had great big clouds of hydrogen. The actual triggering event was the tragic death of a star right in our own neighborhood. This shocked me and a lot of other large young gas regions into several new stages of development. It totally changed our future. Ironically, many of us eventually decided we wanted to become stars ourselves.

Source: Voices from the Gaps: LH Deeply committed to the Black struggle for equality and human rights, Lorraine Hansberry brilliant career as a writer was cut short by her death when she was only 35. A Raisin in the Sun was the first play written by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway. It won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award - Hansberry was the youngest and the first black writer to receive this award. Hansberry's purpose was to show "the many gradations in even one Negro family." The characters suffer, hope, dream, and triumph over the enormous barriers erected by the dominant culture. Celebrated drama critic Brook Atkinson wrote: "She has told the inner as well as the outer truths about a Negro family in Chicago. The play has vigor as well as veracity and is likely to destroy the complacency of anyone who sees it." The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window is concerned with the moral problems of a Jewish intellectual in Greenwich Village. In discussing the play, Hansberry wrote: "The silhouette of the Western intellectual poised in hesitation before the flames of involvement was an accurate symbolism of my closest friends."

Cosmos In The Classroom 2000
"Cosmos In The Classroom 2000" Book On Teaching Intro Astronomy Published By The Astronomical Society Of The Pacific Click here for information about Cosmos in the Classroom 2004 At the July 2000 meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, over 150 astronomy instructors from around the country met for three days to discuss techniques for teaching the introductory college astronomy course for non-science majors. All the presenters at this historic meeting were asked to prepare handouts, so that participants could take home a written record of the proceedings. Now the non-profit Society is making a 334-page loose-leaf book of these handouts, entitled "Cosmos in the Classroom 2000," available to any astronomy instructors who were not able to attend. The 81 papers cover such topics as:
  • practical advice from research on how students really learn better ways of assessing student performance than boring multiple-choice quizzes ways to get out of lecture mode, even in big classes
