Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. From Los Alamos to Trinity Site, here's where to learn about the atomic bomb's development EVER SINCE SPANISH explorers struggled over its harsh terrain, this scorching alkaline flat southeast of Socorro has been known as Jornada del Muerto: Journey of Death. It's an evocative name; even when you cross it by car, this barren landscape can still be intimidating. But the centuries-old name takes on a peculiar and prophetic resonance when you stop and contemplate this site's role as the place where the first atomic bomb was tested. That teston July 16, 1945marked not only a turning point in World War II but the start of the Atomic Age. It was the culmination of work on the Manhattan Project, an amazing technological achievement that began 50 years ago at Los Alamos, northwest of Santa Fe.

While in Old Town, you will enjoy walking along narrow streets and down numerous pathways to more than 100 shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants. Just down San Felipe Street from the Mansion is Albuquerque’s historic Old Town Plaza. Here you will find the charming San Felipe de Neri Church built 75 years before the US was founded. It is surrounded by the picturesque Plaza and gazebo. Also within walking distance from the Mansion, set just on the eastern edge of Old Town, is the Albuquerque Museum. The museum houses the art and history of New Mexico in painting, sculpture and artifacts. Be certain to look for the children and adult workshops. Across the street from Old Town’s neighborhood park, two giant bronze dinosaur sculptures mark the entrance to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the state's largest museum. In the museum you will find billions of years of natural history as well as a popular Dynamax Theater. And there is more! Included among attractions within a three mile radius of the Mansion are the Albuquerque Zoo, The BioPark, The National Atomic Museum, and Central Avenue nightclubs and restaurants (old Route 66).

Albuquerque is an intriguing combination of old and new, where the glories of nature surround an exciting modern city. It was once a frontier community and there is still plenty of evidence of this in the Old Town where shops and galleries are housed in historic adobe buildings, set among patios and winding paths. The area is considered to be Albuquerque's soul, at the hub of its history, culture and community life.
This is also a highly cosmopolitan city boasting diverse cultures and cuisines, pursuits and panoramas. There are plenty of museums and galleries to visit if you want to stay in town, but a drive along the Crest National Scenic Byway to the summit of the Sandia Mountains is extremely picturesque, as is the breathtaking scenery found in places like the Petroglyph National Monument and Coronado State Monument. You can even walk along the cottonwood-lined river at the Rio Grande Nature Centre, where two miles of trails wind through wooded areas to the sandy banks of the Rio Grande River.

Background
Albuquerque's roads lead to some of the most breathtaking scenery and attractions in New Mexico. The towering Sandia Mountains are a dramatic backdrop for Petroglyph National Monument and Coronado State Monument on the west side. Some of our views are man-made. Albuquerque is so serious about its public art that even bus riders can sit on a blue tiled sculpture while waiting for the next bus. Get back to nature and walk along the cottonwood-lined river at the Rio Grande Nature Center, or take a drive along the Sandia Crest National Scenic Byway to the summit of the Sandia Mountains. Leah has put together some suggested itineraries for you.

The National Atomic Museum,
Kirtland Air Force Base,
Albuquerque, New Mexico Since its opening in 1969, the objective of the National Atomic museum has been to provide a readily accessible repository of educational materials, and information on the Atomic Age. In addition, the museum's goal is to preserve, interpret, and exhibit to the public memorabilia of this Age. In late 1991 the museum was chartered by Congress as the United States' only official Atomic museum. Prominently featured in the museum's high bay is the story of the Manhattan Engineer District, the unprecedented 2.2 billion dollar scientific-engineering project that was centered in New Mexico during World War II. The Manhattan Project as it was more commonly called, developed, built, and tested the world's first Atomic bomb in New Mexico. This display also includes casings similar to the only Atomic bombs ever used in warfare. Dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these two bombs helped bring World War II to an end in mid-August 1945. The story of the Manhattan Project's three secret cities, Hanford, Washington, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is also presented in this area. A portion of the museum, the low bay, is devoted to exhibits on the research, development, and use of various forms of nuclear energy. Historical and other traveling exhibits are also displayed in this area. Also found in the low bay is the museum's store, which is operated by the museum's foundation.
