"I am become death, the shatterer of worlds." Shortly after the successful detonation of the first atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, who headed the Manhattan Project, said this, quoting from ancient Hindu texts. This and other valuable information highlight the 51-minute film Ten Seconds That Shook the World , which is shown daily (throughout the day) at this museum, an experience worth fitting into a busy schedule. The museum itself offers the next-best introduction to the nuclear age after the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos, making for an interesting 1- to 2-hour perusal. It traces the history of nuclear-weapons development, beginning with the top-secret Manhattan Project of the 1940s, including a copy of the letter Albert Einstein wrote to President Franklin D. Roosevelt suggesting the possible need to beat the Germans at creating an atomic bomb a letter that surprisingly went ignored for nearly 2 years. You'll find a permanent Marie Curie exhibit in the lobby and full-scale models of the "Fat Man" and "Little Boy" bombs, as well as displays and films on the peaceful application of nuclear technology including nuclear medicine and other alternative energy sources.

Albuquerque (pronounced al–buh–kirk–ee) is the largest city in New Mexico . It is located along the Rio Grande River near the center of the state. Two major interstate highways neatly divide New Mexico into quadrants. Route 25 comes across its northern border from Colorado, wends its way through the north central mountains, then follows the Rio Grande Valley south to El Paso at the borders of Texas and Mexico. Route 40 bisects the state roughly following the path of old Route 66 from the Texas border on the east to the Arizona border on the west. These two major traffic arteries intersect in Albuquerque. Native American Market
At the intersection of these two highways near downtown Albuquerque, the ramps and bridges are all painted in pastel hues of pink, tan and turquoise. The bridge abutments and retaining walls are artistically decorated with Indian designs. The very roads and civil constructions of this city are imbued with the essence of southwestern culture.
Located on a high plateau
The city sprawls across the wide shallow valley of the Rio Grande River nearly 5,000 feet (3,000 m.) above sea level. To the east, the Sandia Mountains form an imposing wall reaching high into the turquoise sky. On the horizon in every other direction, distant hills and mesas punctuate the vast upland plateau. On the western edge of the city, the Rio Grande River lies nearly hidden in its shallow channel at the foot of the low bluffs overlooking the city.

Dooh! I'll recap in point form. — Upon arriving in Santa Fe, in the dark, we promptly got lost in the narrow, winding canyon roads above city centre, eventually having to back down 100 meters of the narrowest, curviest road in our 50' rig. — We drew spectators and detractors ("Why don't you get a smaller car?!?!" quipped one particularly witty local) but no help until a very kind couple we flagged down lead us out of the maze. Thank-you, whoever you are.

At the Kirtland Air Force base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Museum will soon be renamed the "National Museum of Nuclear Science and History," so if you want to see it before the change, visit soon.
Largest airborne device (the Mk 17)
Smallest devce (the Davy Crockett) Though twenty years old this year, the more modern Full Fuzing Option (FFO) B-83. At 2,464 pounds, it could be carried down the street in a pickup truck or Iraqi "technical." (You don't need the casing, just the "physics package.") This is the kind of idea that rightly makes governments nervous. Yield is more than 1 megaton of TNT versus the 13,000 tons of little boy and 18,000 tons of fat man. The world has thousands of similar or better (smaller, lighter) devices in the nuclear-club countries US, France, UK, China, Russian Federation, Israel, South Africa, etc. Something to think about. This is a very interesting museum and is close to several other museums (New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, Albuquerque Museum, Explora Children’s Museum) if you are in the museum mood. They have every available book on the history and development of the United States' Nuclear Weapons Complex and exhibits ranging from actual Fat Man and Little Boy pumpkins (empty cases)..

    Cannon Air Force Base
Cannon Air Force Base, located in eastern New Mexico, is a 4,500 acre facility which has a population of over 10,000 people. Established in 1942, the base is now home for tactical fighter wings. Holloman Air Force Base Holloman Air Force Base sits on the edge of the White Sands Missile Range, near Alamagordo, and uses some of the Range for a practice bombing. Holloman is home of a stealth fighter (F-117) group, and is considered one of the more vital Air Force Bases in the country. Traffic between Holloman and the black-budget test facility at Nevada's Groom Lake, run by the Air Force and the CIA, is reportedly heavy. There is also a biological laboratory on Holloman, which includes a complex known as the Advanced Primate Research Biocontainment Facility.
