In Switzerland I spent most of my time at Geneva that houses a lot of UN buildings. I also visited the Olympic Museum at Lausanne, the snow clad Alps and wonderful locales such as Interlaken, Jungfrau and Grindelwald. Switzerland boasts of some of the most beautiful locales in the whole planet. In France I was mostly confined to Paris. Paris offered a blend of ancient and modern structures ranging from the fascinating Louvre Museum to the modern day wonder called the Eiffel Tower. Italy is famous for it's architectural splendors. Rome is full of superb architectural masterpieces, thanks to great men like Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. The leaning tower at Pisa is indeed a real wonder. The holy city of Vatican is a must see. But the one place that fascinated me the most was the sinking city of Venice. The city is literally drenched in water. In this dream city you will find that roadways have been replaced with waterways, buses with boats and bus stops with boat stops!

June 15, 2005 ike most developers, I have been developing software systems using object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques for many years. So when I read that aspect-oriented programming (AOP) addresses many problems that traditional OOP doesn't solve completely or directly, I wanted to better understand its benefits in real world application development. I thought comparing both techniques would provide some practical insight. So I decided to design a case study: an OOP application in which I identified aspects where AOP might be a good fit. This article presents a similar case study. It begins by introducing a problem domain and then demonstrates two solutions: one that uses OOP and one using AOP. The AOP solution uses a JDK 1.5, JUnit, and AspectWerkz implementation. (The complete source code for both approaches is available in the "Download the Code" section in the left-hand column.) Finally, it demonstrates how to code a few aspects.

Customers pay for the digital books using sophisticated electronic payment mechanisms such as DigiCash, First Virtual or InterPay. When the payment is received, the book distribution server at Books'R'Us sends a digital version of the book electronically to the paying customer. Books'R'Us expects to make higher profits on the digital book due to lower production and distribution costs, and larger markets on the Internet. It turns out, however, that very few books are sold since digital copies of the Books'R'Us book had been widely circulated on UseNet newsgroups, bulletin boards, and had been available for free on alternate ftp sites and Web servers. Books'R'Us retract their digital publishing commitment blaming the ease of re-transmission of digital items on the Internet, and return to traditional paper based publishing.
