Description: eBook for the Mobipocket Reader

Man´s interest in character is founded on an intensely practical need. In whatsoever relationship we deal with our fellows, we base our intercourse largely on our understanding of their characters. The trader asks concerning his customer, «Is he honest?» and the teacher asks about the pupil, «Is he earnest?» The friend bases his friendship on his good opinion of his friend; the foe seeks to know the weak points in the hated one´s make-up; and the maiden yearning for her lover whispers to, herself, «Is he true?» Upon our success in reading the character of others, upon our understanding of ourselves hangs a good deal of our life´s success or failure. Chapter 4: The Rise and Fall of Eugenics (sample)
The Jukes, the Kallikaks, the Zeros, the Nams, the Happy Hickories, the family of Sam Sixty (named for Sam's IQ), the Doolittles. These were some of the cacogenic families ('kakos' is Greek for 'bad') that the eugenics case workers of the late 1800s and first quarter of the 1900s described in their books and reports. All the names were fictitious, not to 'protect the innocent' but to enhance the image that these people were stupid, degenerate, slovenly, shiftless, cacophonic, rotten to the core.
Eugenics caseworkers wrote judgement-laden reports about the families and individual members, compared their habits to those of animals and insects, and calculated how much these families were costing society. The reports sometimes included menacing diagrams, in which a family's first known progenitors were positioned in the center of an ever-widening circle, with succeeding generations fanning outward. These 'family trees' gave the impression that the proliferation of cacogenic individuals was unstoppable. When an individual in a cacogenic family didn't turn out to be as bad as the eugenicists expected, the narrative would include speculation that the person-typically, one in the outermost arc of the circle-had not yet grown old enough to express his or her cacogenic potential or that the odd healthy person was the likely offspring of an illicit relationship that the cacogenic mother had with a healthy man.

The History of Phrenology on the Web by John van Wyhe Search Overview The organs ... Bibliography Reading phrenology
As a wide-spread cultural phenomena, phrenology coloured many aspects of life in the 19th century. This is reflected in countless works of fiction and non-fiction from the period. Many writers found phrenological language useful for describing personality or put familiar phrenological terms in the mouths of their characters. The main-stream British phrenologists, under the leadership of the Edinburgh lawyer George Combe, developed a philosophy of natural laws which, through the books on this site, spread naturalism into every niche of Victorian Britain and America. When Darwin published his Origin of Species (1859), natural selection was received by a readership already well-versed in doctrines esteeming the authority of natural laws. Rather than overturning this scheme, Darwin's views meshed with them readily. This philosophy, almost a religion, of natural laws was predominantly spread by two books which almost everyone who could read (and many who couldn't) knew of in the 19th century. These were: Combe's The Constitution of Man (1828) and Robert Chambers' Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation Constitution is about how natural laws are the ultimate authorities which Man must obey, and their action leads to progress; disobeying them leads to automatic punishment.

Sex Still Repels Many People (distributed by New York Times wire, December 1993)
By James A. Haught
Pope John Paul II recently decreed that unmarried sex, contraception and the like are "evil.'' Iran's parliament is drafting a law to execute repeat sellers of sexual photos. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph destroyed 28,000 copies of its USA Weekend national magazine because a carrot in a photo looked phallic. Editors wrote that the carrot "violates this newspaper's family standards.'' Some West Virginia fundamentalists are trying to make sure that sex education classes in schools don't teach about sex only about abstaining from it. Teays Valley Christian School barred a pregnant girl from this year's graduation ceremony. And North Carolina's 1.2 million Southern Baptists are to turn off their TV sets for a day to protest "moral depravity'' in shows such as NYPD Blue, which contains partial nudity and sex. Obviously, sex still repels many, many people. Despite all the changes wrought by the 30-year "sexual revolution'' millions of unwed couples living together openly, nude lovemaking in most R-rated movies, romantic-looking condom displays in every pharmacy, sex features in every woman's magazine the old taboos remain powerful. America has a split personality relishing sex and condemning it. Our society is a stew of prurience and prudery. We're obsessed with sex and ashamed of it.
