INDEX OF NAMES
Either click on initial letter in the list below, or scroll down the page.
The spelling of Indian names has been standardised, as far as possible, to that of C.E. Buckland, Dictionary of Indian Biography , London, 1906. Where this spelling differs significantly from that of the original documents, both forms are given in this index. In many cases, the spelling has had to be taken from contemporary directories or directly from the documents themselves. Military ranks are those finally achieved by the individuals named, unless they appear in parentheses, in which cases they are the ranks given in the documents, full biographical details being unavailable. Peers are listed under their titles.

JOHN Robert, 4166, Crew lists, Gwynedd AS, Caernarfon. JOHN SAMUEL, 55319,Crew lists, JOHN WILLIAM, 19133, Crew lists, Somerset AS, 18631894
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/official numbers alpha/J.html
Official number alpha index for ship's names beginning with J
The table below is an index of official numbers by ship's name in alphabetical order. It is intended as a finding aid only - it is certainly not a definitive list!
The data has been taken from various sources, such as shipping registers, fishing registers, crew lists and books. However, some of the data was taken from record office catalogues or transcriptions rather than the primary sources. Bear in mind that any transcription introduces errors. There are also one or two deliberate errors as watermarks to make the complete data set identifiable - they should not affect the normal use of the index.
As with any index, check the primary source yourself.
There are currently about 16,000 entries on this index - a small proportion of the 150,000 plus ships that were registered in this period. In keeping with CLIP philosophy, something is better than nothing!
The columns show:
  • The ship's official number. The source document from which the preceding data was drawn. Note that this does not imply that CLIP has transcribed or even verified that document - however, we believe it exists.
For shipping and fishing registers we have added a folio or reference number if we have it.

A World of Difference:
Constructing the "Underclass" in Progressive America

Introduction
[End Page 26] writing that rose in the Gilded Age, crested during the Progressive era, and remained much in evidence, if somewhat changed in form, during the 1920s. The producers of that literature shared Donovan's eagerness to explore what she called "a new world," one replete with "life new and strange": a world of difference. To pursue the origins and implications of the belief that workers and the poor were somehow fundamentally differenta strange breed in classless AmericaI will discuss the experiences of Progressive-era journalists, writers, and social scientists like Frances Donovan who went "down and out," to use the term later coined by George Orwell. That is, they lived and worked in disguise among clerks and waitresses, factory laborers, itinerant workers, beggars, and tramps, in order to observe and to write about them. Jack London's People of the Abyss (1903) is the best-remembered chronicle of such experiences, but I will mainly address an array of lesser-known figures whose books and articles, both in popular magazines and in scholarly journals, contributed importantly to public and academic discussions of American working-class life and poverty.

DESCENDANTS OF ADAM SHERWELL/SHERRILL Part 2
by Jane A. Leavell
I've tried to delete all the descendants of Perkins or Lollar, since they are listed on this site in the histories of those families (and it was such a pain in the buttocks to delete several hundred pages that I won't be updating this history very oftencontact me to see if I have more data). Use the PicoSearch engine on my home page to locate specific people. Good luck, and happy hunting! 399. Civil War Manuscripts at the VHS
The Vermont Historical Society Library contains a significant amount of information about the Civil War. These are some links to help you discover what we have and what is at other institutions. During two months in the spring of 1997 an archivist at the VHS attempted to catalog as many of its Civil War manuscript collections as possible. The list below summaries what we found. Use ARCCAT to conduct full searches. The Civil War cataloging project was funded by a grant from the Ellis Phillips Foundation. Please use the "Call Number" given below when referring to specific collections.
