Murray, John F. Intensive Care: A Doctor's Journal
Genre Journal (275 pp.) Keywords AIDS Death and Dying Drug Addiction Euthanasia ... Tuberculosis Summary In this journal, Murray traces a month-long rotation he spends as attending physician in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of San Francisco General Hospital. For each of the 28 days, Murray presents the patients he sees, both new and ongoing, along with commentary on the care of each patient and on broader issues raised by their cases. In the course of the month, we encounter sixty patients, fifteen of whom die in the ICU. The patients are apparently quite typical for the hospital: cases are dominated by HIV, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and drug abuse, or all four. The ICU is not a very safe place: there are twelve cases of iatrogenic pulmonary edema, and several of hospital-acquired infections. Murray candidly presents both the triumphs and the limitations of contemporary intensive care while giving us vivid glimpses into the lives of both patients and staff. In his epilogue, Murray asks some tough questions about the value of intensive care units, and discusses palliative care, patients' rights to the withholding and withdrawing of life-sustaining therapy, and even physician-assisted suicide, as "more humane"and economically responsiblealternatives to intensive care in cases of advanced terminal illness (270).

Murray, John A Few Short Notes on Tropical Butterflies
Genre Short Story (40 pp.) Keywords Aging Alcoholism Communication Death and Dying ... Women in Medicine Summary The 58 year old plastic surgeon who narrates this story has plenty of problems. He drinks too much and his surgical skills are deteriorating. His wife Maya, a neurosurgeon young enough to be his daughter, has a miscarriage not long after her father dies from a brain tumor. The narrator is plagued by an obsession with butterflies. He seems to have inherited his unnatural interest in these insects from both his father and grandfather. Strangely, the pursuit of butterflies has brought only tragedy to these men. Maya believes her husband's butterfly collection is a curse so she destroys it. Her action seems insufficient to liberate the narrator from the burden of his ancestors. He is convinced that his destiny was dictated by his family years ago. Commentary The physician-narrator of this story is so consumed by the details of life that he often misses the big picture. He grudgingly accepts the fact that his own life is out of control but has difficulty reorganizing it. The doctor is paralyzed by his family legacya preoccupation with butterflies and collecting that overshadows any interest in establishing and maintaining meaningful human relationships.

He published in this year his Definitions of Rare or Hitherto Undescribed Australian Plants . In 1857 Rostock university gave him the honorary degree of doctor of medicine, and in the same year he was appointed director of the botanical gardens at Melbourne. Mueller immediately arranged for the building of what is now known as the national herbarium, and began his account of new plants discovered in Australia, Fragmenta Phytographiae Australiae , which was written in Latin and published by the government of Victoria in 11 volumes between 1858 and 1881. Under Mueller's care the gardens became very popular, large numbers of plants had been planted and labelled, and the contents of the herbarium were continually increasing. Later Mueller's private collection and other gifts were made to it, so that eventually an enormous collection was labelled and housed in it. In 1858 Sir William Hooker was suggesting to Mueller that he should come to England and write a systematic monograph on the Australian flora. Mueller found himself unable to do this and eventually agreed to collaborate in a work of this kind to be undertaken by Mr George Bentham. It had been hoped that this work could have been begun in 1859, but it was not until 1863 that the first volume appeared. Meanwhile Mueller had published in 1860-2 volume I of

Ballencrieff is surrounded by golf courses and castles just half an hour from Edinburgh. The castle is an ideal venue for a small Wedding The vaulted dining area and kitchen provide today's visitors with an ideal location to savour traditional Scottish fare. Authenticity was the guiding principle during the recent restoration of this lovely historic home. 72. Richard Doyle
Abstract Son of a cartoonist, born in London in in 1824 and educated at home by his father he began having work published at the age of fifteen. Doyle, like his father, was a devout Roman Catholic, and in 1850 he resigned from Punch Magazine in protest over the magazine's hostility to the Pope. John Murray, the publisher of the Quarterly Magazine, later claimed that Wiseman, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England, had forced Doyle to resign under the threat of excommunication. He died in 1883.

Murray, John O’Kane, MA, MD Lessons in English Literature. With a short dictionary of British, Irish, and American authors. Baltimore John Murphy Co.,
http://www.orgs.muohio.edu/anthologies/school/Murray,John.htm
Lessons in English Literature. With a short dictionary of British, Irish, and American authors Preface The title of this little volume scarcely conveys an adequate idea of the wide range of subjects discussed between its covers. The work is divided into four Books. Book I. gives a brief history of the English Language, a birds-eye view of its composition and a history of English Literature from Caedmon to Chaucer. Book II. covers the English Literature of Great Britain from Chaucer to the present time. Book IV. embraces in brief a the English Literature of America, and ends with a Short Dictionary of authors. Literature takes a color from the times in which it is produced. It is best studied in connection with history. I have omitted long extracts. In a work of this nature they serve no good purpose. The whole should never be judged by a part. How silly and illogical it is to represent Julius Caesar or Evangeline by two or three pages! The quotations I have scattered here and there are so many gems to be fixed in the mind as an exercise of taste and memory. My book has grown by degrees during the last ten years.
