Whereas many writers try to achieve distinction by writing about exotic characters or exotic situations, the Canadian author Alice Munro has chosen to write about very ordinary events in the lives of very ordinary women. In fact, the significant events in her stories are so apparently inconsequential as to drive a blurb-writer to despair. (For instance, on the back cover of T. Coraghessan Boyle's collection Descent of Man, one finds the following capsule descriptions of stories: ``A primate-center researcher becomes romantically involved with a chimp; a Norse poet overcomes bard-block; ... and Lassie abandons Timmy for a randy coyote.'' For Alice Munro's book, a similar attempt at capsule descriptions would result in something like, ``A family visits friends for dinner on Labor Day; a woman recovering from a recent love affair spends a day on a remote island and has conversations with a group of three working men and an elderly gentleman interested in Willa Cather; while a woman is having dinner at the house of a man she is in love with, another, much younger woman shows briefly up at the door; two old women in a nursing home cross swords over a male stroke victim who is unable to talk.'' Somehow it is hard to imagine that a lot of copies of the book would be sold on the basis of such capsule descriptions.) The subject of many of these stories is what is generally called romantic love, either love that the characters are doing their best to make work, or love they are recovering from. But there is little romance in the love Munro's women find, and certainly none of the grand passions and infatuations with which fiction so often concerns itself. Instead, Munro's women find comfort in the best love available to them, or are unhappy over the loss of a love that was not all that good to start with.

"My aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel," said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; "in the meantime you must try and put up with me."
Framton Nuttel endeavored to say the correct something which should duly Hatter the niece of the moment without unduly discounting the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing
"I know how it will be," his sister had said when he was preparing to migrate to this rural retreat; "you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice."
Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction came into the nice division.
"Do you know many of the people round here?" asked the niece, when she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion.

    Sredni Vashtar
    BY SAKI (H. H. MUNRO)
Conradin was ten years old, and the doctor had pronounced his professional opinion that the boy would not live another five years. The doctor was silky and effete, and counted for little, but his opinion was endorsed by Mrs. De Ropp, who counted for nearly everything. Mrs. De Ropp was Conradin's cousin and guardian, and in his eyes she represented those three-fifths of the world that are necessary and disagreeable and real; the other two-fifths, in perpetual antagonism to the foregoing, were summed up in himself and his imagination. One of these days Conradin supposed he would succumb to the mastering pressure of wearisome necessary things-such as illnesses and coddling restrictions and drawn-out dulness. Without his imagination, which was rampant under the spur of loneliness, he would have succumbed long ago.
Mrs. De Ropp would never, in her honestest moments, have confessed to herself that she disliked Conradin, though she might have been dimly aware that thwarting him ``for his good'' was a duty which she did not find particularly irksome. Conradin hated her with a desperate sincerity which he was perfectly able to mask. Such few pleasures as he could contrive for himself gained an added relish from the likelihood that they would be displeasing to his guardian, and from the realm of his imagination she was locked out-an unclean thing, which should find no entrance.
The Houdan hen was never drawn into the cult of Sredni Vashtar. Conradin had long ago settled that she was an Anabaptist. He did not pretend to have the remotest knowledge as to what an Anabaptist was, but he privately hoped that it was dashing and not very respectable. Mrs. De Ropp was the ground plan on which he based and detested all respectability.

Scottish writer and journalist, born in Burma (now Myanmar), raised mostly in England although he spent time in continental Europe and Russia as well. He was killed in action in Word War I. While often regarded as a satirist whose main target was the pretension of Georgian/Edwardian England, Saki produced much that has a nasty edge.

Name: Saki (H. H. Munro) Birth Date: 18 December 1870 Death Date: 14 November 1916 Saki (H. H. Munro) Extended Biography Hector Hugh Munro (Saki), one of many British writers to perish during World War I, is thought to have died before his writing attained its full potential. While he wrote short stories throughout his career, he eventually turned to writing novels and plays as well, seeking a genre with a larger scope than that of the short story, which, as he conceived it, was too limited to allow either for character development or for the sustained treatment of issues, particularly the issue of Britain's national survival. The single situation that engages attention through clever plot turns and witticisms in his short stories becomes in his novels one of a series whose variety allows for more extensive development of character and theme in the novels. Hector Hugh Munro was born in Akyab, Burma, the third child of Charles Augustus Munro, a career officer in the British army, and Mary Frances Mercer Munro, who died in winter 1872. Deciding that it was impossible to raise three small children .....

    The Open Window Study Guide
by Saki (H. H. Munro) Introduction "The Open Window" is Saki's most popular short story. It was first collected in Beasts and SuperBeasts in 1914. Saki's wit is at the height of its power in this story of a spontaneous practical joke played upon a visiting stranger. The practical joke recurs In many of Saki's stories, but "The Open Window" is perhaps his most successful and best known example of the type. Saki dramatizes here the conflict between reality and imagination, demonstrating how difficult it can be to distinguish between them. Not only does the unfortunate Mr. Nuttel fall victim to the story's joke, but so does the reader. The reader is at first inclined to laugh at Nuttel for being so gullible. However, the reader, too, has been taken in by Saki's story and must come to the realization that he or she is also inclined to believe a well-told and interesting tale. This is a complete section of the The Open Window Literature Study Guide.
