Munro, Hector Hugh (18701916). Saki, pseudonym of HECTOR HUGH Munro , British writer, born in Burma (now known as Myanmar), and educated in England.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/M/MunroHH/1.html
Munro, Hector Hugh Saki, pseudonym of HECTOR HUGH MUNRO , British writer, born in Burma (now known as Myanmar), and educated in England. In 1894 he joined the editorial staff of the London newspaper Westminster Gazette for which he wrote a series of lightly satirical political sketches reminiscent of the writings of the English author Lewis Carroll. The highly popular articles were collected as The Westminster Alice (1902). He enlisted in the British army at the outbreak of World War I and was killed in action in France. Saki is best known as a writer of short stories, many of which have fantastic settings and characters. They are distinguished by an urbane wit and delicate, often biting irony. A collected edition, the Short Stories of Saki, was posthumously published in 1930. Among his other published works are the novels The Unbearable Bassington (1912) and When William Came (1913).

Munro's columns and short stories were published under the pen name 'Saki', who was the cupbearer in The Rubayat of Omar Khayyam , an ancient Persian poem. Saki's stories were full of witty sayings - such as "The cook was a good cook, as cooks go; and as cooks go she went." Sometimes they also included coded references to homosexuality. "A little inaccuracy sometimes saves tons of explanations." (from The Square Egg Saki was born Hector Hugh Munro in Akyab, Burma (now Myanmar), the son of Charles Augustus Munro, an inspector-general in the Burma police. Munro's mother, the former Mary Frances Mercer, died in 1872 - she was killed by a runaway cow in an English country lane. Munro was brought up in England with his brother and sister by aunts who frequently used the birch and whip. He was educated at Pencarwick School in Exmouth and Bedford Grammar School. From 1887 he traveled with his family in France, Germany and Switzerland. In 1891 his father settled in Devon, where he worked as a teacher. In 1893 Munro joined the Burma police. Three years later he was back in England and started his career as a journalist, writing for the Westminster Gazette In 1900 Munro's first book, THE RISE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE, appeared. It is a historical study modelled upon Gibbon's famous

HECTOR HUGH MUNRO, who wrote under the name SAKI was born on 18 December 1870, at Akyab, Burma. His father was an officer in the Burma police. Saki was sent to live with two maiden aunts in Devon at the age of two. Although these aunts were probably well-intentioned, they brought him up in a regime of strictness and severity. This left an indelible mark on his character, and is immortalized in a number of his short stories, especially Sredni Vashtar and The Lumber Room Munro was educated at Exmouth and at Bedford grammar school. He joined the Burma police but soon turned to journalism. He wrote political satires for the Westminster Gazette , was foreign correspondent for the Morning Post in the Balkans, Russia, and Paris. He moved to London in 1908. He wrote four series of short stories: Reginald in 1904, Reginald in Russia in 1910, The Chronicles of Clovis in 1912, and Beasts and Super-Beasts 1914. His stories frequently reflect the manners and attitudes of Edwardian society, from the standpoint of the sardonic insider. They are beautifully polished, epigrammatic pieces of writing.

In a profession that spends a lot of its time analysing its own backside, what do you expect? Journalists do get a bum deal. We are criticised for our lack of sensitivity, berated for our opinions, our motives are mistrusted in the most meaningless of conversations and the time we devote to being 'on the job' would apparently be halved if we stayed out of the pub. How many times do you see a journalist in a TV drama portrayed as a hard-drinking, soon-to-be divorced, overweight guy in his mid-40s? Oh yeah, and with an accent, ranging from broad Scottish to suburbian Mockney. Only about 87% of my fellow journalists fit that stereotype. Shocking

HECTOR HUGH MUNRO was a Scot, born in Burma, and, like Kipling, was sent back to England at an early age to be brought up by two strict aunts. In his early twenties he returned to India and worked there with the Burma Military Police. He had always been delicate, and thirteen months in Burma weakened him so dangerously that he was obliged to return once more to England. His health recovered, he wrote "Alice in Westminster"political sketches in the Lewis Carroll style, published in the Westminster Gazette ; and later, during six years as foreign correspondent in Russia and the Balkans, he wrote and sent back to England many of the humorous short stories by which he is best remembered. His pseudonym was Saki, cupbearer in the
In World War I Munro enlisted as a private, in spite of several offers of a commission, and went to France as corporal at the age of forty-six. In November, 1916, he was killed in the battle of Beaumont-Hamel.
Saki had a rare sense of humor, and his stories, like himself, are full of high spirits, wit, and urbanity. "The empty glass we turn down for him," said Christopher Morley, "is the fragile hollow-stemmed goblet meant for dryest champagne: it is of the finest." Message Board Back to Classic Short Stories

The occupants of the carriage were a small girl, and a smaller girl, and a small boy. An aunt belonging to the children occupied one corner seat, and the further corner seat on the opposite side was occupied by a bachelor who was a stranger to their party, but the small girls and the small boy emphatically occupied the compartment. Both the aunt and the children were conversational in a limited, persistent way, reminding one of the attentions of a housefly that refuses to be discouraged. Most of the aunt's remarks seemed to begin with "Don't," and nearly all of the children's remarks began with "Why?" The bachelor said nothing out loud. "Don't, Cyril, don't," exclaimed the aunt, as the small boy began smacking the cushions of the seat, producing a cloud of dust at each blow. "Come and look out of the window," she added.
