John Muir: A Brief Biography
John Muir - farmer, inventor, sheepherder, naturalist, explorer, writer, and conservationist - was born on April 21 , 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland. Until the age of eleven he attended the local schools of that small coastal town. In 1849, the Muir family emigrated to the United States, settling first at Fountain Lake and then moving to Hickory Hill Farm near Portage, Wisconsin. Muir's father was a harsh disciplinarian and worked his family from dawn to dusk. Whenever they were allowed a short period away from the plow and hoe, Muir and his younger brother would roam the fields and woods of the rich Wisconsin countryside. John became more and more the loving observer of the natural word. He also became an inventor, a carver of curious but practical mechanisms in wood. He made clocks that kept accurate time and created a wondrous device that tipped him out of bed before dawn. In 1860, Muir took his inventions to the state fair at Madison, where he won admiration and prizes. Also that year he entered the University of Wisconsin. He made fine grades, but after three years left Madison to travel the northern United States and Canada, odd-jobbing his way through the yet unspoiled land. In 1867, while working at a carriage parts shop in Indianapolis, Muir suffered a blinding eye injury that would change his life. When he regained his sight one month later, Muir resolved to turn his eyes to the fields and woods. There began his years of wanderlust. He walked a thousand miles from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico. He sailed to Cuba , and later to Panama, where he crossed the Isthmus and sailed up the West Coast, landing in San Francisco in March, 1868. From that moment on, though he would travel around the world, California became his home.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
John Muir April 21 December 24 ) was an environmentalist, naturalist, traveler, writer, inventor, and scientist. He is, however, probably best remembered as one of the greatest champions of the Yosemite area's natural wonders. He thought that nature was a primary source revealing the character of God and that the Sierra Nevada was sacred ground, even calling it the "Range of Light." Anticipating the animal rights movement , Muir argued with vigor about what he considered the questionable ethics of hunting (calling it the "murder business"). He also anticipated modern conservation biologists by recognizing that everything in nature is connected and that the preservation of large tracts of unfragmented wilderness was the only real way to ensure a healthy ecosystem . Because of this, he argued for the protection of entire river drainages, instead of isolated valleys.

John Muir (1838 - 1914)
Born in Dunbar, East Lothian, Muir only spent the first few years of his life in Scotland as his family emigrated to Wisconsin, USA in 1849. He did however, fondly remember his discovery of his homeland's "wild places and wild creatures".
In America, his love for the natural world grew as he roamed the fields and woodlands near his home. Despite receiving no formal education, he taught himself maths, literature and philosophy and became a budding inventor. Following university, he worked for four years as an inventor and industrial engineer. However, in 1867 an accident left him temporarily blind and when his sight returned, he left his 'industrial life' to turn back to his love of wild places. He set out on a 1000 mile walk from Florida to Cuba, but throughout the remainder of his life he also travelled throughout the rest of America, Alaska, Australia, South America, Africa and Europe.
His heart however belonged to California - to the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite Valley. He studied and wrote about the glaciers in the Sierra and proposed a controversial theory on the formation of Yosemite Valley through glaciation. He also discovered Glacier Bay in Alaska.
He became a successful writer and through his articles was able to highlight the destruction of the countryside by livestock. Largely through his efforts, the first National Park was set up in Yosemite in 1890 and many Americans view Muir as "The Father of National Parks". He continued campaigning for the conservation of wild places until the year before his death.

MUIR'S TRAVELS -MUIR'S LEGACY- Haines, Alaska's John Muir Association JOHN MUIR (1838 - 1914) JOHN MUIR was a naturalist. He loved to "go to wild places" go experience the wonders of nature. Alaska, like Yosemite in California, was one of Muir's favorite places. Alaska is where Muir came to visit real wilderness after Yosemite became popular.
Inspired by memories of his boyhood home in Dunbar, Scotland, his experiences in his adopted home of North America, and his extensive travels in Africa, Alaska, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, India, Central and South America, Russia and New Zealand, John Muir ultimately became the archetypal global citizen and a man for all ages.
His writings enshrine him with the great 19th Century Transcendentalist philosophers of America, Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Walt Whitman. As adventurer, explorer, scientist, author, and finally charasmatic and visionary activist, Muir Fathered the modern National Parks and Conservation Movements the monumental legacy of a uniquely sensitive spirit and towering genius. The generations that follow must attend to his words and deeds which may be the salvation of the planet.

John Muir, 1838 - 1914
John Muir was a botanist, mountaineer, glaciologist, ecologist, naturalist, and conservationist whose views were closely aligned with American Transcendentalism . Influenced heavily by the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau , he shared their regard for the unity, order, and harmony of nature, their trust in nature's power to illuminate the higher laws of the mind, and their pantheistic approach to imagination and transcendence. Although their ideas were by no means the same as his, Muir devotedly carried and marked copies of Emerson's and Thoreau's works on his hikes and climbs in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere in the west. In May 1871, Emerson visited Muir at Yosemite in California and the pair quickly became friends. Emerson admiringly listed him in his journal along with Thomas Carlyle , Thoreau, and several others, among those he called "My men."

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The Winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." John Muir On April 21, 1838, John Muir, one of the world's greatest naturalists, was born. Muir emigrated from Scotland to America in 1849. During his life, Muir was a farmer, inventor, wanderer, writer, conservationist, explorer, aidvisor to presidents, and above all, a naturalist. President Theodore Roosevelt once called him "an emphatically good citizen." From an early age, Muir loved the outdoors, but hard work gave him little opportunity to spend much time in the natural world. A serious injury at the age of 29 caused Muir to turn to nature. He walked a thousand miles from the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico. From there, he sailed, walked and rode through much of Central America and California. Ultimately, it was the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite that became his spiritual home. He once called the Sierra "the most divinely beautiful of all the mountain chains I have ever seen." Throughout his life, Muir traveled and wrote extensively on what he saw. His focus was not just on the beauty of the wonderful places he visited, but also on the risk of their destruction. A series of articles pointed out the losses caused by unrestrained grazing, logging and overuse.

Naturalist and conservationist. Born in Dunbar, Muir emigrated with his family to Wisconsin (USA) in 1849, where he began to develop an interest in the natural world. He was the founder of the U.S. National Park system and regarded as the father of the modern environmental movement. Muir also formed the Sierra Club , dedicated to protecting the environment, and became its first president (1892). He was an early explorer of the Yosemite Valley and did much to ensure its protection. Muir is remembered in the names of numerous physical features and educational institutions in the USA, together with the John Muir Country Park and John Muir Birthplace in his native Dunbar. The John Muir Trust , which was a partner in the purchase and restoration of the Birthplace , was formed in 1983 for the preservation of Britain's wild places. The Trust owns and manages six estates in Scotland totalling 19,000 Ha (47,000 acres); namely Sconser, Strathaird and Torrin on the Isle of Skye, Schiehallion in Perth and Kinross, Sandwood in Sutherland and Knoydart. 150 years ago, who cared about the natural environment?
The 10 year old boy from Dunbar who became the founding father of world conservation.
Earliest known photograph of Dunbar Castle When I was a boy in Scotland I was fond of everything that was wild ... I loved to wander in the fields to hear the birds sing, and along the shore to gaze and wonder at the shells and the seaweeds, eels and crabs in the pools when the tide was low; and best of all to watch the waves in awful storms thundering on the black headlands and craggy ruins of old Dunbar Castle. John Muir 1838 - 1914 Statue depicting
John Muir as a boy John Muir was born in Dunbar on April 21st 1838. As a child he developed a deep love of the natural world around his home. In 1849 the Muir family emigrated to the United States, and began the hard work of making a farm. Self-taught, John won a place at university and began to explore the wilderness areas of America. Through his writing and the force of his personality he won support for his ideas of conserving wild places for their own sake. He helped found the Sierra Club in 1892 to campaign for the preservation of natural environments. His legacy lives on in the National Parks of the world and in the greater awareness of the importance of wild places.
