The power of imagination makes us infinite. "When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world." "Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike." "The mountains are fountains of men as well as of rivers, of glaciers, of fertile soil. The great poets, philosophers, prophets, able men whose thought and deeds have moved the world, have come down from the mountains."

In California, he worked as a naturalist and a writer, and became famous in both the political and scientific communities for his passionate essays on nature. He was an absorbing and fascinating talker, a self-described "poetico-trampo-geologist- botanist and ornith-natural etc." In 1892, he founded the Sierra Club, and gave over the labors of his life to the protection of wilderness. Muir had traveled to Alaska on extended expeditions in 1879-1880 and in 1890. He was a recognized authority on glaciers there; in Glacier Bay, one of the largest glaciers was already named for him. It was this expertise in glaciology, along with his broad background in nature study, that prompted Harriman to invite him to join the expedition. As well as being a knowledgeable naturalist, Muir was a legendary story-teller. He proved congenial company, although he was known to tease Burroughs a little too often. He collected botanical samples with the others, but would not shoot animals. All the specimen collecting, in fact distressed him. "Alaska's dwindling resources and wildlife could not afford many more such attacks in the name of science," he wrote.

"Our generation owes much to John Muir."
Theodore Roosevelt Born in the coastal town of Dunbar, Scotland, John Muir's family moved to the United States when he was a boy of eleven. Muir would develop such a deep love for that country's wilderness that he would become "Father of the American Natural Parks," and one of the most famous and influential naturalists worldwide. As a young boy, Muir worked alongside his father and brother on the family farm in Wisconsin. During the brief breaks allowed him by his strict and religious father, Muir would explore the surrounding countryside and work on his inventions. The contraptions he created out of hickory wood caught the attention of the state university, and the self-educated young man earned a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. After three years at university, Muir went traveling and worked at odd-jobs for a while, until an accident in a carriage shop where he was working threatened to blind him. Muir regained his sight, but the injury proved to be a turning point for him. He began to pursue his interest in naturalism, beginning with a 1000 mile walk from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico. Muir traveled to Cuba and Panama, ending up in California in 1868. Here, he worked as a shepherd for a while, but soon began exploring the Yosemite Valley and Sierras. It may not have been apparent at the time, but Muir had found the cause that would make him famous.

Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Muir, John (1838-1914), American naturalist, explorer, and writer. He was an influential conservationist, who worked to preserve wilderness areas and wildlife from commercial exploitation and destruction. His efforts helped to establish Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park , both in California. Many natural sites have been named in his honor, including Muir Woods National Monument , a virgin stand of redwoods, near San Francisco, California. Muir was born in Scotland in 1838. His family immigrated to the United States when he was 11 years old and settled on a farm near Portage, Wisconsin. Muir attended the University of Wisconsin from 1860 to 1863 but did not graduate. When he left college, he took extensive walking trips to study nature, especially plants. In 1867 he made a walking trip from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico to observe the plants, animals, and physical features of the country. During this trip Muir kept extensive journals, which were published after his death as A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf

My First Summer in the Sierra By the end of the first eighty-five pages of My First Summer in the Sierra , we know what is important and endearing about John Muir. It is not his bravado (though his courage and energy puts almost all of us to shame), but his acts of surrender. He came into the mountains light as a banty rooster, and with what might be called an empty mind. He was a clean slate on which each detail of Sierran beauty (which, I know from my own wanderings there, is limitless) was cleanly etched. He could only absorb and absorb, and the capaciousness of his spirit was such that it knew no surfeit. The conversion he spoke of was not to My First Summer in the Sierra The Atlantic Monthly My First Summer in the Sierra My First Summer in the Sierra Gretel Ehrlich THE PENGUIN NATURE LIBRARY General Editor: Edward Hoagland MY FIRST SUMMER IN THE SIERRA John Muir (1838-1914) was born in Scotland. My First Summer in the Sierra — by John Muir (18381914). Chapter VII. — A StrangeExperience. August 2. Clouds and showers, about the same as yesterday.
    http://www.mountain-portal.co.uk/text/sierra/Sierr07.htm
August August In front of the gloomy hotel I found a tourist party adjusting their fishing tackle. They all stared at me in silent wonderment, as if X had been seen dropping down through the trees from the clouds, mostly, I suppose, on account of my strange garb. Inquiring for the office, I was told it was locked, and that the landlord was away, but I might find the landlady, Mrs. Hutchings, in the parlor. I entered in a sad state of embarrassment, and after I had waited in the big, empty room and knocked at several doors the landlady at length appeared, and in reply to my question said she rather thought Professor Butler was you you August Before parting with Professor Butler he gave me a book, and I gave him one of my pencil sketches for his little son Henry, who is a favorite of mine. He used to make many visits to my room when I was a student. Never shall I forget his patriotic speeches for the Union, mounted on a tall stool, when he was only six years old. It seems strange that visitors to Yosemite should be so little influenced by its novel grandeur, as if their eyes were bandaged and their ears stopped. Most of those I saw yesterday were looking down as if wholly unconscious of anything going on about them, while the sublime rocks were trembling with the tones of the mighty chanting congregation of waters gathered from all the mountains round about, making music that might draw angels out of heaven. Yet respectable-looking, even wise-looking people were fixing bits of worms on bent pieces of wire to catch trout. Sport they called it. Should church-goers try to pass the time fishing in baptismal fonts while dull sermons were being preached, the so-called sport might not be so bad; but to play in the Yosemite temple, seeking pleasure in the pain of fishes struggling for their lives, while God himself is preaching his sublimest water and stone sermons!
