The Dancing Partner by Jerome K Jerome "This story," commenced MacShaugnassy, "comes from Furtwangen, a small town
in the Black Forest. There lived there a very wonderful old fellow named
Nicholaus Geibel. His business was the making of mechanical toys, at which
work he had acquired an almost European reputation. He made rabbits that
would emerge from the heart of a cabbage, flop their ears, smooth their
whiskers, and disappear again; cats that would wash their faces, and mew so
naturally that dogs would mistake them for real cats and fly at them; dolls
with phonographs concealed within them, that would raise their hats and say,
'Good morning; how do you do?' and some that would even sing a song.
"But, he was something more than a mere mechanic; he was an artist. His work
was with him a hobby, almost a passion. His shop was filled with all manner of strange things that never would, or could, be sold things he had made for the pure love of making them. He had contrived a mechanical donkey that would trot for two hours by means of stored electricity, and trot, too, much

66. Lady Byron Vindicated: Part One By Harriet Beecher Stowe
Among her letters to Mrs. Prof. Follen of Cambridge was one addressed to a society of Lady Byron s letters to Mrs. Follen were asked for from Boston;
http://englishhistory.net/byron/stowebyronone.html
LADY BYRON VINDICATED. Part One. Chapter I. Introduction. The interval since my publication of "The True Story of Lady Byron's Life" has been one of stormy discussion and of much invective. I have not thought it necessary to disturb my spirit and confuse my sense of right by even an attempt at reading the many abusive articles that both here and in England have followed that disclosure. Friends have undertaken the task for me, giving me from time to time the substance of anything really worthy of attention which came to view in the tumult. It appeared to me essential that this first excitement should in a measure spend itself before there would be a possibility of speaking to any purpose. Now, when all would seem to have spoken who can speak, and, it is to be hoped, have said the utmost they can say, there seems a propriety in listening calmly, if that be possible, to what I have to say in reply. And, first, why have I made this disclosure at all? To this I answer briefly, because I considered it my duty to make it.

TRAVELLERS' STORIES
BY MRS.
FOLLEN It is the pleasant twilight hour, and Frank and Harry Chilton are in their accustomed seat by their mother's side in the old sofa, that same comfortable old sofa, which might have listened to many pleasant and interesting stories that will never be told. Mother, said Frank, you have often promised us that some time you would tell us about your travels in Europe. This is a good stormy evening, and no one will come in to interrupt you; so please, dear Mother, tell us all you can remember. It is now, boys, five years since my return from Europe. Much that I did and saw while there I forget. However, as I have been lately looking over my hasty journal, I will see what I can remember. On the first of August I set sail in the steamer Caledonia for England. At four o'clock in the afternoon, we were out of sight of land; one by one, we had taken leave of every object which could be seen from the departing vessel; and now nothing was visible to us but the sky, the ocean meeting it in its wide, unbroken circle the sun gradually sinking in the west, and our small but only house, the ship. How strange, how sublime the scene was! so lonely, so magnificent, so solemn! At last the sun set, gilding the clouds, and looking, to my tearful eyes, as if that too said farewell! Then the moon appeared; and the long, indefinite line of light from where her rays first touched the waters to our ship, and the dancing of the waves as they crossed it, catching the light as they passed, were so beautiful that I was unwilling to leave the deck when the hour for rest arrived.

Adams contends that some material is taken from his manuscript, in the first letter, he claims he cannot check on the matter because he has just moved and his books "are all in a heap...if I have left it among my pamphlets at my house, it will be a hopeless task to attempt to find it." By the second letter, he has found it, and notes that his work is cited. Both letters are neat and readable; very good-near fine. $150.00

Paddle-to-the-Sea
This book is called something like "down to the Sea," I think. The story is about a young Indian man who paddles his canoe down the river to the sea. I think it was set in Canada, or the Pacific Northwest. I read this book in about 1945. It has beautiful, full-color illustrations.
Sounds like the classic Paddle-to-the-Sea. .. Early editions can be quite collectible now.
D115 [Note the canoe and its passenger are little models, not real people, but reader could have remembered the real boy.]
Holling, Holling Clancy, Paddle-to-the-sea. illus by Holling Clancy Holling. c.1941. Native American boy makes a beautiful model of an Indian in a canoe and places it in a snowbank which will melt and flow into the lakes and rivers going to the Atlantic from south central Canada; Caldecott Honor award for its beautiful full-page illustrations.
