Home Page Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Life The youngest child and only surviving son of the Austrian composer Leopold Mozart , Wolfgang Amadeus received his early musical training from his father. His musical talent was evident from infancy and he is now regarded as one of the greatest musical geniuses. When Wolfgang he was six years old, he and his gifted elder sister, Nannerl, were taken by their father, on the first of a long series of concert tours, to all the royal courts of Europe where they delighted audiences with virtuosic performances on the harpsichord. The following period proved disappointing to both father and son. As the young Mozart grew to manhood his popularity waned and he had difficulty finding employment, but the sense of his own worth carried him past the danger point. He was eventually given a position as court and cathedral organist in the household of the Archbishop of Salzburg. Early in 1781 he had a commissioned opera, "Idomeneo", staged in Munich for the Elector of Bavaria. Its success induced him to go to Vienna where, for a while, he found moderate favour with the nobility.

In his own words...

"People make a mistake who think that my art has come easily to me. Nobody has devoted so much time and thought to composition as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not studied over and over." Austrian composer. One of the leading composers of the Classical era, and a master in all genres.
Our picture of Mozart depends upon where we focus. Was he a brilliant, successful composer or a child prodigy who never grew up? Was he a facile composer who created nothing original or a composer of great emotional depth? He was all of these and more. For many of us, our focus is guided by our exposure to Mozart's personality in the film Amadeus , but is that an accurate picture?
Mozart's life remains a complicated puzzle. As a child, he seemed gifted beyond all measure, playing at age six before the empress, and composing at an even earlier age. By twelve he had written an opera, and his talents seemed to know no bounds. From this auspicious beginning, one would have predicted a future filled with prestigious royal appointments, the brilliant composer and performer constantly sought out by emperors and kings. But his career, which ended tragically with his death at age thirty-five, was a constant disappointment. When once asked about a meager court appointment he held, Mozart replied: "I get paid far too much for what I do, and far too little for what I could do." His music did not always please those in power: "Too many notes," Emperor Joseph II was reported to have said. And Mozart himself, who always felt that his talents were never adequately recognized, was often difficult.

Background

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (baptized Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus) was born in Salzburg in 1756, the second survivor out of six children. His father Leopold, an accomplished musician and composer, was Kapellmeister to Prince Archbishop Siegmund Christoph von Schrattenbach of Salzburg. The young Mozart showed astonishing musical precocity, playing the keyboard at three and composing at four. His elder sister Maria Anna was also a fine keyboard player, and in 1762 Leopold decided to display their skills to the European courts. They visited Munich and Vienna in 1762, and in 1763 embarked on a triumphant tour of Europe, performing in the palaces of the aristocracy.
In 1764, the Mozarts arrived in London, where Wolfgang studied composition with Johann Christian Bach and singing with the castrato Manzuoli. J.C. Bach's symphonies had a strong influence on the young Mozart, who wrote his first three symphonies in London. The Mozart family returned to Salzburg in 1766, after visits to Holland, France, and Italy.

Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg Austria. Mozart is considered one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, authoring over 600 works before his premature death at 35.
Mozart, the son of orchestra leader Leopold Mozart, showed remarkable musical aptitude early in life. He was playing the harpsichord by the age of 4, composing music at 5, and performed his first recital at age 6 for the Empress of Austria. Recognizing his enormous talent, his father devoted most of his time to his son's musical education, and taking him on concert tours throughout Europe.
Mozart left Salzburg in 1781 to seek his fortune in Vienna. He married there in 1782. Mozart made his living performing and selling his compositions and giving music lessons. No longer a child prodigy he had difficulty earning sufficient income to support a family. He died in poverty in 1791.
Mozart excelled at nearly every kind of musical composition. He wrote 22 operas, over 40 symphonies, and composed a great amount of church and chamber music. Much of Mozart's work is still performed and enjoyed today.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Mozart was born in Salzburg (where his house can still be viewed today, not too far from some of the locations used in The Sound of Music!). His father Leopold was himself a musician and composer who taught the young Mozart at a very early age. So successful was this that Mozart was able to play the piano at the age of 4 and he was composing his own works from the age of 5. When he was 6, while learning the violin, his father took Mozart and his elder sister (Maria Anna, also a young pianist) on a tour of Europe lasting 4 years to exhibit their talents to a wide audience. The gifted pair were presented to and celebrated by the Nobility and Royalty of several countries, meeting Louis XY of France, Georges III of England and also Marie Antoinette who was also of a similar age. Wolfgang Amadeus was even decorated by the Pope. Hence Mozart was immersed in music throughout his formative years. To demonstrate the skills of the young Mozart as a composer, we include here two of his early works composed around 1762 at the ages of 5 or 6. These works were originally catalogued by Ludwig von Kochel in 1862, giving them their "K" numbers which were intended to be chronological. We now know more about the dates of composition so that K.2 was actually composed before K.1 and there were a few works written between them.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) Probably the greatest genius in Western musical history, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria, Jan. 27, 1756, the son of Leopold Mozart and his wife, Anna Maria Pertl. Leopold was a successful composer, violinist and assistant concertmaster at the Salzburg court. Wolfgang began composing minuets at the age of 5 and symphonies at 9. When he was 6, he and his older sister, Maria Anna (who was nicknamed "Nannerl"), performed a series of concerts to Europe's courts and major cities. Both children played the keyboard, but Wolfgang became a violin virtuoso as well. In 1762 the Mozart children played at court in Vienna; the Empress Maria Theresa and her husband, Emperor Francis I, received them. From 1763 - 66, the Mozart children displayed their talents to audiences in Germany, Paris, at court in Versailles, and London (where Wolfgang wrote his first symphonies and began a friendship with Johann Christian Bach, whose became a great musical influence on Wolfgang). In Paris, the young Mozart published his first works, four sonatas for clavier with accompanying violin (1764). In 1768 he composed his first opera, La Finta Semplice, which had its premiere in Salzburg. In 1769-70, Leopold and Wolfgang undertook a tour through Italy. This first Italian trip culminated in a new opera, Mitridate, re di Ponto, composed for Milan. In two further Italian journeys he wrote two more operas for Milan, Ascanio in Alba (1771) and Lucio Silla (1772).
