Description:
These volumes bring to a close the only comprehensive edition of the surviving correspondence of William Morris (1834-1896), a protean figure who exerted a major influence as poet, craftsman, master printer, and designer. Volumes III and IV, taken together, give in detail the comments and observations that articulate his problematic political and artistic stands and equally problematic position within the aesthetic movement as it developed in the 1890s.

William Morris of United Kingdom
Born: Walthamstow, 1834
Died: Hammersmith, London, 1896 Late nineteenth century English architect, designer and typographer, leader of that revival of medieval form, the Arts and Crafts Movement, and — like Eric Gill — a socialist-craftsman. In 1891 he set up his Kelmscott Press, with the aim of “producing some [books] which would have a definite aim of beauty, while they should be easy to read and not dazzle the eye.” Referring to books of the fifteenth century, he noted: “they were always beautiful by force of mere typography, even without added ornament, with which many of them are lavishly supplied.” Morris’s books certainly supply the ornament lavishly. Today Kelmscott editions are among the most sought after by collectors.

WILLIAM MORRIS (1834-96):
A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
By Nicholas Salmon
William Morris was born in Walthamstow, Essex, on 24 March 1834. The son of a wealthy businessman, he enjoyed a comfortable childhood before going to Marlborough and Exeter College, Oxford. He originally intended to take holy orders, but his reading of the social criticism of Carlyle, Kingsley and Ruskin led him to reconsider the Church and devote his life to art. After leaving Oxford, Morris was briefly articled to G. E. Street, the Gothic Revival architect, but he soon left, having determined to become a painter. His admiration for the Pre-Raphaelites led him to be introduced to Dante Gabriel Rossetti whose influence can be seen on Morris's only surviving painting La Belle Iseult
Arts and Crafts
In the 1860s Morris decided that his creative future lay in the field of the decorative arts. His career as a designer began when he decorated the Red House, Bexleyheath, which had been built for him by Philip Webb. The success of this venture led to the formation of Among his many other works were Icelandic and classical translations

(William Morris) William Morris, one of the most brilliant and innovative progenitors of modern graphic design, was born at Elm House, the family estate, one of nine children. Despite the "boorish" Welsh blood, the family had done quite well for themselves. (It's interesting to note that also in 1834, popular classical composer Berlioz wrote "Childe Harold," based on Byron's poems.) Growing up, Morris loved the romantic chivalry and simplicity of anything medieval (later he said he felt he'd been born out of his time). He read Walter Scott; his parents even got him a pony so he could play knight. He was happy and even spoiled, though quite temperamental. Much later his daughter Jenny was diagnosed with epilepsy, and he often wondered if some of his 'rages' weren't epilepsy (or Tourettes) related. He was particularly close to a sister, Emma, at least until she got married. Later, he wrote poetry inspired by Chaucer, Tennyson, Keats and Browning. His romantic attachment to the natural world was already forming and evolving. His textiles furniture, wall paper and fabric designs were to become the epitome of 'the organic,' which was so much a part of his perception of reality. While religiously agnostic, the physical world was forever jolting him by its sheer majesty, giving him what we would now call an almost spiritual 'global sense.'

On this day in 1381, preacher John Ball spoke at Blackheath to those assembled for the Peasants' Revolt, inciting them with perhaps the most provocative rhymed couplet in history: "When Adam delved and Eve span, / Who was then the gentleman?" The rebels apparently took up this chant as they marched to London to demand a life of more than digging and spinning from fourteen-year-old Richard II. Being William Morris

His first contact with the working class and first political activity came through his involvement in the struggle to stop Disraeli's Tory government going to war with Russia between 1876 and 1878. In 1883 Morris joined the Democratic Federation (soon to be renamed the Social Democratic Federation (S.D.F.)). In December 1884, with the support of Engels, Morris and 8 out of the 10 members of the Executive of the S.D.F. resigned and set up the Socialist League. The Socialist League was split with Parliamentarians on one side and anarchists on the other

http://www.artlex.com/delahunt/Morris.html
A Morris Chair Story
My mother, Suzanne Manierre Delahunt, purchased a chair as a gift for me in 1996. She'd recognized it as a "Morris chair" a style first devised by the firm of the great English designer, William Morris. Her father, George Manierre IV, had had a Morris chair in his rooms at Harvard College in the 1890s, and it had been his favorite chair. My chair is made of solid oak with a reclinable back adjustible to four angles: a bar placed into one of four pairs of metal notches behind the rear legs. Its hinged back has back-contouring curves, and seven horizontal cross-pieces. Altogether, it's 42 x 30 x 33 inches when upright, 36 x 30 x 45 fully reclined. Here's what it looked like at the estate auction from which it was sold in 1996, in excellent condition despite its modern coat of green paint, both with cushions and without them. While many Morris Chairs have been manufactured, and continue to be popular, the vast majority are in the Stickley or Mission style. Two aspects of my chair make it a rather eccentric variant. First, there are some carved/impressed arabesques on the outer sides of the front legs, with an animal paw form given to their feet; and second, the six turned spindles supporting the middle of each arm rest are
