William Morris (1834-1896)
William Morris was born in Walthamstow, Essex. The son of a wealthy businessman, he enjoyed a comfortable childhood before going to Marlborough and Exeter College, Oxford.He originally intended to take holy orders, but his reading of the social criticism of Carlyle, Kingsley and Ruskin led him to reconsider the Church and devote his life to art.After leaving Oxford, Morris was briefly articled to G. E. Street, the Gothic Revival architect, but he soon left, having determined to become a painter. His admiration for the Pre-Raphaelites led him to be introduced to Dante Gabriel Rossetti whose influence can be seen on Morris's only surviving painting La Belle Iseult
Morris was well-known in his own time for his literature. His first volume of poetry The Defence of Guenevere received a mixed reception, but his reputation as a poet was established with the publication of The Earthly Paradise (1868-70).Among his many other works were Icelandic and classical translations

By William Morris

Love is enough: though the World be a-waning,
And the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining,
Though the sky be too dark for dim eyes to discover
The gold-cups and daisies fair blooming thereunder, Though the hills be held shadows, and the sea a dark wonder, And this day draw a veil over all deeds pass'd over, Yet their hands shall not tremble, their feet shall not falter; The void shall not weary, the fear shall not alter These lips and these eyes of the loved and the lover. William Morris (1834-1896) was born in Walthamstow, Essex, England. The son of a wealthy businessman he enjoyed a comfortable childhood before going on to University at Oxford. After leaving Oxford he decided that his future lay in the decorative arts, where he is best known for his fabric and wallpaper designs. He was also a political activist and a committed socialist. Throughout his life Morris was a voracious writer, and well known for his poetry. In 1890 he founded the Kelmscott Press (named after his last home in Hammersmith); where he designed his own typefaces, and printed high quality editions of classic works.

The Wood Beyond the World
Author Info: William Morris
The book you hold in your hands is the first great fantasy novel ever written: the first of them all;
all the others. Dunsany, Eddison, Pratt, Tolkein, Peake, Howard, et al. , are successors to this great
original. By fantasy , I mean the tale of quest, adventure or war set in an invented age and worldscape of the
author's own imagination.
-Lin Carter (Introduction to The Wood Beyond the World I like the definition of fantasy that Carter provides there and William Morris is certainly an early practitioner of the genre, but I think you've got to give pride of place to George MacDonald [see Orrin's review of The Princess and the Goblin George MacDonald (Grade: A) At any rate, William Morris is one of the more interesting and influential characters of Victorian England. Repelled by the changes that the Industrial Revolution had brought to Britain, he yearned for more pastoral times. By profession a Medievalist, he translated Norse sagas and printed them in beautiful editions. An artist and founder of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, he designed many of the flowery tapestries and wallpapers that we associate with the Victorian drawing room. Politically he was a utopian Socialist. And, as Carter says, as a writer he helped to create the fantasy novel. In all of these pursuits he harkened back to an idealized past, no where more so than in his writing.

MORRIS, WILLIAM tion gave offence, and in return for the recall of Genet, at the request of the United States, the French government, in 1794, asked for the recall of Morris. Business and pleasure, however, still detained him in Europe for four years longer. He returned to New York in 1798, resumed the practice of his profession, re-entered politics, and sat in the United States Senate as a Federalist from 1800 to 1803. As early as 1 80I Morris became interested in projects for improving the communication between the Hudson river and Lake Erie, and from i8xo to I8I6 he was chairman of the board of canal commissioners, which after exploring the country prepared plans for the Erie Canal. He was bitterly opposed to the war of 1812, and openly advocated the formation of a northern confederacy to escape the rule of the Virginia dynasty. He died at Morrisania on the 6th of November 1816. William Morris
William Morris was known to be energetic, versatile, and industrious for he accomplished many projects throughout his career. He was a popular and prolific Victorian poet and translator of Northern mythology. As an artist-craftsman he invented and revived lost techniques for printing, and for creating textiles, embroidery and stained glass. By opening his own textile factory, he became a successful entrepreneur in the decorating and manufacturing business. During the last two decades of his life he became an ardent Socialist, giving hundreds of lectures on the topic throughout Britain. Despite various ventures, Morris had a lasting enthusiasm for medievalism and Arthuriana.
Morris's interest in the Arthurian legends first became apparent while he was a student at Oxford, from 1853-1855. At this time Arthuriana had been popularized by Tennyson and Southey's edition of Malory's Morte d'Arthur . One of Morris's favorite poems to read aloud dramatically to Edward Burne-Jones was Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott."
