The 20th Air Force's five wings were divided into 20 Bomb Groups. This is the history of one of those Groups. The 39th - stationed on Guam, the southernmost island in the Marianas. The combat missions they flew against Japan ultimately brought them two prestigious Distinguished Unit Citations . Lesser known, however, are the individual stories - some joyous, some tragic - stored in the memory of each crewman. Then, too, there are those on the ground that serviced the big bombers, and many others whos duties it was to provide innumerable vital needs that readied both the men and planes to for the next mission. All these components provided by men of unflinching patriotism, dedication and courage, commendably performed the tasks they were called upon to do. Together they contributed in great measure to the victory Some of these personal stories that have remained in obsecurity for over 55 years are finally revealed in this gripping and overdue history ...

MIT Reports to the President 1997-98
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
Undergraduate enrollment in computer science has grown dramatically in the past few years. Traditionally one third of the EECS undergraduates majored in computer science, and two thirds in electrical engineering. Recently the statistics have shown that more favor CS. However, th emost interesting trend is that now more than half the students elect to pursue a new undergraduate program which retains greater breadth at the junior level, and does not require the student to designate either EE or CS. These trends are expected to continue. The Department must be prepared to shift the balance of its faculty to more closely approximate student interest. We will find this easier than many other universities where EE and CS are in different departments. Overall enrollment in EECS continues to be high, and the students continue to be extraordinarily well qualified academically. For the past two decades our computer science faculty and graduate students have had their offices and laboratories in a building that is off campus. This geographical barrier has tended to impede collaboration between CS faculty and those on campus, and has worked against the notion that the fields of EE and CS are really closely related and, indeed, can best be thought of as a single discipline. We are currently raising the money necessary to erect a new complex of buildings on campus, adjacent to one of the laboratories housing many EECS faculty. The computer-science laboratories currently off campus (the Laboratory for Computer Science and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory) will move into this complex, along with the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems. Construction is planned to begin in 1998.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE
The past year, like most years, was a busy one for EECS faculty, staff, and students. A number of exciting new faculty members, including three women, joined the department and we launched a number of new educational and research initiatives. Despite the high overall enrollment, our undergraduate electrical engineering program continues to be considerably smaller than it has historically been. The drop in interest in pure electrical engineering is a nation wide trend. Interestingly, however, our largest undergraduate program is not our computer science program (as at many other universities) but instead our program that combines electrical engineering and computer science. This can be viewed as an affirmation of the value of a broad-based education that encompasses both electrical engineering and computer science. The doctoral program too is healthy. Its size has remained almost constant, though we plan to grow slightly over the next few years. We continue to be extremely selective in our admissions process, especially in Areas I and II. In September we made a number of significant changes to our doctoral programs. These included a more flexible qualification process and a teaching requirement. Under the leadership of Associate Department Head Rafael Reif, we have greatly increased our interactions with industry. Most notably, we launched our Industrial Connections Program (ICP). This program provides a formal mechanism for interaction between member companies and EECS students. The goal is to facilitate efficient communication between the EECS student community and the business world. Membership in the ICP is open to companies with a strong commitment to electrical engineering and computing.

Creationist Cultists: By their own words
By their own words: "No theologian could ever be a historian. The historian has only one concern: truth, whereas the theologian has something else at stake: his dogma." Joseph Ernest Renan (1823-1897) By their own words shall you know them. Gems from the Creationist slagpile: "If one is willing to make adjustments in the historical claims of the Bible, they can be correlated with the archaeological evidence, if one is willing to take some liberties with the archaeological evidence." - J. Maxwell Miller "It is precisely because Biblical revelation is absolutely authoritative and perspicuous that the scientific facts, rightly interpreted, will give the same testimony as that of Scripture. There is not the slightest possibility that the *facts* of science can contradict the Bible." -Dr. Hank Morris in first paragraph of "Scientists Confront Creationism" edited by Laurie R. Godfrey "There is no observational fact imaginable which cannot, one way or another, be made to fit the creation model." - Henry Morris -President, Institute for Creation Research "It is precisely because Biblical revelation is absolutely authoritative and perspicuous that the scientific facts, rightly interpreted, will give the same testimony as that of Scripture. There is not the slightest possibility that the *facts* of science can contradict the Bible." - Henry Morris in first paragraph of "Scientists Confront Creationism" edited by Laurie R. Godfrey
