COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA
In 1901 the British selfgoverning colonies in Australia - New South Wales Queensland South Australia Tasmania ... Victoria and Western Australia - were united into a new federal selfgoverning colony, named Australia. In the course of the following years the new colony gradually evolved towards a semi-independent state and in 1907 the style of colony - which now no longer reflected the actual statute of the territory - was dropped and replaced by that of Dominion . Following the Imperial Conference of 1926 Australia became one of the equal members of the British Empire and in 1931, with the Statute of Westminster, it finally achieved full sovereignty, while remaining a member of the British Commonwealth. As a result of an Australasian Inter-Colonial Conference held in 1883 by delegates of the six Australian colonies, Fiji and New Zealand a a Federal Council of Australasia was established in 1885 to consider common problems such as defence, non-British expansion in the region, Chinese migration, etc. As not all colonies participated, the Council never had much power and actually was a mainly consultative body. It disappeared in 1899. Members of the Federal Council of Australasia 1886 - 1899 : Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia 1886 - 1888 : Fiji 1889 - 1891 : South Australia

MULLER, HERBERT, MSS.
The Muller, Herbert, mss., 1913-1976, consist of the correspondence, writings and lecture notes of Herbert Joseph Muller, 1905-1980, distinguished professor literature and government at Indiana University, Bloomington. Muller received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1925 and stayed on to complete the Ph.D. degree in 1932. He joined the English Department faculty at Purdue University in 1935, then moved to Indiana University in 1956 where he remained until retirement. The writings in the collection are arranged alphabetically by title of publication. The materials for any given title will often include research notes for the book, photographs used for illustrations, galleys or page proofs where available, and copies of reviews following publication. Memorabilia for conferences, symposia and awards and honors follow the writings and include a scrapbook and diplomas from Cornell University. Class materials relating to courses given by Muller at both Purdue and Indiana University complete the collection. There is a box and folder list of the collection contents in the Vertical File.

EASTMAN MSS.
The Eastman mss., 1892-1968, consist of the correspondence and writings of Max Forrester Eastman, 1883-1969, author. The earliest pieces include a few family letters from his mother, Annis Bertha (Ford) Eastman, (Mrs. Samuel Elijah Eastman), 1852-1910, minister, and his sister, Crystal Eastman, 1881-1928, lawyer. With the biographical materials is the Dutch painting that Eastman's mother brought to him from Europe. Other related family correspondence may be found in the Anstice Ford Eastman mss., of his brother, 1878- 1937?, physician. Letters from friends and neighbors of Elmira and Glenora, New York, and from his classmates and acquaintances at Mercersburg Academy and Williams College also belong to the correspondence of the early period of Eastman's life. Completing his work for a Ph.D. degree at Columbia and encouraged by John Dewey, he taught logic for three years at the University. In 1909 Eastman organized the Men's League for Woman's Suffrage. His marriage to Ida Rauh, actress and poet, occurred in 1911 and produced comment when it was learned Miss Rauh would retain her maiden name. Their son Daniel was born in 1912. A year later Eastman's first books, Enjoyment of Poetry and Child of the Amazons, were published. During this time he became editor of The Masses with its new idea in format and inclination toward then-radical causes and worked with it until its close in October, 1917. The next year with his sister Crystal Eastman as co-owner he started a new periodical with similar interests called The Liberator.
