HOME HISTORY EFFECT TOUR ... BIBLIOGRAPHY
The What, Why, and How of the 1988 Internet Worm
There may be a virus loose on the internet. Andy Sudduth of Harvard, 34 minutes after midnight, Nov. 3, 1988 The above may be the computer understatement of the year. As of the time that Sudduth posted his message, the internet was coming apart. VAX and Sun machines across the country were being overloaded by invisible tasks, preventing users from being able to use the machines effectively, if at all, and eventually forcing system administrators to cut off many of their machines from the internet entirely in an attempt to cut off the source of infection. The culprit of all this chaos is a small (99 line, not including object files) program written by Robert Tappan Morris who was, at the time, a 23 year old doctoral student at Cornell University. This code, or this type of code, has since been given then name, worm. There has been a great deal of discussion as to whether or not the name "worm" is appropriate. Many still refer to the program which paralyzed the internet in late 1988 as a virus. However, there is a major difference between the average viral program, and the program in question, and for this reason, we will use the term "worm" to describe programs of the type in question, capitalizing when describing the specific Internet Worm launched in November of 1988. A worm, on the other hand, is far more powerful. When a worm gains access to a computer (usually by breaking into it over the internet) it launches a program which searches for other internet locations, infecting them if it can. At no time does the worm need user assistance (accidental or not) in order to operate its programming. Moreover, the worm travels over the internet, so all machines attached to an infected machine are at risk of attack. Considering the connectivity of the internet on the whole, this includes a huge number computers whose only defense is the sealing of the security gaps which the worm uses to enter. Secondly, worms can spread with no assistance (as opposed to viruses which must literally be carried from one machine to another). Once the worm discovers an internet connection, all that it must do is download a copy of itself to that location, and continue running as normal.

Next Charles William Morris’s Writings on the General Theory of Signs Charles William Morris’s Writings on the General Theory of Signs (1971) is an investigation of the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic relations of linguistic and non-linguistic signs, and is an examination of the roles which various kinds of signs may play in influencing human behavior. Morris introduces a terminology with which to describe sign phenomena, and presents a theory of signs which defines signs as stimuli to patterns of behavior. Morris explains how ‘semiotic’ (the science of signs) may develop within the context of a science of behavior, and describes the role which semiotic may play in unifying biological, psychological, social, and humanistic sciences. Morris describes the role which a science of signs may play in analyzing language as a social system of signs, and explains that language may be governed by syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic rules. Syntactic rules may determine which combinations of signs may function as grammatical statements. Semantic rules may determine the conditions under which signs may be applicable to objects or to situations. Pragmatic rules may determine the conditions under which sign-vehicles may function as signs. Morris describes the role which semiotics may play in the development of a theory of language, and explains that language may be defined not only by the rules which govern the combinations of its signs, but by the rules which govern the signification of its signs, and by the rules which govern the origin, uses, and effects of its signs.

Comet Expert - Editor - Lecturer Charles has been an amateur astronomer for more than 30 years. Although technically an amateur, he is a recognized expert in visual comet photometry and comet light curves and has published scientific papers professionally. Growing up in the heat of the space race, his first exposure to the sky was taking "star trail" photos of the early Earth satellites. His interest in space migrated to an interest in astronomy in the mid-1960's. Charles made regular sunspot observations between 1967 and 1969 which formed the basis of two science fair projects, which won 2nd and 1st place in the Detroit Metropolitan Science Fair in 1968 and 1969, respectively. His interest switched to comets in 1970 when Comet Bennett, the Great Comet of 1970, made its apparition. Since then, Charles has observed nearly 250 comet apparitions visually, making photometric and other observations of these interesting objects. In 1984, he made a rare visual recovery of Periodic Comet Faye. A year later, he (along with Steve Edberg ) was the first to see Periodic Comet Halley with the naked eye.
