THE PIPE AND TABOR
An Address to a Society of Morris Dancers,
Oxford, February 12, 1914
by Sir Francis Darwin
(Son of Sir Charles Darwin)
In the following pages I have brought together some scattered information on the instruments, especially connected with Folk-Dancing, which give the title to my address. The coming to life of a mass of beautiful tunes and dances, in response to the patient search of Mr. Cecil Sharp and a few others, is one of the most magical occurrences of which I have any memory. In a lesser degree I have experienced the same sense of the unexpected, in learning that in a Kentish village, so near London as often to be darkened by the skirts of town fogs, the ancient superstition still existed of telling the bees that their master is dead. Such an unsuspected lurking of primitive belief in our midst may well give a shock of surprise. But in the resurrection of the mass of hidden music, and of the dying traditions, of dances, a web of extraordinary beauty is suddenly revealed-a matter of real importance. If tunes have souls they are shut out by death from ever again vibrating in a human tenement. They are like the

Bartlett, Wm. Henry (1809-54):
Bartlett, a travel book illustrator, came to Canada in 1838. There were many travel book illustrators that went about their business in the 19th century: Bartlett, however, was different, in that in addition to being an accomplished artist he "travelled to all the places he drew." His output was "prodigious" and most all of it ended up in the hands of the engravers. Canadian Scenery , is a very handsome two volume work brought in England in 1842; it is a very valuable set of books these days, containing 120 steel engravings of drawings done by Bartlett, a number of them are scenes in and about Nova Scotia, depicting it as it was, in 1838.
Bathurst, Henry, 3rd Earl of Bathurst
In 1812, Bathurst was appointed Secretary of State for War and Colonies; he remained in this position for the next fifteen years.

47. Historical Biographies, Nova Scotia: Charles Morris (1711-81).
Short historical biography on Charles Morris, a Bostonian surveyor who came to layout the newly founded English community of Halifax, in 1749,

Charles Morris
In the conclusion of the DCB write-up, we find: "Charles Morris was surveyor general of lands for the province for 32 years, a period which saw the founding of Halifax and Lunenburg and the coming of the pre-loyalists, when the colony's foundations were laid." To this I would add, that Charles Morris also played a very important part in the development of the province's justice system, occupying, as he did, a number of important positions on the bench. Charles Morris was born in Boston. His mother was a Rainstorpe. Charles was to marry into one of the high circles at Boston; his bride was Mary, the daughter of the Attorney General, John Read. Not much is known about his career up to the time Morris first came to Nova Scotia. Apparently he lived on his father's farm and taught school at Hopkinton, Massachusetts. At any rate, in 1746 he was to receive a commission from Governor Shirley . Morris was to raise a regiment and go to Nova Scotia. In 1746, there was a great deal of concern for the safety of Annapolis Royal, indeed of Boston itself, this, on account of a large French fleet, d'Anville's Armada , which was expected to arrive on the coast. By the time Morris arrived with his 100 New Englanders, the immediate threat had passed. He was ordered by
