The History of The Round House - Chitterne
Charles Morris Charles' Dubious Naval Career Charles Morris took over the lease of the Round House in 1815, when his brother, Joseph Brown Morris, the previous leaseholder, died. Charles lived there until his own death in 1879. His obituary in the Warminster Herald of 20th December 1879 tells us that he joined the Royal Navy in 1801, and served on board the Donegal, in the fleet under Nelson. He was present as a midshipman at the Battle of Trafalgar. However, this is unsubstantiated, as no record has yet been found of a Charles Morris at the Battle of Trafalgar, in fact on the contrary, there is evidence that he was dismissed from the service. Later, when he lived at the Round House he was a Colonial Agent and even later, a fundholder, a man of means. Elizabeth Morris and her sons Charles and Joseph Charles and Joseph, sons of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Morris, were baptised in Mere, Wiltshire on 22nd May 1786. Elizabeth's gravestone is set in the floor of St Mary's Chancel, Chitterne. It is written in latin and translates as: "Here lies Elizabeth Morris, wife of Jeremiah Morris, gentleman of Mere in this county, of 24 years. Daughter of C. Shurland, Senator of the Barbados Islands. Died December 21 AD 1812."

    28. Charles Morris
A brief biography of Charles Morris s writings on semiotics, pragmatics, etc.
    http://www.nd.edu/~ehalton/Morrisbio.htm
Charles Morris A Brief Outline of His Philosophy with relations to semiotics, pragmatics, and linguistics by Eugene Halton (c) 1992 C harles Morris (1901-1979) was a student of George Herbert Mead at the University of Chicago and later editor of the widely known collection of Mead's lectures, Mind, Self, and Society (1934). Morris helped to create "the Viennese connection" to American philosophy in the 1930s, hoping to clarify pragmatism by making use of the foundationalist, verification model of truth promised by the logical empiricism of Rudolph Carnap and others. M orris is most noted today for his monograph, Foundations of the Theory of Signs (1938), which was the first volume of the grand project for the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science . In this work he proposed his threefold divisions of a sign as consisting of sign vehicle, designatum, and interpreter, and of semiotics as consisting of syntactics, semantics, and pragmatics. This latter distinction became normalized in linguistics. These divisions were based on a dyadic, positivist reading of Charles Peirce's triadic semeiotic, an unacknowledged misreading of Peirce's critique of dyadic views of signs and of foundationalism. P M orris's chief publications also include the elaboration of his work in semiotics

    29. The Morris Internet Worm
Charles Schmidt and Tom Darby explain the what, why, and how of the 1988 Internet worm.
    http://www.snowplow.org/tom/worm/worm.html
HOME HISTORY EFFECT TOUR ... BIBLIOGRAPHY
The What, Why, and How of the 1988 Internet Worm
There may be a virus loose on the internet. Andy Sudduth of Harvard, 34 minutes after midnight, Nov. 3, 1988 The above may be the computer understatement of the year. As of the time that Sudduth posted his message, the internet was coming apart. VAX and Sun machines across the country were being overloaded by invisible tasks, preventing users from being able to use the machines effectively, if at all, and eventually forcing system administrators to cut off many of their machines from the internet entirely in an attempt to cut off the source of infection. The culprit of all this chaos is a small (99 line, not including object files) program written by Robert Tappan Morris who was, at the time, a 23 year old doctoral student at Cornell University. This code, or this type of code, has since been given then name, worm. There has been a great deal of discussion as to whether or not the name "worm" is appropriate. Many still refer to the program which paralyzed the internet in late 1988 as a virus. However, there is a major difference between the average viral program, and the program in question, and for this reason, we will use the term "worm" to describe programs of the type in question, capitalizing when describing the specific Internet Worm launched in November of 1988. A worm, on the other hand, is far more powerful. When a worm gains access to a computer (usually by breaking into it over the internet) it launches a program which searches for other internet locations, infecting them if it can. At no time does the worm need user assistance (accidental or not) in order to operate its programming. Moreover, the worm travels over the internet, so all machines attached to an infected machine are at risk of attack. Considering the connectivity of the internet on the whole, this includes a huge number computers whose only defense is the sealing of the security gaps which the worm uses to enter. Secondly, worms can spread with no assistance (as opposed to viruses which must literally be carried from one machine to another). Once the worm discovers an internet connection, all that it must do is download a copy of itself to that location, and continue running as normal.

Muenchen 1972. Original: Foundations of the Theory of Signs
