Morley, Christopher D. (1890 - 1957) Rhodes Scholar and author, Christopher Morley moved to his home "Green Escape" in Roslyn Estates in 1920. He later built a one room writing studio on this property, which he called "The Knothole." Well known as a columnist, poet and playwright, Morley produced some of his plays in Roslyn at the Millpond Playhouse. This building, built as the War Memorial Building, is today home of the Bryant Library. After his death in 1957, friends and neighbors joined together to save "The Knothole" and had it moved into the newly named Christopher Morley Park, where it still stands. Books, photographs, new clippings and articles by and about Morley are available in the Library's Local History Collection. Quotes of the Day for 5 May 2005 - Christopher Morley
Christopher Darlington Morley was born at Haverford, Pennsylvania on this day in 1890. He was valedictorian of the 1910 graduating class of Haverford College, then won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford. After moving to New York he not only wrote poetry and several popular novels but involved himself deeply in American literary life. He wrote a column for the New York Evening Post and edited a an insert which evolved into the Saturday Review of Books. In turn, this became the genesis of the Book of the Month Club. He helped Walt Whitman become "America's Poet", and edited two editions of Bartlett's. There is no squabbling so violent as that between people who accepted an idea yesterday and those who will accept the same idea tomorrow. There are three ingredients in the good life: learning, earning, and yearning. All cities are mad, but the madness is gallant. All cities are beautiful, but the beauty is grim. Dancing is wonderful training for girls; it's the first place you learn to guess what a man is going to do before he does it.

Love and friendship and humour and ships at sea by night - there's all heaven and earth in a book, a real book I mean. Jiminy! If I were the baker or the butcher or the broom huckster, people would run to the gate when I came by - just waiting for my stuff. And here I go loaded with everlasting salvation - yes, ma'am, salvation for their little, stunted minds - and it's hard to make 'em see it. That's what makes it worth while - I'm doing something that nobody else from Nazareth, Maine, to Walla Walla, Washington, has ever thought of. MORLEY MSS.
The Morley mss., 1917-1924 and 1958, consist of letters from author Christopher Darlington Morley, 1890-1957, to Sir Sidney Colvin, 1845-1927. The letters discuss Morley's activities and family, his changes in journalistic positions, and events in the United States relating to America's entry into World War I. The last letter, written in 1924 just after Morley had joined the Saturday Review, mentions his meeting and association with author Joseph Conrad, 1857-1924. One letter, written sometime about 1920, is addressed to writer Charles Lewis Hind, 1862-1927, rather than to Colvin. A mimeographed copy of a talk delivered by Morley's younger brother, Frank Vigor Morley, 1899-1980, at Haverford College in 1958, completes the collection. Biographical Sketch
Harry Sinclair Lewis was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota in 1885. His mother died shortly after he turned six, leaving his father to raise him and his two older brothers. A local doctor, the boy's father valued hard work above all other virtues and frequently chided Sinclair, who had decided at an early age that he wanted to be a writer, for "mooning around." Lewis entered Yale in 1903 and wrote for several school publications. He studied hard, but also sought adventure, spending one summer vacation sailing to Liverpool on a cattle boat. Graduating from Yale in 1908, Lewis took a job with an Iowa newspaper but after ten weeks moved to New York. A few months later he drifted west to San Francisco and a year later drifted back to New York, via Washington D.C. Once he discovered that he could support himself by writing short stories, he had time to hone his writing skills and work on his novels as well as travel. Between 1915 and 1930 he visited 40 states in America as well as Canada, Mexico, fourteen countries in Europe and three in South America. He met Grace Hegger in 1912, in New York, and married her two years later. Their son, Wells, was born in 1917. Strained by Lewis's inability to settle down, as well as his increasing fame, the marriage ended in 1928. Grace wrote about her life with Lewis in her 1931 novel
