Frank Morley was born into a Quaker family. His mother was Elizabeth Muskett, and his father was Joseph Roberts Morley. Joseph ran a china shop in Woodbridge. Frank attended Seckford Grammar School in Woodbridge before he entered King's College, Cambridge, in 1879, having won an open scholarship. An important influence on his school career was Airy who Frank had met through their shared passion for chess. It was Airy 's encouragement which saw Frank compete for the scholarship. However ill health disrupted Morley's undergraduate course and he was forced to take an extra year because of these health problems. Morley only achieved the eighth place in the First Class Honours. To say 'only' here may seem strange since this was an extremely good result in an examination which saw Mathews first and Whitehead fourth. Richmond writes in [4], however:-

    Background
Much of this collection concerns the life of Christopher Darlington Morley (1890-1957) who reached the pinnacle of his popularity as a writer in the 1930s and 1940s. Best known for his novel Kitty Foyle , he was, in fact, quintessentially versatile. Erudite and witty, he probed every literary genre and exhibited a style of substance and facility. Though he is perhaps best remembered as a novelist and literary columnist, he is also remembered as a dramatist, essayist, editor, especially in connection with the Book-of-the-Month Club, and anthologist of two editions of Bartlett's Quotations. Morley's poetry which he wrote in free verse and rhymed had a 17th century lilt to it. His Translations from the Chinese (1932) is considered some of his best poetry. Then again, his poetry was transduced into lyrics in collaboration with such song writers as Jerome Kern.

TO A POST-OFFICE INKWELL by: Christopher Morley (1890-1957)
OW many humble hearts have dipped
In you, and scrawled their manuscript!
Have shared their secrets, told their cares,
      Their curious and quaint affairs!
Your pool of ink, your scratchy pen,
Have moved the lives of unborn men,
And watched young people, breathing hard,
Put Heaven on a postal card.

HYMN TO THE DAIRYMAIDS ON BEACON STREET by: Christopher Morley (1890-1957)
      WEETLY solemn see them stand,
      Spinning churns on either hand,
      Neatly capped and aproned white
      Airy fairy dairy sight.
      Jersey priestesses they seem
      Miracling milk to cream.
      Cream solidifies to cheese
      By Pasteural mysteries,
And they give, within their shrine,
      Incantations pure they mutter
      O'er the golden minted butter
And (no layman hand can pen it)
See them gloat above their rennet.
      By that hillside window pane
      Rugged teamsters draw the rein.
Doff the battered hat and bow
      To these acolytes of cow.
      Genuflect, ye passersby!
      Muse upon their ritual high
Milk to cream, yea, cream to cheese
      White lacteal mysteries!
      Let adorers sing the word
      Of the smoothly flowing curd.
Yea, we sing with bells and fife
This is the whey, this is the Life.

Most adventurous of vermin, How I wish I could determine How you spend your hours of ease, Perhaps reclining on the cheese. Then the kitchen is your park: In the garbage heap that she leaves Do you browse among the tea leaves? How delightful to suspect All the places you have trekked: Does your long antenna whisk its Gentle tip across the biscuits? Do you linger, little soul, Drowsing in our sugar bowl? Or, abandonment most utter, Shake a shimmy on the butter? Do you chant your simple tunes Swimming in the baby's prunes?
