The Natural Human Environment "P erhaps catastrophe is the natural human environment. We find ourselves attacked by unforeseen forces come to harm us, even though we are innocent of any wrongdoing." With these ominous words, Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman) ends a speech he's been making for a room full of people in tuxedos and gowns. He's a well-known man-about-town, doing his bit to solicit relief funds for victims of Hurricane Lucy, which has just blown through Puerto Rico... but there's something else afoot. For all his philanthropic grandeur, Henry is "under suspicion." And at this particular moment, he's under he watchful eye of his old acquaintance and sometime friend, Police Captain Victor Benezet (Morgan Freeman). The camera angles are low, the sound of forks tinging glasses fades out, and while Victor's eyes hold fast on their target Henry pulls back, until he's out of focus and artfully spooky. Catastrophe, yes. We can feel it coming. Even though we are innocent of any wrongdoing. Under Suspicion is peppered with such overwrought moments. But such occasional melodrama hardly explains why the film's theatrical release schedule was so abruptly halted last year, after it had opened in only a few theaters, or why it has suddenly been relegated as of this past Tuesday (January 2) to what is essentially a straight-to-video status. Such a fate is usually reserved films made by unknowns, that never found distribution deals, or that feature girls in panties being chased by men in ski masks (though to be fair, this last also shows up in box office winners). Clearly

Attack of the Shit Weasels The scene in the bathroom may be the most fun sequence I've ever done, and also the most gory and grossest and creepiest.
One thing you can say about Dreamcatcher : you can't really say one thing about it. The film is a wild clutter of previous movie fragments ( Men In Black Alien John Carpenter's The Thing ) and generic hooks (including "Based on a Stephen King novel," which means it repeats his usual tropes, from childhood flashbacks to mysterious characters named Mr. Something, all seemingly worse here, tin the first book he wrote after his near-death rundown by a car). As such, it runs a zany gamut of images and scares and jokes, featuring an ensemble cast of gooey monsters and panicky men, a remote out-in-the-snowy-woods setting (underlined by a pat reference to Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening"), and a dizzying assortment of weapons. Too bad all these rampaging concepts don't come to a point, except, maybe, in the bathroom scene that so delights director Lawrence Kasdan. The setup comprises standard horror movie shenanigans: four childhood friends super-intuitive college professor Jonesy (Damian Lewis), suicidal shrink Henry (Thomas Jane), car salesman Pete (Timothy Olyphant) and big dope Beaver (Jason Lee) retreat from their workaday lives at a cabin in Maine, where they remember the good old days of 20 years ago. Yes indeed, that was when each was granted his own special telepathic gift, by pale and shivery little Duddits (Donnie Wahlberg), the cute, retarded, mind-reading kid they save from local bullies.

Jane Norton Page

Administration

Jane Norton Page's death on December 15, 1998, preceded that of her husband, Walter, by only 25 days. They had been together for 56 cherished years, having married just after Walter went on active duty as a naval officer in World War II. Jane's no-nonsense, yet always caring, manner complemented well that of her husband, whose tactful conversational openings often masked strong personal convictions. And when civic duty called, Jane and Walter could always be counted on to lead. Born in 1918, Jane, like Walter, was the product of an intelligent, landed family with roots early into our country's history. Her father's family, the Nichols, had lived in Massachusetts since the 17th century. A distant forebear, Susanna Martin, a Quaker widow, was in 1692 convicted of witchcraft and hanged on Gallows Hill in Salem. During the Revolutionary War, Ichabod Nichols, who had captained a ship to St. Petersburg and the court of Catherine II, was expelled from their Quaker meeting for privateering against British shipping. Late in the 19th century, Jane's grandfather, John White Treadwell Nichols (1852-1920), who owned a textile mill, moved to New York and bought lands bordering the road from Cold Spring Harbor to Syosset. This land continued to be farmed by his descendants until after World War II. Jane's father, George Nichols, carried on the family textile business. A prominent yachtsman, he maintained the family farming tradition at Uplands Farm, an estate off Lawrence Hill Road, where he and his family moved in 1924. Uplands Farm had been given to his wife by her father, the financier J.P. Morgan (1867-1943), whose Long Island estate was on Matinecock Point in Glen Cove. Morgan's summers were generally spent in England, to the north of London in Hertfordshire. There Jane Page, as a young girl, experienced the pleasures of the English country house life that New York's great wealth was trying to emulate, if not better, on Long Island's North Shore. In the summer of 1939, Morgan's chauffeur, in a casual conversation with a Lab scientist, gave assurances that war was not imminent because Mr. Morgan was still in England.

Biography:

Morgan Russell was born in New York and studied sculpture at the Art Students’ League. He also studied painting under Robert Henri. He moved to Paris in 1908 and studied at Matisse’s art school for a short time. After meeting Stanton Macdonald-Wright in 1911, the two began developing theories about color and its relationship to pattern. In 1913, they introduced one of the first avant-garde movements, Synchromism. Russell received acclaim for his Synchromy in Orange. Later in his career, Russell turned to figurative work that was less successful. He returned to the United States in 1946.

Adapted from a recent Stephen King tome about four physic friends on an annual winter retreat to a remote cabin who find themselves on the business end of an alien invasion, the film moves along under a reasonably eerie tenor, even as the men encounter a hunter lost in the snowy woods with what seems like a wicked case of indigestion.

This story originally appeared in the collection . You can buy that book from Amazon.com . You can buy this story, with others and with the second edition of The Lizard of Oz on a single diskette from Amazon.com It was summer vacation, and everything was different: Mary Jane didn't have to go to school, and everything she just loved turned into a car all the animals, that is. Mary Jane just loved all sorts of animals. She loved horses, cows, and birds. And she was very sad when they turned into Mustangs, Mavericks and Falcons. But Leroy was very happy. He followed Mary Jane all over town. Every time she saw a little pony and just loved it and it turned into a car, Leroy would jump in that car and drive it round and round. Soon Leroy and James and Ricky and Raymond and Michael and David and Penny and Frank and Julie and Desire were looking all over Brockton for horses and cows and birds to take to Mary Jane so she'd just love them and they'd turn into cars. Even Miss Morgan went looking for horses and cows and birds because she was tired of her little green VW. Everybody wanted a car of their own. Everybody wanted two cars, three cars, as many cars as they could get. Miss Morgan got ten cars, so many cars that she had no place to put them; so she stacked them in her front yard.
