MOORE
Of the many Moores who have distinguished themselves in various phases of Irish life the most famous was, perhaps, Thomas Moore (1779-1852), the poet: he was of a Co. Wexford family. The Moores of Moore Hall, Co. Mayo, produced George Henry Moore (18101870), the politician, and his two sons George Moore (1852-1933) the novelist, and Col. Maurice Moore (1854-1939), author and ardent worker in the Nationalist cause in the present century. The Moores of Moore Hall descend from the Moores of Alicante, Spain, who were English in origin. Father Florence O'More, alias Moore (1550-1616) was a noted Irish Jesuit in Austria. Rev. Michael Moore (1640-1726) was the only Catholic provost of Trinity College (Dublin University). Others were noted as economists, architects etc., and one Rev. Henry Moore (1751-1844) was friend and biographer of John Wesley. A number of O'Mores of the Leix sept were officers of the Irish Brigade in France in the eighteenth century. The descendants of one of them, Murtagh O'More, (who went to France in 1691) ranked among the nobility of France as lords of Valmont. The family name of the Earls of Drogheda is Moore: their ancestor came to Ireland under Queen Elizabeth I. The Moores of Barmeath have been settled there since the fourteenth century. The grandson of Saint Thomas More claims in his Memoir that the family of More in England was a branch of the O'Mores of Ireland: subsequent research suggests that, though they did indeed come from Ireland, they were of the Barmeath line.

Moores of Moorehall - History
Moorehall
Moorehall is situated on the shores of Lough Carra in South West Mayo 2 miles from the village of Carnacon Carra is a renowned angling (fishing) lake. The area around Moorehall is also of note because it is a carst limestone area of botanical importance. Many species of wild orchid can be found here among other features comparable only with the Burren. The natural resources of woods, rivers, smaller lakes and wildlife of the area remain largely untouched and untarnished. Moorehall was started in 1792. The house was completed in 1795. From then on the Moore family and their descendants were part of the major social, historical, cultural and political history of Ireland. The house was occupied continuously from 1795 until 1910. For the next thirteen years it was periodically unoccupied until it was destroyed by fire in January of 1923, during the Irish Civil War. Moorehall itself is of architectural significance. It was designed by the Waterford Architect John Roberts. This eminent architect also designed Tyrone House in Clarenbridge in Co. Galway and Waterford Cathedral. In Moorehall itself there was much Italian plasterwork - remnants of which still remain.

(click image for a full size view, then click "File/Save As" to save it to you hard drive) Of thirteen families of Moore recorded in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland (1912), twelve claim to have come to Ireland as settlers from England or Scotland and one to be an offshoot of the O'Mores. A number of O'Mores of the Leix sept were officers of the Irish Brigade in France in the eighteenth century. The descendants of one of them, Murtagh O'More, (who went to France in 1691) ranked among the nobility of France as lords of Valmont. The transplantations of the remnants of this sept to Kerry after their subjugation in Leix, may account for the frequency of this name More there now. St. Malachy, who was Archbishop of Armagh from 1132 to 1148, is described by Gams and other ecclesiastical authorities as Malachy O'Moore. His surname, however, was O'Morgair (now obsolete), which is not, in fact, an early form of O Mordha. Father Florence O'More, alias Moore (1550-1616) was a noted Irish Jesuit in Austria. Others members of this family were noted as economists, architects etc. One Rev. Henry Moore (1751-1844) left Dublin for London to work as a woodcarver. Instead he became the devoted servant of John Wesley, who appointed him as one of his literary executors. He wrote a life of Wesley and, despite many opportunities for improvement, he adhered to the austere life of a travelling preacher.

estate runs by the eastern shore of beautiful Lough Carra, about 10 miles south-east of Castlebar. The following is a brief but interesting history of the house and some past members of the Moore family.
The house was built in 1795 by George Moore (1729-1799) who amassed a fortune in the wine and brandy trade in Spain. He also manufactured iodine, a very valuable commodity at the time. He owned a fleet of ships and shipped seaweed from Galway for the manufacture of the iodine. Having taken an oath of allegiance to King George 111, entitled him to lease land. His estate amounted to a massive 12,330 acres of land.
The house comprised of three stories and a basement.
Unfortunately, in January 1923 this stately house was torched (like many others at this time) for political reasons.
The Moore's were unusual in that they were Catholic landlord gentry. Prior to George the family were Protestant. Unlike most other landlords of their time, they were considered to be 'decent'.

GEORGE Augustus MOORE
(Moore Hall 24 February 1852 - London 1933) LIFE AND WORKS: Born from a well-off family he receives education in Oscott, Birmingham. After few years in London he moves to Paris in 1872 where passes 10 years studying painting: this experience will be then told in the autobiographic novel Confessions of a Young Man, 1888 , wonderful example of biography in novel shape. After a first period in which he is close to aestheticism ( A Modern Lover, 1883 , scandalous but realistic portrait of amusements and leisures of a man of his time), he is influenced by naturalism, evident in novels like A Mummer' s Wife, 1885 and the one that is considered its main work and that gains large success, Esther Waters, 1891 story of a nun who has a son and finds herself in having to fight against difficulties due to her maternity. In 1901 he returns to Dublin and here begins a period characterised by a small number of publications but in which he participates to the development of the Irish Renaissance (Rebirth of the Gaelic literature) and is interested in politics. Tales of this period are all of Irish set and deserve citation The Untilled Field, 1903

Biographical Sketch
Born in 1889 to Sir Hugh Barnes and Winifred Strachey Barnes, Mary (Barnes) Hutchinson spent her early childhood in India before being sent to boarding school in England. In 1910 she married a lawyer, St. John Hutchinson, and about the same time her cousin and confidante Lytton Strachey and his friend Duncan Grant introduced her to the Bloomsbury group. Initially shy in the company of this artistic group of people, Hutchinson soon entered into the spirit of Bloomsbury, becoming a generous hostess and patroness. Surrounded by writers as she was, it is perhaps not surprising that she also took to writing, publishing a single volume of short stories and essays
