L. M. Montgomery is not known today for her poetry, though she published approximately 500 poems during her lifetime . The majority of these poems are devoted to nature; in particular, they capture the landscape of Prince Edward Island and rural life on the sea shore. Her contributions as a Canadian poet were noted in Canadian Poets edited by Garvin, John William, in 1916 (available online)
Montgomery's respect for poetry as a literary form is clearly noted in her early literary ambitions and in the literary ambitions of her created characters. For instance, Captain Jim may speak for Montgomery as he says: " There are times in spring when I sorter feel that I might have been a poet if I'd been caught young,"...."I catch myself conning over old lines and verses I heard the schoolmaster reciting sixty years ago. They don't trouble me at other times. Now I feel as if I had to get out on the rocks or the fields or the water and spout them." Furthermore, the references to poetry in Montgomery's works of fiction are substantial. In the Anne series alone, there are numbers of poems that are quoted and referred to, many of which are documented at the

The house in the hollow was "a mile from anywhere"so Maywood people said. It was situated in a grassy little dale, looking as if it had never been built like other houses but had grown up there like a big, brown mushroom. It was reached by a long, green lane and almost hidden from view by an encircling growth of young birches. No other house could be seen from it although the village was just over the hill. Ellen Greene said it was the lonesomest place in the world and vowed that she wouldn't stay there a day if it wasn't that she pitied the child. Emily didn't know she was being pitied and didn't know what lonesomeness meant. She had plenty of company. There was Fatherand Mikeand Saucy Sal. The Wind Woman was always around; and there were the treesAdam-and-Eve, and the Rooster Pine, and all the friendly lady-birches. And there was "the flash," too. She never knew when it might come, and the possibility of it kept her a-thrill and expectant.

There were hundreds of trees, big and little, on the Silver Bush farm and every tree was a personal friend of Pat's. It was anguish to her when one of them, even some gnarled old spruce in the woods at the back, was cut down. Nobody had ever been able to convince Pat that it was not murder to cut a tree down . . . justifiable homicide perhaps, since there had to be fires and lumber, but homicide nevertheless. And no tree was ever cut in the grove of white birches behind the house. That would have been sacrilege. Occasionally one blew down in an autumn storm and was mourned by Pat until time turned it into a beautiful mossy log with ferns growing thickly all along it. Everybody at Silver Bush loved the birch grove, though to none of them did it mean what it meant to Pat. For her it lived.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was born in Clifton (now called New London), Prince Edward Island, daughter of Hugh John Montgomery and Clara Woolner Macneill. Her twenty-three-year-old mother died of tuberculosis when Maud was just twenty-one months old, and her maternal grandparents, Alexander and Lucy Macneill, took over her care at the Macneill homestead in Cavendish. She grew up in the seaside fishing and farming community, and knew intimately all of its beaches, woods, fields, and homes. In 1890 she was invited to visitperhaps to live withher father and his new wife in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. She enjoyed the train trip itself and made some wonderful friends while out westeven saw her name in print for the first timebut she and her stepmother did not get along. She was homesick for the Island, too, and returned in 1891. Her awe over the size and beauty of Canada never left her. Maud graduated from Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown in 1894 and received a first-class teacher's licence. At the convocation exercises, she read her essay on Shakespeare's "Portia" to an appreciative audience. She taught school first in Bideford, Prince Edward Island, where she was reasonably happy though she had a large class. She was courted by several young men and recorded many jolly times in her journal. The Bideford Parsonage, where she boarded that winter, has now become a museum in her honor.

Returning to teaching, Maud continued to write for publication, even rising early on cold mornings to work wrapped in a heavy coat. When her grandfather died in 1898, she returned to Cavendish to help her grandmother at home. Writing when time permitted, she was able to report in 1901 that she could now make a living by her pen. She worked from 1901 to 1902 on a Halifax newspaper but found that she could still produce fiction in spare moments in the office. Back in Cavendish, she kept up her household duties and writing along with regular diary entries and lengthy correspondence. 1. Always concerned with life on Prince Edward Island, Montgomery's books were published all over the world,
translated into several languages and adapted to stage and film. In all, seven sequels to Anne would be written as
well as an autobiographical Emily trilogy. Her legacy also includes hundreds of poems, many short stories, dozens
of books of fiction, and personal diaries 2. This photo of L. M.Montgomery was taken circa 1904-5 while she was writing Anne of Green Gables which was rejected by publishers five times before its publication in 1908 [University of Guelph]
In 1904 Montgomery began her first book. About a girl sent to an elderly couple who had applied to an orphanage for a boy, Anne of Green Gables was written with enthusiasm but put away with disappointment after five publishers' rejections. Another try succeeded, and Anne was published in 1908. It sold quickly and far beyond its anticipated audience of teenage girls. Older readers, men and women, responded to Montgomery's believable characters, lively plots, sense of humour, sensitivity to natural beauty, and message of an underlying goodness in life despite its darkness. Anne eventually was translated into many languages including Braille. Her author could record: "The dream dreamed years ago at that old brown desk in school has come true at last after years of toil and struggle."

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942), the author of the classic novel for children, Anne of Green Gables , kept extensive journals for most of her life, beginning them in 1889 when she was fourteen and continuing them until shortly before her death. An instant bestseller in Canada, the first volume of The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery covers the years up to 1910 and culminates in the publication of Anne of Green Gables . The second volume (1910-1921) portrays Montgomery in the midst of great upheaval, both in her life and in the world around her. Now, the long-awaited third volume brings us through her middle years, a time when Montgomery's personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. Ranging from 1921-1929, this revealing journal documents her efforts to juggle the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and familyeveryday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. Here she writes of the triumphs and trials of being a best-selling author: growing fame; the successful midwifery of her new heroines Emily and Marigold and a more adult novel

    Review by Deborah Mervold. excerpt:
If her novels contain hidden rebellion, her journals pulse with open resistance, resentment, and depression at the structures of daily life that caught her ambition in cobwebs. She felt trapped in her marriage, confined by motherhood, and bound by the need to present a smiling face of domestic happiness in accord with the romantic novels she was producing. She was fettered by her own popularity and by the need to maintain her success in order to supplement her husband's income as a poorly paid country parson. And she was caught, perhaps unawares, in another trap; her own facility in creating narratives. To keep her secret journal going, she unconsciously adapted her life to her narrative skill. Gradually she began to make life-choices shaped to fit the kind of story she was prepared to tell in that journal.
So Montgomery's gift for storytelling both twisted and reinforced the tangled threads of her life. She never undervalued that gift; it helped her endure considerable trials, which she was then able to convert into amusing anecdotes and engaging plots. For her writing was a refuge, a solace, and a joy. . . . Her words have brought pleasure to many, for through them Montgomery created a circle of friends, a ring of laughter, and a sense of place.

This volume of Lucy Maud Montgomery's journal writing offers readers a personal in-depth look at what her life as a writer, wife and mother was like during a period of great change in Canadian history. Her complex character is revealed to us through her colourful, sensitive writing. As a result she becomes as engaging and vital to readers as her own Anne. Writing these journal entries was necessary for Montgomery - it was her therapy. She longed to have a kindred spirit to share her thoughts with, but in the small town where she was the "minister's wife" her diary was the substitute soul mate. This volume is a valuable source for those interested in early twentieth-century Ontario. We learn about World War l; transportation from the horse-and-buggy stage to the first automobile; medical treatments for physical and psychological problems; and the role of women. The journal entries are nicely complemented by over one hundred photographs of people and places. This volume also contains an extensive chronological listing of notes, omissions (of journal entries), and an index, which allows easy access to the wealth of information contained in this book.
