Theodor Mommsen
Mommsen's many writings - a bibliography up to 1887 lists over 900 items - revolutionized the study of Roman history. He was the general editor of, and chief contributor to, the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum , the gigantic collection of Roman inscriptions published by the Berlin Academy (1867-1959). This work laid the foundations for a systematic study of Roman government, administration, economics, and finance. Mommsen's books on Roman coinage and on Roman constitutional and criminal law are still classics in their fields. But he was more than a brilliant scholar with a tremendous grasp of detail and a powerful talent of organization. He was a vivid and powerful writer. His passionate involvement in the revolution of 1848-49 deeply affected the point of view of his main work, the incomplete From Nobel Lectures, Literature 1901-1967 , Editor Horst Frenz, Elsevier Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1969 This autobiography/biography was written at the time of the award and later published in the book series Les Prix Nobel Nobel Lectures . German historian whose best-known work is the three-volume History of Rome (1854–1856). He won the 1902 Nobel Prize for literature. Encyclopedia Mommsen, Theodor tā ōdōr m´m sən ) , 1817–1903, German historian. Appointed (1848) professor of civil law at the Univ. of Leipzig, he supported the Revolution of 1848 and lost his chair because of his political opinions. He subsequently taught Roman law at Z¼rich and Breslau and, from 1858, ancient history at the Univ. of Berlin. After the unification (1870) of Germany he came to publicly oppose the policies of Bismarck. His greatest work is his History of Rome (3 vol., 1854–56; several English translations), a classic of historical writing. The fourth volume was never completed, but the fifth appeared in 1885. Mommsen's work, an unmatched re-creation of Roman society and culture, is based largely on his study of ancient coins, inscriptions, and literature. His liberal politics prejudiced his view of ancient history; his German contemporaries are clearly visible on his Roman scene. Although a great admirer of Caesar, he vigorously denounced Caesarism. Mommsen also wrote authoritatively on Roman law, notably in R¶misches Staatsrecht (3 vol., 1871–76) and

Mommsen's best known work is RÖMISCHE GESCHICHTE (3 vols. 1854-56). Although Leo Tolstoy's name was mentioned among the most prominent candidates for the prize, the Nobel committee couldn't accept his radical views, and Mommsen was the one awarded. Tolstoy died in 1910 without receiving the most famous acknowledgment in literature. Mommsen's greatest interest was in Roman law, but he also participated in contemporary politics. "Bismarck has broken the nation's backbone," he wrote when Bismarck made Berlin the political capital. "The injury done by the Bismarck era is infinitely greater than its benefits... The subjugation of the German personality, of the German mind, was a misfortune that cannot be undone."

Theodor Mommsen
Theodor Mommsen was a German historian and writer who specialized in Roman history. Theodor grew up in Oldesloe as the son of a Protestant minister. In Theodor's early years he attended school in Altona. When he grew older, Theodor went on to study Jurisprudence at the University of Kiel. When Theodor had completed his Masters Degree and Ph.D. , the King of Denmark allowed him to study for three years (1844-1847) in Italy. During these three years, Theodor researched Latin inscriptions that were preserved on stone and iron. Theodor became a master of epigraphy, which is the study and interpretation of inscriptions. Theodor made it possible to understand life in the ancient world. When Theodor came home to Schleswig from Italy, his country was in an uproar because the Danish king was trying to overtake Germany. Although he was a native of Schleswig, Theodor considered himself a German and he wanted nothing more than freedom for the German citizens. His work in politics began with his editorship of the Schleswig-Holsteinische Zeitung for the government in 1848. Because journalism really wasn't for him, he was excited to accept a professorship in Civil Law at the

MOMMSEN, THEODOR The three volumes ended with the dictatorship of Caesar. The book has never been continued, for the volume on the Roman Provinces under the Empire, which appeared in 1884, is in reality a separate work. Mommsen was henceforward fully occupied with work of a more technical nature. In 1854 the definite offer was made to him by the Academy that he should be chief editor of a Corpus inscriptionum, with full control, and in order that he might carry on the work he was appointed in 1858 to a professorship at Berlin. The first volume appeared in 1861; five of the succeeding volumes he edited himself, and the whole was executed under his immediate supervision and with the co-operation of scholars whom he had himself trained. Mommsen died at Charlottenburg on the 1st of November 1903. His brothers, Carl Johann Tycho (1819-1900), a great authority on Pindar and Shakespeare, and August (b. 1821), who wrote chiefly on ancient chronology and Greek festivals, were also prominent among German scholars in their day.
