Legacy - Volume 19, Number 2, 2002, pp. 241-254
University of Nebraska Press

Excerpt
Within scholarship on Maria Susanna Cummins (1827-1866), there are two recurrent phrases: "author of the best-selling novel The Lamplighter " and "little is known about her life." Despite the early contextualization of Cummins by Nina Baym and Mary Kelley, most of the recent critical work on Cummins has centered on her first and best-known novel, The Lamplighter Very little critical attention has been paid to Cummins's life, her career as a publishing author, her lesser-known novels, her periodical publications, and her archived letters. The limited scope of scholarship on Cummins perpetuates a narrow vision of her publishing career. Moreover, few scholars have challenged the characterization of Cummins as having "a quiet, retiring personality" and leading "an uneventful, secluded life, occupied with the duties of home and church and with her writing" (" Cummins, Maria Susanna

    Introduction
Nowadays libraries and bookshops seem to be full of books for children: from picture books to novels, from Alice to Alfie, Robinson Crusoe to Bilbo Baggins, Jennings to Adrian Mole, a wide ranging literature both in style and date. But the idea of books written specifically for children is a relatively recent one, as, indeed, is the idea of children themselves as a readership group. As society's attitude to childhood has changed, so has the literature provided for children. Books that may seem unsuitable, unattractive, or downright unpleasant to us today were written by authors with very different perceptions of children and childhood to our own. Before there could be children's books, there had to be childrenchildren, that is, who were accepted as beings with their own particular needs and interests, not merely as miniature men and women.
Written for children by John Rowe Townsend. Until the end of the 17th century, the only books written for children were school text books or books of moral and religious teaching, and books that we now think of as "children's classics", such as

    The Wandering Mind's
    Quote Collection. Occupation.
Cheerfulness is the daughter of employment; and I have known a man come home in high spirits from a funeral, merely because he has had the management of it. Dr. Horne. Employment, which Galen calls "nature's physician," is so essential to human happiness that indolence is justly considered as the mother of misery. Burton. Occupation alone is happiness. Dr. Johnson. It is observed at sea that men are never so much disposed to grumble and mutiny as when least employed. Hence an old captain, when there was nothing else to do, would issue the order to "scour the anchor." Samuel Smiles. The great happiness of life, I find, after all, to consist in the regular discharge of some mechanical duty. Schiller. The crowning fortune of a man is to be born to some pursuit which finds him employment and happiness, whether it be to make baskets, or broadswords, or canals, or statues, or songs. Emerson. Blessed is he who has found his work; let him ask no other blessedness. He has a work, a life purpose. Labor is life. Carlyle. One only "right" we have to assert in common with mankind and that is as much in our hands as theirs is the right of having something to do. Miss Mulock.
