CHAPTER IV CLERK'S HILL FARM
Evesham
"WE shall not lack variety on our journey this morning," announced Polly, when she came back from the ticket-office. "We change three times between Bideford and Evesham, and unless we race after our luggage at each change, we shall surely share the fate of a young English friend, who once confidentially told me she never expected to see her trunk for three days after starting, if she had changes to make on her journey. If her luggage appeared some time during the week, she was satisfied. But we want ours to be in Evesham when we step out there on the platform." "But if the trunks are labelled they will be all right," said the innocent Matron. "And the Matron pretends she has travelled!" sighed Polly, holding up her hands. Everything was labelled and put in the van, excepting, always, wide-mouthed jumbo. The Invalid even wanted him banished. She says she refuses to acquire the European habit of stuffing the railroad carriage so full of personal belongings that she cannot be comfortable herself. The platform at Exeter is a scene of wild confusion when we jump out to look after the luncheon-basket boy. One or two of these youths are in eight, their arms laden down with square baskets, none of which are evidently for us, as the boys pay not the slightest heed to our calls, but proceed to unload their wares on other wildly gesticulating passengers. Every woman, and several men, who passed our carriage, asked us if this train went to such unknown places that we became alarmed for our own safety. The only official in sight was pursued by a bunch of clamouring travellers, and Polly started to add one more to the throng, when we were partially convinced we were in the right carriage by an old lady. She assured us that they had asked seven porters and twenty-seven passengers if this train was for Templecombe, and, as they all said "Yes," she thought we were safe to remain where we were. She further added to our confidence by joining us.

Could ye come back to me,
Douglas, Douglas,
In the old likeness that I knew,
I would be so faithful, so loving Douglas,
Douglas, Douglas, tender and true.
Never a scornful word should pain you,
I'd smile as sweet as the angels do;
Sweet as your smile on me shone ever, Douglas, Douglas, tender and true. Oh! to call back the days that are not! Mine eyes were blinded, your words were few, Do you know the truth now, up in Heaven? Cinderella
Retold by Miss Mulock THERE was once an honest gentleman who took for his second wife a lady, the proudest and most disagreeable in the whole country. She had two daughters exactly like herself in all things. He also had one little girl, who resembled her dead mother, the best woman in all the world. Scarcely had the second marriage taken place, than the stepmother became jealous of the good qualities of the little girl who was so great a contrast to her own two daughters. She gave her all the menial occupations of the house; compelled her to wash the floors and staircases; to dust the bedrooms, and clean the grates; and while her sisters occupied carpeted chambers hung with mirrors, where they could see themselves from head to foot, this poor little damsel was sent to sleep in an attic, on an old straw mattress, with only one chair and not a looking-glass in the room. She suffered all in silence, not daring to complain to her father, who was entirely ruled by his new wife. When her daily work was done, she used to sit down in the chimney corner among the ashes; from which the two sisters gave her the nickname of Cinderella. But Cinderella, however, shabbily clad, was handsomer than they were with all their fine clothes.

The Fair One With Golden Locks
Retold by Miss Mulock THERE was once a King's daughter so beautiful that they named her the Fair One with Golden Locks. These golden locks were the most remarkable in the world, soft and fine, and falling in long waves down to her very feet. She wore them always thus, loose and flowing, surmounted with a wreath of flowers; and though such long hair was sometimes rather inconvenient, it was so exceedingly beautiful, shining in the sun like ripples of molten gold, that everybody agreed she fully deserved her name. And it so befell that the King, coming by chance, or else with a sort of remorse, past the tower, was touched by the voice of the young Avenant, whom he had once so much regarded. In spite of all the courtiers could do to prevent him, he stopped to listen, and overheard these words. The tears rushed into his eyes; he opened the door of the tower, and called: "Avenant!" Avenant came, creeping feebly along, fell at the King's knees, and kissed his feet: "Oh sire, what have I done that you should treat me so cruelly?"

part of my L'Engle collection This is in alphabetical order because, as Madeleine L'Engle is fond of quoting, "comparisons are odious." I've excluded my husband and myself, because self promotion is not the purpose of the list. There are also numerous television writers whose work I admire: Donald P. Bellisario, Deborah Pratt, Paul Brown, Ben Aaronovitch, J. Michael Straczynski, Rockne S. O'Bannon, Joss Whedon, Jane Espenson and Marti Noxon are some of them. But let's not open that can of worms! In writing this, I found that the words "funny" and "interesting" popped up in nearly every entry. L'Engle, McCaffrey, Lewis and Tolkien aren't especially funny for the most part (although Tolkien sometimes is), but the rest are all humorists to some degree, much funnier than I am. The other recurring traits on this list are the likeability of the protagonists (I don't like reading about unpleasant people, even prefering that the antagonists be somewhat sympathetic), and the complexity of the body of work. I'm very fond of recurring characters, and of backstories that develop over the course of many books. Even Thurber and Ellison, whose works are short and populated with nonrecurring casts, have thematic elements that unify otherwise disparate stories and essays.

Early Paperback Romance Novels
Long before the advent of Harlequin and other series of romance novels, American publishers of dime novels such as Street and Smith recognized the importance of women as a market. We were fortunate enough to find a cache of these late nineteen and early twentieth century paperbacks in a Northern New Hampshire estate. The condition reflects their age and the cheap materials used in their manufacture. Chips and tears in the covers are typical as is some spine loss and discoloration. Each, however, is complete and an example of the genre.
