46. Believers And Supporters Of Christian Universalism

Believers and Supporters of Christian Universalism
Christian Universalism The belief that everything in heaven and on earth will ulitmately be reconciled back to the Creator through the work of Jesus Christ, his Son. In plain language, no one is going to be endlessly tortured as has been commonly taught. Famous people throughout the centuries who have declared publicly or strongly hinted that they believe all mankind will ultimately be saved. Remember, during most of Church history, openly declaring this belief often cost one their lives. The list includes early Church Fathers and leaders, theologians, scholars, historians, royalty, writers, poets, statesmen, humanitarians, scientists, and other streams of life. While some may not be well known to Americans living in the twentieth century, they are well known in the countries and times in which they lived. These men and women left written evidence behind declaring their views. Behind them stand millions who, while not having left behind a written record of their beliefs on earth, nevertheless, will one day brightly manifest to all creation as a Great Cloud of Witnesses. This list was compiled from several sources among which are: "A Cloud of Witnesses" by J.W. Hanson, first published in 1885 and reprinted by Concordant Publishing Concern; "Mercy and Judgment" by Canon F.W. Farrar, published in 1881; "Christ Triumphant" by Thomas Allin, first published in 1890, reprinted by Concordant Publishing Concern; and "Universal Reconciliation and the Evangelical Covenant Church." Posted by ESC on October 05, 2003 In Reply to: The way to a man's heart is through his stomach posted by Cybernest on October 05, 2003 : Hi there! : I am trying to find the origins for this phrase: : "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach" : I have searched the Archives... alas unsuccessfully! : Any thoughts gratefully received! Many thanks in anticipation! : Saludos! : Cybernest WAY TO A MAN'S HEART IS THROUGH HIS STOMACH, THE - "The evolution of this saying appears to be almost as indirect as the route to a man's heart. The American statesman John Adams wrote in a letter (1814), 'The shortest road to men's hearts is down their throats,' and some years later Richard Ford's 'A Handbook for Travellers in Spain' (1845) advised, 'The way to many an honest heart lies through the belly.' A few years later, Miss Mulock observed in 'John Halifax, Gentleman' (1857) that the stomach was the way to an Englishman's heart. Fifteen years after that, the writer Fanny Fern broadened the idea to include all men in 'Willis Parton' (c. 1872), rendering the saying in its current form." When he looked at the candle, his eyes had an expression of earnest inquiry quite startling in a new born baby. His nosethere was not much of it certainly, but what there was seemed an aquiline shape; his complexion was a charming, healthy purple; he was round and fat, straight- limbed and longin fact, a splendid baby, and everybody was exceedingly proud of him, especially his father and mother, the King and Queen of Nomansland, who had waited for him during their happy reign of ten yearsnow made happier than ever, to themselves and their subjects

Synopsis In this journal, we see Dodgson settling into his role as Mathematical Lecturer at Christ Church. He took his M.A. in February 1857. He became an active member in Common Room affairs, particularly the meetings organised by the academic staff to discuss the implications of the Royal Commission set up to consider changes to the constitution of the college. The outcomes of this Commission were to have a major effect on the position of the Dons with increased emoluments and more involvement in the management of the college. Over a period of time, power gradually shifted from the Dean and Chapter to the academic staff. Further gains were made by the Dons during Dodgson's time at Oxford in which he can claim some credit for achieving. His interest in art and paintings continued. During this period he made the acquaintance of members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and was captivated by their pictures.
