by Edwin Mims Terms Contents Preface Introduction ... Notes Preface
he present volume is a biography of Lanier rather than a critical study of his work. So far as possible, I have told the story in his own words, or in the words of those who knew him most intimately. If I have erred in placing undue emphasis on the early part of his career, it was intentional, for that is the part of his life about which least is known. I have intentionally emphasized his relation to the South, in order to avoid a misconception that he was a detached figure. The bibliographies prepared by Mr. Wills for the "Southern History Association" and by Mr. Callaway for his "Select Poems of Lanier" make one unnecessary for this volume.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The Faculty Colloquium of East Tennessee State University was organized in 1952 as the Men's Colloquium to promote free discussion and exchange of ideas among male faculty members outside of the university setting. The colloquium encouraged academic presentations and programs aimed at stimulating intellectual discussion among its' members. The meetings of the colloquium were held once a month in the home of a member. The original membership consisted of the following persons: John Allen, Tom Carson, Bob Crawford, Harold Dugger, Clinton Ferguson, George Fox, Perry Holt, Gerald Jaggen, Sam Jasper, Frank Laurens, Albert Laker, Lloyd Pierce, Hal Smith, Dick Stevenson, and Frank Williams. The president of the university was an honorary member. The one officer of the organization was the moderator, who was elected annually. The moderator's duties included getting out meeting notices and scheduling programs.
Membership in the colloquium was limited to male faculty members until 1978 when membership became open to female faculty members as well. The Men's Colloquium then became the Faculty Colloquium. The colloquium ceased to exist in 1979.

Writers of Tennessee
  • The literature of the early settlers is found in the written forms with which they transacted the business of their everyday lives. These trail-clearers, fort-builders, and Indian-fighters gave historians of a later day the framework of their collective biography in the various documents they published.
  • The first writers, in the professional sense of the word, were concerned with religious and political controversy, history, and law. J. G. M. Ramsey, a physician and scholar, wrote the one-volume Annals of Tennessee (1853), a valuable and detailed source of information on pioneer life and government. Through his newspaper and broadside writings he was instrumental in the building of the first steamboat in Knoxville and in securing the first railroads for East Tennessee. John Haywood, of Nashville, justice of the State supreme court, was the author of the widely known Civil and Political History of the State of Tennessee (1823). His

Marcus named Edwin Mims Professor of English
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Leah S. Marcus of the University of Texas at Austin has joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University as the second Edwin Mims Professor of English. She will begin teaching this fall. Marcus was Jane and Roland Blumberg Centennial Professor in English at the University of Texas at Austin from 1995 to fall 1997. Previously she taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her areas of teaching include Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton and the Old Testament as literature. "Leah Marcus, as a noted scholar and outstanding and devoted teacher of the English Renaissance, brings additional luster to the Mims Professorship," said Vanderbilt University College of Arts and Science Dean Ettore F. Infante. "We are delighted at her joining our community." The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and several fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Marcus has written several books including "Puzzling Shakespeare: Local Reading and Its Discontents" (Berkeley and London: University of California Press, 1990,) and "Unediting the Renaissance: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Milton" (London and New York: Routledge, 1996.) Her professional activities include serving on committees of The Modern Language Association of America, The Milton Society of America and election as a trustee of the Shakespeare Association of America.

    Liber: Free the Books Campaign
Liber is the Latin word for both "Free" ( adj. ) and "Book" ( n. ), hence the name. To be a stickler for details, one has a short i , and the other a long i , but after seeing what the Japanese do with English, I don't mind so much messing about with a dead language. ;-)
