Sidney Lanier
by Edwin Mims [American (Southern U.S.) Scholar; 1872-1959. Preface The present volume is a biography of Lanier rather than a critical study
of his work. So far as possible, I have told the story in his own words,
or in the words of those who knew him most intimately. If I have erred
in placing undue emphasis on the early part of his career, it was intentional,
for that is the part of his life about which least is known
I have intentionally emphasized his relation to the South, in order to avoid a misconception that he was a detached figure. The bibliographies prepared by Mr. Wills for the "Southern History Association" and by Mr. Callaway for his "Select Poems of Lanier" make one unnecessary for this volume. Of previously published material, I have been greatly indebted to the Memorial by Mr. William Hayes Ward, the fuller sketch by the late Professor W. M. Baskervill, and the volume of letters published by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons. For new material

Haun By Stephanie Baker N
ot much has been written about author Mildred Haun , yet much has been gained from her literary output. Considered by most to be a regional Southern writer, Haun was born in Hamblen County, Tennessee on January 11, 1911. She grew up in Haun Hollow, Hoot Owl District, Cocke County, Tennessee, which has been described as a typical Appalachian community. It is from this community that Haun drew upon her own experiences and knowledge to create the short stories for which she is most remembered. At the age of 16, Haun moved to Franklin, near Nashville, to attend high school with the intention of becoming a granny-woman, or one who tends the sick and acts as a midwife. In 1931 she began further studies at Vanderbilt University with such fellow classmates as Elizabeth Harris McDavid, Edwin Mims, Fred Santee, John Donald Wade and Robert Penn Warren (Gower 13). Also at Vanderbilt during Haun's years thereif not close friends to herwere three writers who would become important figures in Appalachian literature: James Still Don West , and Jesse Stuart . During her studies at the University, Haun realized that the courses which would enable her to fulfill her ambition of becoming a granny-woman, such as mathematics and science, did not fit her academic skills, so she focused her interests on English under the direction of southern Agrarians-Fugitives such as John Crowe Ransom and Donald Davidson.

Sidney Lanier - Poet and Musician
Georgia-Born, Virginia-Trained, His Works Have Won Ever-Increasing Popularity in Literary Field Since His Death in '81
By Sallie Gravatt Fox
Today is the anniversary of the birth of a Southern poet and musician who is known as the "Sir Galahad of American letters." Sidney Lanier was the son of a Virginia woman and his father was but a few generations removed from the Old Dominion. Sidney Lanier, born in Macon, Ga., February 3, 1842, was the son of Robert Sampson Lanier and Mary J. Anderson. The father was a struggling young lawyer who had a taste for Shakespeare and Addison. The mother was a woman of much piety, thrift and musical ability. There were on both sides traditions of gentility which went back to the older States of Virginia and North Carolina, and in the case of the Laniers to Southern France and England. An ancestor of Robert Lanier, John Lanier, settled in Virginia in 1670. Members of this family moved to North Carolina, then on to Georgia and Alabama. Robert was sent to Virginia for his education and while a student at Randolph-Macon College he met Mary J. Anderson, who later became his wife and Sidney Lanier's mother. It was from this mother Sidney Lanier inherited his Scotch-Irish blood and by her he was reared in rigid Presbyterian discipline. From both parents he inherited a talent for music and poetry. Dr. Edwin Mims says in his biography of Lanier that as a child he could play any instrument placed in his hand, and while still a youth he learned to play the flute, piano, guitar, banjo and violin.
