Biography of A.A. Milne
A.A. Milne (1882 - 1956)
Alan Alexander Milne (January 18, 1882 - January 31, 1956), also known as A. A. Milne, is an English author best known for his books about the talking stuffed bear; Winnie the Pooh and for various children's poems, some of which also feature Winnie-the-Pooh and friends. Milne was born in Scotland but raised in London. As a child one of his teachers was H. G. Wells. He attended Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge where he studied on a mathematics scholarship. While there, he was published in Granta, a student magazine. Milne became a contributor and later assistant editor for the humorous British magazine Punch . His son Christopher Robin Milne was born in 1920. Milne joined the British Army in World War I but after the war wrote a denunciation of war titled "Peace with Honour" (1934) (which he retracted somewhat in 1940 with "War with Honour"). In 1925, he bought a country home, Cotchford Farm in Hartfield, East Sussex. This farm is where he retired to after brain surgery in 1952 left him an invalid. He is most famous for his Pooh books, which feature a boy named Christopher Robin, after his son, and various characters inspired by his son's stuffed animals, most notably the bear named Winnie the Pooh. A Canadian black bear named Winnie (Winnipeg), used as a military mascot by the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, a Canadian Infantry Regiment, in World War One and left to London Zoo after the war, is said to have been the source of the name for Milne's most famous character. E. H. Shepard illustrated the original Pooh books.

Quotes of the Day for 18 January 2004 - A. A. Milne
Alan Alexander Milne was born at Hampstead, London on this day in 1882, the third son of two school teachers. After graduating from Trinity College, Cambridge he was assistant editor of Punch, the English satirical magazine. While serving in France in World War One he contracted trench fever and was sent home, where he started writing plays and contributed items to Punch. Soon after his son Christopher Robin was born, the Milnes moved to a home adjacent to Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. With no expectation of publishing, he wrote several poems about Christopher Robin and a collection of talking animals over the bridge in the forest. But the first collection was published, in 1924, which began the series most of us remember. Long before All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten or Mr Roger's Neighborhood, Christopher Robin, Tigger, Pooh, Eeyore, and Piglet were teaching us how to get along in the world.

His writings met with great success between the wars and, in 1924, Methuen published When We Were Very Young, a collection of verses, many of which had already been eagerly read by his regular readers when they first appeared in Punch. In fact, in 1922 he wrote a detective novel, The Red House Mystery as well as many novels, essays, short stories and verses, he wrote over twenty-five plays and his autobiography It's Too Late Now was published by Methuen in 1939.

Alan Alexander Milne was born in London on January 18, 1882. He was the third and youngest son of London schoolteachers, and to be the surprise of no one in the family, he could read when he was two. As a schoolboy he began to write verses, parodies, and shot humorous pieces for his school's paper. He went on to Cambridge, where he edited the undergraduate paper.
In 1903 he left school and went to London to write. At the end of a year he had spent all of his money and earned almost nothing. He continued writing. During the second year he earned considerably more and supported himself on his earnings. In 1906 he was offered a position at Punch magazine. He was an editor at Punch for the next eight years, during which time he wrote his first book; three collections of his contributions to the magazine were also published.

Apjának magániskolája volt, melynek tanára volt egy ideig H. G. Wells is, aki Milne atyai jóbarátja lett. Milne matematikát tanult a cambridge-i Trinity College-ben. Miután 1903-ban diplomázott, úgy döntött, hogy író lesz. Esszéi és versei a híres angol élclapnál, a Punchnál és a Jame's Gazette-ben jelentek meg. 1906-tól a Punch segédszerkesztõjeként dolgozott. Elsõ regénye, a Lovers in London (Londoni szerelmesek), melyet H. G. Wells tanácsára írt, 1905-ben jelent meg. Következõ kötetében a Punchba írt írásait gyûjtötte egybe.
1916-ban Franciaországba küldték, ahol a titkosszolgálat számára írt propagandaanyagokat.
