English author (1882-1956)
Biography:
Alan Alexander Milne was born in 1882 in Scotland. He soon moved to England, where his father used to work as schoolmaster. He was taught by H.G.Wells , among other teachers. After he had finished his schooling, he began his carreer as a writer in London and in 1918 he published his first book, When We Were Very Young . In 1920 his son, Christopher Robin, was born and Alan decided to write a story about Christopher Robin's nursery toys, entitled Winnie-the-Pooh . Later on, The House at Pooh Corner , which was to be the last of the series, became a best-seller.
On the Internet:
Since Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared, this bear and tiger have become favourites among children from all around the world. Thus there are many sites about these characters. January 18 ~  Here Today Pooh's Library
"After a l l what a r e birthdays H e r e today and g o n e tomorrow." ~ A. A. Milne Writer Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) was born on this day in London, England and was the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, the most famous bear in the world. Milne wrote Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh (1928), the charming tales of Pooh bear and his friends, Tigger (the original "Yahoo"), Piglet (a forever friend ), Rabbit (always rushing) and Eeyore (delightful Mr. Negative). Milne's words about life in the 100-acre woods, written for his only son, Christopher Robin, were brought to life by the line drawings of Ernest H. Shepard. Pooh is more popular today than ever before. Children ... and their parents... continue to be touched by the timeless wisdom and of the rich stories. The secret may be that as Milne wrote for his son, the tales revitalized his own boyhood memories and gave voice to the child in everyone. "A children's book ," he explained, "must be written, not for children , but for the author himself." "Nobody can be un-cheered with a balloon," said Pooh. Nobody can be un-cheered with Pooh.

31. Who Was Alan Alexander Milne?
A(lan) A(lexander), 18821956. English author of children s books, novels, Those who know AA Milne only as the author of the Pooh Books may be surprised
http://www.rakkav.com/homeworlds/greendoor/pages/alan.htm
Who Was Alan Alexander Milne? A. A. Milne was much more than a children's author. The American Heritage Dictionary (1971 edition) describes him thus: " Milne...A(lan) A(lexander) , 1882-1956. English author of children's books, novels, plays and poems." Yet even this statement hardly summarizes the man or even the writer, for A. A. Milne won considerable fame and fortune long before he started writing the first of the "Pooh Books", the book of poems called When We Were Very Young
Alan Alexander Milne (b. January 18, 1882) was the son of John Vine (J. V.) Milne, a dedicated and talented schoolmaster, and Maria Milne, herself a highly competent and talented woman and dedicated Victorian mother. Alan had two brothers, David Barrett (the oldest, generally called Barry) and Kenneth John (Ken). Alan was the youngest (and most precocious) of the three. As he said of himself years later, "In Papa's house it was natural to be interested; it was easy to be clever." Later, Alan would attend classes in the school administered by his father, and be taught there by none other than H. G. Wells (who later wrote The War of the Worlds , among many other works).

The Red House Mystery
Author Info: A.A. Milne
[Alan Alexander]
Of course it's very hampering being a detective, when you don't know anything about detecting,
and when nobody knows that you're doing detection, and you can't have people up to
cross-examine them, and you have neither the energy nor the means to make proper inquiries; and,
in short, when you're doing the whole thing in a thoroughly amateur, haphazard way.
A.A. Milne (The Red House Mystery) A.A. Milne is, of course, best remembered for his series of Winnie the Pooh tales. In addition, he wrote for the famous British humor magazine Punch, was a fine playwright and, though he served in WWI, became an outspoken pacifist. In the midst of all this, he wrote one of the classic English drawing room mysteries The Red House Mystery . The book ends on a note which seems to imply that further adventures will follow, but sadly none did. The Red House is a British manor, home to Mark Ablett, and gathering place for his fun loving friends. But the bucolic setting is disrupted when Ablett's long lost brother, black sheep of the family, is murdered and Mark goes missing. Two guests, Antony Gillingham, a sort of Holmsian jack of all trades, and Bill Beverley, a mildly dense Watson-like sidekick, take it upon themselves to solve the crime. What follows is a reasonably dated but still amusing "intuitive" mystery. Raymond Chandler apparently went out of his way to attack the story as one of the worst examples of the genre, wholly lacking in genuine criminological methodology and requiring enormous intuitive leaps on the part of the "detectives". Still, take it for what it is and it offers a pleasant enough reading experience.

Any manuscript material by Taffy Evans is excessively rare - only one other manuscript has appeared an auction in the last thirty five years. Evans's temperament, so importance to his fellow explorers, is evidenced in this cheerful letter.
The relatively parlous condition of the Terra Nova was but one of the disadvantages Scott suffered in comparison to Amundsen in the Fram. On the journey South the leakage in the Terra Nova sometimes proved more than pumping could contain and there were fears she might sink. During a storm the water level rose in the stokehold, the sleeping quarters were awash and then the furnaces were put out. The coal sludge was choking the pumps, two ponies died, dogs were swept overboard and they lost ten tons of coal and 65 gallons of petrol. The Expedition was two weeks overdue in reaching Cape Town.
The largest, heaviest and strongest man on the Expedition, Taffy Evans, was a great boost to morale with his anecdotes and joking manner. He was extremely resourceful in devising improvement to the equipment and was a first rate sledger. The first man to volunteer for the Expedition, he became Scott's right-hand man and favourite. Scott called him 'a tower of strength'. He died on Beardmore Glacier on 18 February 1911.
