THE HOMŒOPATHIC MEDICAL SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA. Thus permanently organized and officered the society began its active career and history, and during the period of its existence in all later years it has been instrumental in promoting and safeguarding the interests of the homœopathic profession in the Keystone state, and through its members has exercised an influence for good in directing the affairs of that greater body, the American Institute of Homœopathy. There were thirty original members of the society, all of whom were subscribers to the constitution. In the course of the next year the membership increased to seventy-one, and in the third year to ninety-eight. In 1903 the society numbered three hundred and fifty-eight members, which represented about one-half the strength of the profession in the state.

The Political Graveyard: Important Notes: Please Read!
  • This web site is about U.S. political history and cemeteries. For convenient presentation of this material, the site includes a page for each of the more than 3,000 counties in the U.S., as well as for various U.S. and foreign territories and countries. The Political Graveyard has no official connection with any of those areas or governments. For more information about this project, please see the Main Page
  • The list of cemeteries here is not comprehensive, nor is it intended to be. This site only lists about 5,000 cemeteries where politicians are known to have been buried (the number grows gradually as more research is done). There are an estimated cemeteries in the United States. The closest thing to a complete list is the U.S. Geological Survey's GNIS database , which lists about 109,000 cemeteries. See also

    Mt. Olivet Cemetery
    WHITE FAMILY MONUMENT
circa early-mid 1900s Submitted by David Aeberli Mt. Olivet church, just across the Marshall county line, can boast of its history and the history of its cemetery.
The first church built on this site was in 1845. Prior to that, services by a circuit-rider were held in Montgomery's carriage shop whenever the parson came this way, whether once a month, or once in six months. The energetic and religious handful of people combined their resources and erected this first church which the congregation outgrew, and fifty-four years later, in 1899, a second church was erected on the same site.
A prominent family in this section was the Whites, Joseph and Olive. She was a "Blue" before marriage. The countryside teased them considerably - Blue and White. They owned eight hundred acres. In 1857, White's grandson, Homer, one year old, died while on a visit in Pleasant Valley, farther out the Sherrard road. There was no burial ground in the vicinity so the little fellow was buried behind the church on the White property and a rail fence encircled the spot.
As a result of his death, and not having any particular burying spot for those in the vicinity, the Whites gave to the church an acre of ground for this purpose. In appreciation of the gift, the church was therefore named Mt. Olivet, for Mrs. White.

The Wyandotte Floats .In the treaty with the Wyandotte Indians, in 1854, in addition to their reservation, the tribe was granted thirty-two "floating sections," which might be located on any of the public lands west of the Mississippi. These sections (640 acres each), known as the "Wyandotte Floats," were sold, some as low as $800. They could be located, even before the public survey was made, and the title become complete beyond question, at the time of the location. They proved a most convenient mode of adjusting the difficulties as to title of many of the new towns. C. K. Holliday, being then President of the Topeka Town Association, in order to perfect the title to the town site, bought, October 2, 1855, from Isaiah Walker, a member of the Wyandotte Nation, a "Float," and located it upon the site of the town. He purchased it largely with his own means, but dealing in good faith with the association, whose agent he was in the transaction, had the transfers so made as to validate the title to all lands sold by it before or after his location. Thus the title to all lands on the original float, now in Wards 3 and 4 of the city, are traced in the abstracts to Isaiah Walker, who sold the floats to C. K. Holliday, trustee. The notice of the location appeared in the Kansas Freeman , October 1, 1855, (sic)
