Classic Love and Romance Poems Untitled Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)
Love is not all: It is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain,
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
and rise and sink and rise and sink again.
Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
pinned down by need and moaning for release or nagged by want past resolutions power, I might be driven to sell you love for peace, Or trade the memory of this night for food. It may well be. I do not think I would. back to poetry index

I SHALL FORGET by: Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)
SHALL forget you presently, my dear,
So make the most of this, your little day,
Your little month, your little half a year,
Ere I forget, or die, or move away,
And we are done forever; by and by
I shall forget you, as I said, but now,
If you entreat me with your loveliest lie
I will protest you with my favorite vow.
I would indeed that love were longer-lived,
And vows were not so brittle as they are,
But so it is, and nature has contrived
To struggle on without a break thus far,
Whether or not we find what we are seeking
    Is idle, biologically speaking.
"I Shall Forget" is reprinted from A Few Figs from Thistles: Poems and Sonnets . New York: Harper, 1922. MORE POEMS BY EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY RELATED LINKS BROWSE THE POETRY ARCHIVE: A B C D ... Email Poetry-Archive.com

Vallance Review 43, March 2005 "Fatal Interview" with Edna Saint Vincent Millay
Edna Saint Vincent Millay (1892-1950)
In 1931 Millay published Fatal Interview , a volume of 52 sonnets in celebration of a recent love affair (with George Dillon in Paris, 1928). Edmund Wilson claimed the book contained some of the greatest poems of the 20th century [2]. Edna Saint Vincent Millay (1892-1950) Biography [1] The Harp Weaver, and Other Poems , was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1922. Millay's Penchant for Left Wing Politics [2]: Once she had left Vassar College, Millay settled in bohemian Greenwich Village, where she began to court men. There she got involved in the left-wing journal, The Masses , joining her male comrades in their campaign against America's involvement in the First World War. In 1927, Millay got herself into hot water when she protested loudly against the execution of two Spanish activists in Boston. In fact, the demonstration was incitement enough for Millay to publish The Buck and the Snow (1928), which featured highly politicized poems like, "Hangman's Oak", "The Anguish" and "To Those Without Pity". Even if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Library of Congress Acquires Large Collection of Edna St. Vincent Millay Manuscripts
The Library of Congress has recently acquired an extensive collection of manuscripts of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950) that will add more than 20,000 new items to its existing Millay materials housed in the Manuscript Division. The new materials will be available for research as soon as they have been processed and prepared for use. "I have always admired Edna St. Vincent Millay," said James H. Billington, Librarian of Congress. "I spent some time as a youngster with my family on the coast of Maine not far from where she was well known as a legendary figure. I am very pleased that we have been able to expand the Library's Millay holdings through the acquisition of this significant collection of her manuscripts." The Library will purchase the collection over a four- year period from the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society, in a private sale negotiated by Sotheby's, using a mix of public and private funds. In August, most of the materials were transferred to the Library from Sotheby's in New York where they had been stored for several years. In September, the literary executors and trustees added to the Library's collection the relevant papers remaining at Steepletop, Ms. Millay's home in Austerlitz, N.Y.

MILLAY, EDNA ST. VINCENT (1892-1950)
was born in Rockland on February 22, 1892 and moved to Camden with her family when she was twelve, graduated from Camden High School, then Vassar College. Her mother, divorced, had little money for her three daughters, but encouraged reading and music in them. With no prospects of affording college, Edna read her new poem Renascence at a party at the Whitehall Inn in Camden. She so impressed a woman in attendance that she financed Edna's education at Vassar. A plaque set in stone at the top of Mount Battie in Camden commemorates the writing of the poem, supposedly written while enjoying the view from the summit. Many of her poems contained romantic themes of love, death, youthful rebelliousness, and the cosmos. Later her works focused on the events of World War II. In 1933, she and her husband bought Ragged Island, part of Harpswell, in Casco Bay. She enjoyed wide popularity, then suffered a nervous breakdown in the late 1940's and died on October 19, 1950, in Austerlitz, New York. Among her poems are A few Figs from Thistles The Ballard of the Harp-Weaver Conversation at Midnight , and The Murder of Lidice , about the destruction of a Czechoslovakian town by the Germans in World War II.

Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)
Departure
It's little I care what path I take, And where it leads it's little I care; But out of this house, lest my heart break, I must go, and off somewhere.
It's little I know what's in my heart, What's in my mind it's little I know, But there's that in me must up and start, And it's little I care where my feet go.
I wish I could walk for a day and a night, And find me at dawn in a desolate place With never the rut of a road in sight, Nor the roof of a house, nor the eyes of a face.
I wish I could walk till my blood should spout, And drop me, never to stir again, On a shore that is wide, for the tide is out, And the weedy rocks are bare to the rain.
But dump or dock, where the path I take Brings up, it's little enough I care; And it's little I'd mind the fuss they'll make, Huddled dead in a ditch somewhere.
"Is something the matter, dear," she said, "That you sit at your work so silently?" "No, mother, no, 'twas a knot in my thread. There goes the kettle, I'll make the tea."
