Mit Dinggedichten wie Der römische Brunnen und Zwei Segel gilt er heute u. a. auch als bedeutender Wegbereiter des Symbolismus. 1. LEBEN Der römische Brunnen und einem Michelangelo -Zyklus nieder. Durch die Bemühungen seiner Schwester Betsy konnte, zunächst anonym, 1863 als erster Gedichtband Zwanzig Balladen von einem Schweizer erscheinen, der 1869 in erweiterter Form und unter dem Namen seines Autors als Romanzen und Bilder im Leipziger Verlag Haessel neu veröffentlicht wurde. In der Folge erschienen alle weiteren Werke des Autors bei Haessel, so auch das erbauliche Versepos Huttens letzte Tage – Meyers erster großer Erfolg – und die Idylle Engelberg (beide 1872). 1875 heiratete Meyer die vermögende Louise Ziegler, was ihn gesellschaftlich rehabilitierte; 1879 wurde die gemeinsame Tochter Camilla geboren. Thomas Siener, geboren in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, lebt seit 1988 als Konzertharfenist in Berlin. Nach erfolgreichen künstlerischen Reifeprüfungen in Klavier und Harfe erhielt er ein zweijähriges Stipendium am Conservatoire "Hector Berlioz" in Paris. Konzertreisen führten ihn in die Schweiz, nach Italien, Schweden und Frankreich. Thomas Siener ist ein vielseitiger Künstler, der die Möglichkeiten seiner Instrumente mit seinen verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen im Lauf der Zeit sehr schätzen gelernt hat. REALISMUS Der Realismus Schon zur Zeit des Biedermeiers und des Jungen Deutschlands (1820-1850) wurde die Tendenz immer stärker, das Leben, so wie es in Wirklichkeit ist, in der Literatur lebensgetreu darzustellen. Um 1850 fing man im Ernst an, das alltägliche, bürgerliche Leben in allen Aspekten und im Detail ganz realistische zu beschreiben. Fantastische, märchenhafte Elementen, die bei den Romantikern so beliebt gewesen waren, verschwanden jetzt fast vollkommen und wurden durch eine objektivere, nüchternere Beobachtung des Lebens ersetzt. Es entstand die Literaturbewegung "Realismus." Gleichzeitig und nebenbei jedoch entstand "der poetische Realismus," also ein Literaturgenre, in dem die Dichter und Schriftsteller daran interessiert sind, die Realität durch die Einmischung von Poesie zu verklären und verschönen. Man sieht schon in der Literatur des poetischen Realismus den Einfluß der modernen Wissenschaft: kausale Verhältnisse werden betont. Der bei weitem größte Teil der Literatur des poetischen Realismus ist Prosadichtung und Heimatdichtung zugleich und besteht aus Romanen, Novellen, und Erzählungen. Besonders die Novelle wurde bei den poetischen Realisten eine sehr beliebte Literaturform und erreichte ein sehr hohes Niveau als die strengste Form der Prosadichtung. Viele Dichter wie Goethe, Paul Heyse und Ludwig Tieck trugen zur Theorie und Entwicklung der Novelle bei. Heyse z. B. ist wegen seiner "Wendepunkt Theorie" berühmt geworden. Bei Goethe handelt sich die Novelle um "eine unerhörte, sich ereignete Begebenheitit," d.h., sie muß ein Stück Wirklichkeit beschreiben, das neu und merkwürdig ist und in der Tat sich wirklich ereignet oder stattgefunden hat.
