The Romantic Period, 1820-1860: Fiction: Herman Melville (1819-1891)
Index Herman Melville, like Nathaniel Hawthorne , was a descendant of an old, wealthy family that fell abruptly into poverty upon the death of the father. Despite his patrician upbringing, proud family traditions, and hard work, Melville found himself in poverty with no college education. At 19 he went to sea. His interest in sailors' lives grew naturally out of his own experiences, and most of his early novels grew out of his voyages. In these we see the young Melville's wide, democratic experience and hatred of tyranny and injustice. His first book, Typee , was based on his time spent among the supposedly cannibalistic but hospitable tribe of the Taipis in the Marquesas Islands of the South Pacific. The book praises the islanders and their natural, harmonious life, and criticizes the Christian missionaries, who Melville found less genuinely civilized than the people they came to convert. Moby-Dick; or, The Whale

Herman Melville Herman Melville is regarded as one of the greatest American novelists of of the 19th century. His best-known work, Moby Dick (1851), was not widely appreciated by critics or the public until after his death. Moby Dick was dedicated to the author Nathaniel Hawthorne , a friend who was idolized by Melville. Typee , an account of his stay with the cannibals, was first published in Britain, like most of his works. The book sold roughly 6,000 copies in its first two years. Its sequel, Omoo (1847), was based on his experiences in Polynesian Islands, and was as successful as the first one. Throughout his career, Melville's works enjoyed a higher estimation in Britain than in America. His older brother, Gansevoort, held a government position in London, and helped to launch Melville's career. In 1847 Melville married Elisabeth Shaw, daughter of the chief justice of Massachusetts. After three years in New York, he bought a farm, "Arrowhead", near Nathaniel Hawthorne's home at Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and the two authors became friends. Melville had almost completed Moby-Dick when Hawthorne encouraged him to change it from a mere whaling story into an allegorical novel. Inspired by Hawthorne, Melville rewrote Moby Dick into a powerful novel that, beneath the story of a whaling adventure, is a meditation on God's providence and dealings with humankind. Melville wrote other novels around the same time as Moby Dick , including Redburn White-Jacked

Works in the Collection Manuscript Materials Biographies Herman Melville was born August 1, 1819, in New York. Starting at age 18, Melville went to sea, first on a voyage to England, and then on a whaling voyage. In 1842, tired of the unpleasant conditions of whaling, Melville and another sailor deserted the ship in the Marquesas Islands. Melville ended up as a captive of the violent tribes of the Typee valley, but was rescued and returned to the seafaring life. He spent time in both the merchant and naval service, and returned to Boston in 1844. Melville turned his experiences into two early novels: Typee and Omoo , which were very successful. Though now well-regarded, his later works such as Moby Dick and Pierre: The Ambiguities met with little contemporary success.
