History of Systematic Theology Topic: Theology Type: Book section Author: A. H. Strong SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY Strong, A. H., Systematic Theology th Pr. 1958; 1907; Philadelphia, PA; The Judson Press. Pp. 44-49. History of Systematic Theology In the Eastern Church, Systematic Theology may be said to have had its beginning and end in John of Damascus (700-760). Ignatius (?-115- Ad Trall ., c. 9) gives us "the first distinct statement of the faith drawn up in a series of propositions. This systematizing formed the basis of all later efforts" (Prof. A. H. Newman). Origen of Alexandria (186-254) wrote his Peri Arcwn Athanasius of Alexandria (300-373) his Treatises on the Trinity and the Deity of Christ ; and Gregory of Nyssa in Cappadocia (332-398) his LogoV kathchtikoV o megaV . Hatch, Hibbert Lectures , 323, regards the De Principiis of Origen as the "first complete system of dogma," and speaks of Origen as "the disciple of Clement of Alexandria, the first great teacher of philosophical Christianity." But while the Fathers just mentioned seem to have conceived the plan of expounding the doctrines in order and of showing their relation to one another, it was John of Damascus (700-760) who first actually carried out such a plan. His EkdosiV akribhV thV orqodoxou PistewV , or Summary of the Orthodox Faith , may be considered the earliest work of Systematic Theology. Neander calls it "the most important doctrinal text-book of the Greek Church." John, like the Greek Church in general, was speculative, theological, semi-pelagian, sacramentarian. The

Origin Of Universe, Solar System, Earth
Origin of the Universe
Big Bang
Event that led to the formation of the Universe1500 - 2000 Ma. At that moment, all matter was compressed into a space billions of times smaller than a proton. Both time and space were set to zero. (Without space there can be no time in the space-time continuum of Einstein's theory of relativity). Since that moment galaxies have been moving away from each other, and the universe has been expanding.
Evidence for Big Bang
  • The universe is expanding - (Edwin Hubble, 1929) Observed a Red Shift when looking at the spectrum light coming from distant galaxies. All light from these galaxies is shifted towards longer wavelengths, i.e.. toward red light. This is the Doppler effect , and could only occur if the galaxies were moving away from each other at very high speeds. In fact they are moving away from each other at a rate proportional to the distance between them.
Analogies for Doppler effect - change in frequency of any wave (sound/light) that is caused by movement of the source relative to the observer
Sound waves - car horn, train whistle. Train moves toward you, sound waves are compressed - higher pitch. Train moves away, sound waves stretched - lower pitch.

    Philip Melanchthon
    byLucas Cranach
Already a renowned scholar as a young man, Melanchthon taught beside Martin Luther at the University of Wittenberg. Originally appointed to teach Greek, Melanchthon later lectured in theology and several other disciplines. His textbook, the Loci Communes , continues to influence Lutheran theology to the present. Melanchthon also contributed to the institutional development of Lutheranism, through his authorship of the Augsburg Confession and other confessional writings, his preparation of forms of examination for ordinands, and instructions for visitations in Lutheran congregations. Along with several others he assisted in the preparation of Martin Luther's translation of the Bible into German . His differences with Luther and his views on certain matters, including the

    The Review
    • On the occasion of Melanchthon"s 500th birthday, the Willibald-Pirckheimer-Gesellschaft arranged a symposium at Nuremberg from April, 25th to 27th, 1997. The contributions to this symposium are collected in the volume under review here.
    • The first chapter ( ), written by Martin Greschat, deals with Melanchthon"s life and works, and serves as a concise as well as a precise introduction to the political and religious circumstances Melanchthon had to face. The second chapter ( ) by Jürgen Leonhardt sheds light on Melanchthon as an author of Greek-grammar-textbooks. Leonhardt makes use of several editions of some of Melanchthon"s works to demonstrate that Melanchthon represents a method of teaching and learning strictly directed towards the original Greek and Latin texts.

    RICHARD C. KESSLER REFORMATION COLLECTION
    Manuscript Collection Number 001
    Scope Note
The Richard C. Kessler Reformation Collection was established in October 1987 at Pitts Theology Library, Emory University. James T. Laney, President of Emory University, and Richard C. Kessler, an active Lutheran layman and Atlanta businessman, signed a formal agreement by which Kessler and his wife, Martha, donated their private collection of Reformation imprints and manuscripts to Emory. A committee of representatives from Emory University and the Lutheran church was established to oversee the development, conservation, use, and programmatic dimensions of the collection. The Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century remains the pivotal religious movement in Western culture since the introduction of Christianity. The life and works of Martin Luther (1483-1546) are central to the understanding of the Reformation and its consequent movements. The Richard C. Kessler Reformation Collection focuses on the sixteenth century German Reformation as expressed in the writings of Luther, his friends, and his opponents. The core of the collection is the corpus of original impressions of Luther's writings, encompassing works from 1517 to 1546. The collection also includes materials from the pre-Reformation era (pre-1517). These holdings can help us understand the religious and ecclesiastical setting of the times, especially in Germany. They include the early written attempts to reform the church and writings of the humanists who contributed to the development of critical historical research and linguistic studies.

...where the Protestant Reformation began. Wittenberg or Lutherstadt-Wittenberg is forever famous as the place where on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church. A simple call for debate became the spark that ignited the Reformation. Although both Luther and the door are long gone, you can stand before the replica door, with all 95 Theses inscribed in bronze and think about how one man, standing up for truth, could change the world forever.
Wittenberg in Luther's day, was an emerging University town. When Friedrich III the Wise (1463 - 1525) became ruler of Saxony he decided to make Wittenberg his residence. It was the home of Professor and Reformer Philip Melanchthon (1497 - 1560) , artist Lucas Cranach the Elder and his son and many other prominent intellectuals.
