Harvest
(John Charles McNeill, 1874-1907) Cows in the stall and sheep in the fold;
Clouds in the west, deep crimson and gold;
The noise of a wagon that jolts through the gloam
There are lights in the windows; a blue spire of smoke
Climbs from the grange grove of elm and oak.
And an incense to Toil is the smell of the loam

A Christmas Hymn
(John Charles McNeill, 1874-1907)
Near where the shepherds watched by night
The wise men saw the starry light
No armored castle there to ward
But, wrapped in common cloth, our Lord
No booming bells proclaimed his birth,
No iron thunders shook the earth,
The temples builded in his name
And all the choirs that sang his fame
But, while the world about him slept, One gentle face above him kept And, if his baby eyes could tell No roar of gun, no boom of bell Now praise to God that ere his grace He looked into his mother's face, And praise to God that ere men strove One loved him with a mother's love, Return to Christmas Poems and Stories For more poems by John Charles McNeill, visit your public library or the Project Gutenberg online. Consistent with Macleod's policy to publish Amerindian and Chicano poetry, Pembroke Magazine number 2 (1970) contains work by Ray Young Bear and Simon J. Ortiz. The fifty-six-page magazine also contains work by Hugh MacDiarmid, Guy Owen, and Ronald H. Bayes. Pembroke Magazine number 3 (1971) is twice as large as the previous issue. It includes a West Indian anthology and features the work of Ortiz. William Stafford, Daniel Hoffman, Philip Levine, and Robert McAlmon also contribute poems. In Pembroke Magazine number 4 (1973) editor Macleod begins his memoirs, "I Never Lost Anything in Istanbul." The issue concentrates on work by native Americans. Macleod notes that UNC Pembroke from which Pembroke Magazine originates, began as a normal school for Indians. Number 4 contains work by Grey Cohoe, Ortiz, and Duane Niatum. Other contributors are Brom Weber, Millen Brand, and Sonja Prins, European editor or Front , published in Holland in 1930 and 1931. Pembroke Magazine number 5 (1974) runs to 152 pages. Contributors include Carl Rakosi, Georgia O'Keeffe, and W. S. Graham. The feature of number 5 is Kay Boyle, one of many American writers in Paris during the period of the so-called Lost Generation.

The Creative Spirit Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(tm). The Creative Spirit Newsletter November 20, 2003 Hello TCS Members, For this American Thanksgiving week we have photo contributions from our member, Dave Grant . The above applet is made from some of his fine pumpkin images (go slowly over the applet for it has many photos) and the other fall scenes you see here are also his. To complete the mood, we have a few lovely poems from various poets. The last poem is from our member, Joan Adams Burchell , and it bestows the truest meaning of Thanksgiving: giving thanks for our many blessings. Thank you, Joan. Blessings.... Cheyenne
The Pumpkin Ah! on Thanksgiving day, when from East and from West,
From North and from South comes the pilgrim and guest;
When the gray-haired New Englander sees round his board
The old broken links of affection restored;
