Above all, he believed in a holistic psychology that utilized every available tool for understanding the human psyche. He was the first to formulate a theory of human instinctual behavior, and he influenced the development of the new field of social psychology. Born in 1871, in Lancashire, England, the second son of Rebekah Smalley and Isaac Shimwell McDougall, a wealthy Scottish industrialist, McDougall was educated at a local private school and then at the Realgynmnasium in Weimar, Germany. Although his father wanted him to study law or work in the family businesses, his mother supported his desire to become a scientist.

I AM GRATEFUL TO KEVIN LAMB FOR ASSISTANCE IN THE PREPARATION OF THIS ARTICLE
"Favourable consideration of the Lamarckian theory excepted, there is nothing more injurious to the reputation (both popular and in the scientific world) of a man of science than to be mixed up with psychic research, unless it be a display of keen interest in the eugenic problem. I have suffered much under both heads in the way of loss of reputation, unpopularity, slanderous misrepresentation, and scornful hostility. It seems my fate to espouse unpopular causes; but to support them so temperately and with so much critical reserve that I am as little acceptable to the minority in opposition as to the dominant crowd. My only recourse is to find what satisfaction I may in the 'bloody but unbowed' attitude, and in the approval of the select few."
William McDOUGALL, 1934, Religion and the Sciences of Life . London : Methuen.
UNSURPRISINGLY, the greatest psychologists have all been pretty unconventional. Aristotle was a biologist-turned-philosopher who paced around ceaselessly - hence his School being named Peripatetic; and, unusually for a Greek of his day, he was head-over-heels in love with his wife.[

13. [PINC] A Bimonthly Magazine Issued On The Internet, Pinc Confronts

http://www.cycad.com/cgi-bin/pinc/july97/pinc_vol1_no3.txt
[PINC] A bimonthly magazine issued on the Internet, pinc confronts political correctness, taboo subjects and latter-day shibboleths. Race, intelligence, feminism, postmodernism, higher education, speech codes and more. Volume 1, Number 3, July 1997 Cosmopolitan, taboo-trashing and heretical to the hilt. - Contents * Distribution How to get pinc * Editorial Flavour of the moment. * Letters Gloria Mitchell, Brian Carnell, Jim Bowman * Feature Articles o William McDougall by Chris Brand He was the leading critic of the rising tide of behaviourism within psychology. He abhorred its simple-minded materialism and empiricism that would for half a century set aside most of human nature as unsuitable for scientific study and finally declare itself capable of treating mental disorder (by providing granny-style 'count up to ten' treatments for the diminishingly few mental patients whom biological psychiatry could not already help). o PC in Australia by Antonia Feitz The Hanson 'phenomenon' has certainly dealt PC a body blow in Australia. and the elites don't like it. They fail to understand that what they perceive as a rise in racism, intolerance, hate speech etc. is nothing of the kind. It is the articulation of previously suppressed opinion. Critics of PC have always warned of this very danger - suppressed views will eventually explode. o Freedom, Discrimination and Culture by Jim Kalb Freedom of association is taking a beating in America. Since the '60s "civil rights" has been our established religion, preached from pulpits, enforced by law, and not subject to debate. Those who question it are excluded from public life, and mainstream discussion shrugs off their arguments. o Affirmative Action by Steve Plaut Why stop at women in management? Why not adopt the whole system of Balkanization now spreading in America and fix quotas and reverse discrimination in every area of life? Let us have quotas for every group that feels insufficiently favored, including ethnic groups, homosexuals, senior citizens, Reform Rabbis, transvestites, vegetarians, the bald, the obese, stutterers, and dolphins? o Spanking by John Taylor There is no consensus amongst psychologists and social workers about spanking. A sizable portion defend spanking as a useful tool in the business of parenting. Some even advocate it as a means of releasing emotions and improving emotional communication between parent and child * Serial PC Killers o The first installment of Chris Brand's intellectual memoirs, which will be serialised in full in forthcoming issues of pinc. * Books o Dysgenics: Genetic Deterioration in Modern Populations o Criminal Justice? The Legal System Versus Individual Responsibility o Left and Right: The Significance of a Political Distinction o Darwin's Athletes: How Sport has Damaged Black America and Preserved the Myth of Race o Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey o A Separate Creation: The Search for the Biological Origins of Sexual Orientation * Webpersons Corner - Distribution Currently issued bimonthly. * The latest issue and previous issues are always available on the world wide web, at http://cycad.com/cgi-bin/pinc. * The magazine is also distributed by email, as a single text-only message. To receive copies and notifications by email, join the pinc distribution list. * To receive one email copy of the current edition, simply send mail to pinc@cycad.com. This will automatically generate a reply containing a text version of the current edition. - Editorial Returning to its usual format, this edition of pinc wanders merrily through the PC maze without pausing in one place too long. We are pleased to report that interest in this irregular broadside is picking up, and that each successive edition grows in size and in ambition. Future editions will continue the serialization, begun here, of Chris Brand's intellectual memoirs, somewhat after the fashion of Karl Popper's Unended Quest. Submission of material to be considered for publication in pinc is encouraged, as is considered response to material published here. Contact the editors at pinced@cycad.com. - Letters Date: Fri, 09 May 1997 18:34:20 -0500 To: pinc@cycad.com From: Gloria Mitchell

Ideas and Interests William McDougall is considered by some to have been the foremost psychologist of all English-speaking countries. He has contributed significantly to more branches and departments of psychology than anyone else writing in English. He is the exponent of hormic psychology, the central idea being that there is an end or purpose which goads us to action, without any real knowledge of its nature, and often without benefit or even thought of pleasure. Human progress can only be determined in terms of "horme" or "drive". He theorized that human behavior is determined by both instinctive and intentional strivings. His chief difficulties lay in proving, or even explaining, interactionism in a physical world; his belief in free will; and his commitment to the theory of the transmission of acquired characteristics.
