During the second battle of Ypres the canal bank at this point formed the British front line, with the Germans on the opposite bank. Some concrete bunkers at the bottom of the bank were used as advanced dressing stations, and it was around these that the cemetery grew. One of the doctors working in the bunkers was the Canadian, John McCrae, and it was here that he wrote his famous poem 'In Flanders Field'. There are over 1,000 burials here including Rifleman Valentine Strudwick - one of several 15 year olds buried in Flanders. The youngest British casualty of the war was Private J Condon, a 14 year old who is buried nearby at Poelkapelle. (Although others suggest he was only 13 - see The Heritage of the Great War The Dressing Station Bunkers lie adjacent to the cemetery and the plaque to John McCrae is inside the cemetery entrance. This page was made in dedication to my father's uncle John, who died at age 17 in France, during the "Great War", WW1. Also in rememberance of my father, John Alexander Lamb, (1921-1994) who serviced planes for the second World War, and later helped train young NATO pilots to keep the hard won peace. John McCrae (1872-1918): In Flanders Fields (1915) Canadian poet John McCrae was a medical officer in both the Boer War and World War I. A year into the latter war there was published in Punch magazine, on December 8, 1915, the sole work by which he would be remembered. This sonnet commemorates the deaths of thousands of young men who died in Flanders during the grueling battles there. It created a great sensation, and was used widely as a recruiting tool, inspiring other young men to join the Army. Legend has it that he was inspired by seeing the blood-red poppies blooming in the fields where many friends had died. In 1918 McCrae died at the age of 40, in the way most men died during that war, not from a bullet or bomb, but from disease: pneumonia, in his case. John McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle at Ypres in the spring of 1915.

Rudyard Kipling, John McCrae and Helga Ross Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget, lest we forget! Rudyard Kipling, "Recessional" (June 22, 1887) [1] INTRODUCTION
As with the November 2002 and 2003 Remembrance Day Vallance Reviews, covering sonnets by the early twentieth century British poet and progeny, Rupert Brooke, and the early twenty-first century American poetess, Sondra Ball, the Remembrance Day 2004 Vallance Review once again commemorates the dreadful tragedy of war. We know the tragic count, even with our eyes closed: the loss of countless millions of precious human lives in both the World Wars, of civilization's most cherished values and possibly even the life of our small Earth in its fragile grandeur. This year, we feature the contemporary poet, Helga Ross, whose sonnet, "Rue of Thought" reaffirms humankind's all too often unexpressed need, at our dire peril, never to forget the awful scars of war.
