April 22 ~  In Flanders Field In Flanders Field: Story of the Poem
"We shall not s l e e p though p o p p i e s grow /In Flanders fields." ~ John McCrae Lt. Col. John McCrae (1872-1918) was born in Ontario and wrote Canada's beloved 15-line poem In Flanders Field (1915) while stationed in Flanders, Belgium during World War I. McCrae threw away the first draft of the poem and a fellow officer retrieved it and submitted it to several publications in England. When published in Punch magazine with a rarely-used bold type, the poem became an immediate international success. Flanders Field inspired soldiers and struck a chord in the hearts of patriots at home. McCrae was one of the 635,000 Canadians who enlisted. A caring artillery and medical officer, he was inspired by the Second Battle of Ypres, "17 days of Hades," he described in horror, as in the trenches he watched his close friend Lieutenant Alexis Helmer die of shrapnel wounds. McCrae buried his beloved friend amid poppies in a grave marked by a simple wooden cross. He then wrote the vibrant poem in 20 minutes. Because of McCrae's inspiration, bright

John McCrae "In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row..." - John McCrae, 1915. In what would become the best known poem from the "Great War", John McCrae was solemnly describing the horror, suffering and loss that he saw as he treated the wounded who had fought near Ypres, Belgium - an area known as Flanders. It was here that the Germans first used deadly chlorine gas in their attacks. Undoubtedly, John was not spared of its poison. According to some accounts, the death of a friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, who was killed by a shell on May 2 1915, greatly affected McCrae. When Lieutenant Helmer was buried later that day, it was McCrae who performed the funeral ceremony in the chaplain's absence. John McCrae was born (November 30 1872) and raised in Guelph, Ontario, where the McCrae home still stands, serving as a museum. John graduated from the University of Toronto medical school, receiving the gold medal, in 1898, but soon found himself leading an artillery battery in the Boer War. Years later, when the Great War began, he felt compelled to enlist as soon as possible. No one could have imagined the horrific events that would unfold in the next four years, but John was one of many witnesses who saw the bitter fruits of War. Like thousand of school children, I memorized the words to John's moving poem. May I never forget them, nor the sacrifice made by brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom, and now lie in Flander's Field.

The Poem - In Flanders Fields
The poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian army physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae ( 1872 - January 28, 1918 - picture left ) remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. World War 1. A question asked again and again: why poppies Poppy seed will lie in the ground for years if the soil is undisturbed. That churned up cemetery known as the Western Front provided the ideal medium for masses of poppies to blanket the graves. When McCrae wrote his poem in May, 1915, bloodred poppies blossomed like no one had ever seen before or probably ever will again. The poppy is also well known as a symbol of sleep. The last line in his poem "We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields". Opium, from which morphine can be made, is derived from some species of poppies. Morphine is a very strong painkiller and was given to wounded soldiers to help them sleep. A much larger dose was given to those who could not survive, helping to end their misery. As well as performing his duties as surgeon, Lieutenant Colonel McCrae also served on the guns when needed and occasionally performed burial services. It was after performing the service for a very dear friend, Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, that McCrae was inspired to write

McCrae, a respected physician and noted professor of medicine at McGill University, is best remembered as the author of In Flanders Fields . This famous poem of World War I, was written while he was a member of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. McCrae House was a project of the Col. John McCrae Birthplace Society, an organization dedicated to creating a museum of the birthplace of John McCrae. The Society's dream was realized in 1968 with the official opening of the museum. In 1983 this museum was amalgamated with the Guelph Civic Museum to form Guelph Museums. Over the years, objects, photographs and documents were collected that relate to the life of John McCrae and his ancestors. The museum consequently has a collection of mid to late 19th century and early 20th century materials: letters, diaries, journals, sketch books, documents, photographs, uniforms, furniture, medical equipment, etc. Two rooms (a kitchen and a bedroom) portray middle class life in 1870s Guelph. The rest of the museum consists of an "L" shaped gallery that depicts the life of John McCrae and his family. A late 19th century board and batten coach house is located behind the main building.

Significance of the Poppy
The story of how the Poppy became an international symbol of remembrance is a remarkable one.
In Flanders Fields
Lt-Col John McCrae This connection between the red poppy and war dead was renewed over a century later on the Western Front during the First World War. It was verses by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae (1872-1918), a Canadian Medical Officer, which began the intriguing process by which the Flanders Poppy became immortalised worldwide as the symbol of remembrance: The inspiration for the verses had been the death of a fellow officer, Lt Alexis Helmer, of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery on 2 May 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres (Ieper) in western Belgium, for whom McCrae had performed the burial service. McCrae's verses, which he had scribbled in pencil on a page torn from his despatch book, were sent anonymously by a fellow officer to the English magazine, Punch , which published them under the title 'In Flanders Fields' on 8 December 1915.

McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem: Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime. As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men—Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans—in the Ypres salient.
