It was an "ill-kept and dirty rickety concern," according to presidential secretary John G. Nicolay. "I wonder how much longer a great nation, as ours is, will compel its ruler to live in such a small and dilapidated old shanty, and in such a shabby-genteel style." A Nicolay associate in the President's office, was less critical, describing the White House as "a very respectable building of brick and stone, painted white, built in the form of a parallelogram, two stories high fronting north; but, owing to the declivity, three stories fronting south toward the Potomac."
President Abraham Lincoln himself once called it "this damned house," and when he was besieged by office seekers and afflicted by bad news from the war front, the White House must have seemed truly damned. But, despite its drawbacks, the White House was a clear improvement on the family's previous living accommodations. Indeed, the President also declared it was "better than any house they have ever lived in." For the four years and one month of Mr. Lincoln's presidency from March 1861 to April 1865, it was home to the Lincoln family and the center of efforts to restore the Union and abolish slavery.

Emigrants to Oregon in 1844
compiled by Stephenie Flora
Following is a list for the emigration of 1844. Additional arrivals and information will be added as I get my notes compiled. All additions and corrections would be appreciated. NOTE: all female members of the emigration are listed by MAIDEN name [if known] even if they were married at the time of the emigration. If you are a descendant of one of these families and would like to be contacted by other descendants I would be happy to include your information. Please contact me via email at my address at the bottom of this page. Captains of 1844 *1: At Council Bluffs, the Stephens-Murphy party started the last week of May and headed westward along the north side of the Platte River to Fort Laramie. This party consisted of about 40 men and 27 wagons. The group was captained by Elisha Stephens and guided, at times, by Caleb Greenwood and his sons. This group were less effected by the bad spring weather than those who traveled the "Kansas" routes. They later were to split at Fort Hall, with a group of about 26 men, 8 women and 17 children heading for California. Although little can be found on one Isaac Hitchcock, he is mentioned in several sources as assisting the party in getting to their destination. *2: The remaining group, captained by John Thorpe (or Tharp), followed the same route traveled by the American Board missionaries of 1836, and reached the Willamette well ahead of the companies from Independence and St. Joseph. *9

compiled by Stephenie Flora

Captains of 1845 St. Joseph Companies:
In early May 1845, the Oregon bound emigrant companies starting from the the St. Joseph, Mo area totaled, according to the St. Joseph paper, 223 wagons, 954 persons, with 545 firearms, 9,425 cattle, and 108 horses and mules. John Clark was hired as pilot for the journey to the junction with the Independence-to-Oregon trail. The elected captains for the companies from the St. Joseph rendezvous were: [1]: Captain William G. T'Vault with [according to Bancroft 61 wagons and 300 persons]. John Waymire was lieutenant and James Allen was sergeant. [2]: Captain Solomon Tetherow with 66 wagons and 293 persons. Hardin D. Martin was lieutenant. They organized under the name "Savannah Oregon Emigrating Society" with Rev. William Helm, chairman and Rev. Lewis Thompson, secretary. Records kept by the company indicate that there were 100 armed men, 293 persons [63 females over 14, 56 under 14, 68 males under 16], 66 wagons, 170 guns and pistols, 1,022 cattle (398 oxen, 624 loose cattle); 74 mules and horses. [3]: Captain Abner Hackleman [note: sometimes confused with son Abram/Abraham Hackleman who came in 1847 *6] with approximately 52 wagons, 214 persons and 666 head of cattle and a few horses. This company organized under the name "New London Emigrating Company".
